If you work in Starbucks - dogs?

averychoc · 02/01/2026 12:48

I love that Starbucks are so dog friendly, but is there not a rule that says staff should wash their hands after touching dogs? I feel like it should be common sense to do this before returning to a food/drink prep area but clearly not. Isn’t it part of the basic training? I find it so off putting that people are touching dogs and handing my coffee cup.

They should wash their hands, but you don’t know if they wash their hands after picking their nose, using the loo, touching their hair or any other part of their body or surfaces either.

TullyFromEastTilbury · 02/01/2026 18:48

Absolutely rank. Your hygiene standards are absolutely appalling. Your dog has been licking its butt and then licking your hands and you’re making sandwiches and handling other food with them. Probably pick your nose and scratch your butt before handling food as well, I’ll bet. Bravo.

No you are right, but that’s rather the point here. If they are so bad they don’t follow the food hygiene rules re dogs I suspect they also don’t follow them re the things you mentioned.

Did you speak to anyone at the Starbucks you were in? They’d probably have been best placed to answer your question.

I don’t want to ask the person who is doing it, it’s absolutely fine for me to make a thread about it instead. Do you work there, or have any other input?

I genuinely don't know why it might be considered gross. I've worked with animals and had pets all my life, I don't wash my hands after I touch them every single time. It doesn't feel gross to me. Shaking hands with someone is another matter - lord knows what they just did with that hand!

Also, the Starbucks staff touch other stuff, their hair, money, their own body and clothes, used cutlery and crockery they're collecting, used napkins, packaging Is a dog more gross than that?

I’m not suggesting a dog is more gross than any of the other things they do without handwashing. I’m suggesting if they don’t wash their hands when they are supposed to, it’s not ok. I don’t like it when I go to Tesco and see the shopping pickers licking their fingers to open the read meat bags either, however today I decided to ask about Starbucks.

You can touch your dogs and not wash your hands all you like but if you are making me a coffee I expect food hygiene rules to be followed.

I have a dog so obviously love them but I think it’s horrible.

fuulia · 02/01/2026 18:58

I would mention it to a member of staff / management discreetly. It’s not a good look to have staff doing this. There are a lot of people who tolerate dogs but would find this repellent, and say nothing and then not come back. You’d be doing them a favour. Hospitality needs to keep customers at the moment

Yes, but sit outside? Why should animals be inflicted on everyone else? Many people don’t like dogs or other animals.

Would you be ok with my dd bringing her pet rat into a cafe?

Don’t even get me started on people who let them sit on the chairs/put their paws on the table. Selfish arseholes.

I would actually prefer the pet rat over a dog (not a fan of dogs). Is it a cutie? My cousin used to have them.

I’m not a fan tbh but dd loves it - she also has a snake 😂 and she has asked before now why she can’t take them into cafes if dogs are allowed. And she has a good point.

justasking111 · 02/01/2026 19:05

Well I'm not sitting outside in bad weather.

My neighbours would walk their dog on the beach every morning, then go for coffee and a bite to eat at Starbucks. Her husband died at home very suddenly at home a few months back.

Well the staff at Starbucks have been wonderful so she now walks alone and gets a fine welcome at Starbucks every day with her dog.

There are single people and it's an important point of contact some days when you go home to an empty house.

I think @Onleemoi was asking a perfectly reasonable question, to which you, and everyone else on this thread knows the answer. We have very strict hygiene laws in this country and if food is being handled hands should have been washed, regardless of what was being touched before.

But hey, well done, @averychoc , for being the first this year to start a breast beating ‘why oh why are dogs allowed in cafes’ thread (which is what this is, of course). I’m sure the next one will be along shortly!

Did you read my OP? The very first sentence?

I love that Starbucks are so dog friendly

I am not starting a ‘why oh why are dogs allowed in cafes’ thread at all. Some people have replied and said they don’t think dogs should be allowed, that’s fine, they are entitled to that thought but please don’t twist what i said to mean the same. Do me the very basic respect of at lease reading the first line of the OP.

I did, and I think you are being disingenuous, as the answer to your question is beyond obvious.

I don't know how dog owners cope. They must be ill all the time!

Well some dog owners I know don’t worm or de-flea their pet, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the owners have worms (dog hoovers up cat shit/ fox shit/ badger shit/ any old shit) then licks owners face…or dog sits it egg wormy bum on chair / sofa / bed, owner puts hand on same area the makes a sandwhich….
I love dogs as a general rule, but most are pretty rank with what they eat/ roll in, and often aforementioned canine is allowed to lick plates / cutlery or sit on soft furnishings. Unless it’s a ‘walkers’ pub or cafe, I don’t think dogs should be allowed in cafes. And any dog yapping should absolutely be banned. Last few cafes I’ve been into there having been yapping dogs, just no! So glad dogs aren’t permitted in cinemas!

I’m single, so I can’t leave them outside alone so am I just not allowed a drink or snack then?
It’s badly trained staff that are the issue here, not the dogs per se. Mine doesn’t sit on the furniture or interact with anyone who doesn’t approach her first- including children who run up to her unsupervised and pet her without asking if I don’t get in their quickly enough 🙄. Really not sure how that affects anyone else.

Or maybe even worse, the one we went in yesterday where a largish dog jumped up at a member of staff carrying a tray laden with glasses etc causing her to drop them all. I felt so sorry for her and livid at the stupid dog owner.

Unfortunately it’s now becoming impossible to find places that DON’T allow dogs. Our favourite place still doesn’t luckily (possibly bc they’re Muslim!)

I see the petting/not washing hands thing so often and it’s 🤮

We do not allow dogs inside for this reason, unfortunately so many people are incapable of being sensible!

Absolutely, staff should be washing their hands, not just after dogs but after touching money, their own face, a phone, the till, etc, but I bet that doesn't happen either. Sometimes it's best just to not know exactly what goes on, I drill into my staff to use tongs, we have a hand-wash behind the counter, keep the same person on the till etc but I bet my staff have scratched an itch subconsciously and not washed hands

Your dog smells, especially when it’s been raining or it’s been rolling around outdoors in shit. I go into a coffee shop I want to smell fresh coffee and food, not stinky dog.

I used to go to a cafe in central Bristol where a man often came in with his pet rat.

The thing about taking your dog into a cafe or pub is that you can only do it if the owner welcomes pets. You're just abiding by the rules of the place, not 'inflicting' your animal on anyone.

It's pretty grim sitting outside in January.

I do agree with you about dogs on chairs and badly behaved dogs.

This is why I don’t go to cafes that allow dogs in ( fewer all the time )
Staff are paid to serve customers and should not touch dogs ( in my opinion )

That’s great…then you leave the dog friendly venues to those with dogs….everyone’s a winner😊

So go In dog free venues and shut up moaning 🤷‍♀️

She doesn’t actually, as she is non shedding, and do you think people who have BO, or have been sweating as they’ve been for a run, or whose baby had done a poo in their nappy shouldn’t be lowed in? Unless the answer is yes then you are a massive hypocrite. How about you mind your own bus8ness bout things that don’t do you any actual harm.

But actually none of that is the real point, which is that I- an adult human, have just as much right to exist in these circumstances as you- a presumably adult human- do, and I’m just as important, so your desire not to have my dog near you does not trump mine to get a coffee.
