I'm thinking of getting my first bag.

Would welcome thoughts

Be prepared for lots of the same thing, eg bread rolls or ready-made soup. Probably depends where you're getting it from

Moltenpink · 01/01/2026 15:32

Check the ratings and don’t bother if under 4.

Our local independent bakery does a 3pm pick up if it has surplus stock. I’ve used it a few times if we have relatives coming to stay but make sure I pick it up before going to the supermarket as then I can buy around it depending on whether it is balanced between cake & bread or heavy on one or the other.
I got one from Costa recently and it was just tuna paninis. A complete waste of money!

Local independent bakery : wonderful pastries etc
Chain bakery : hit and miss

Most I've had from cafes have been disappointing. Just things I wouldn't usually eat. Lots of stale breakfast sandwiches.

There's a few places who just put the same food on every day, which seems suspicious.

One place was lovely and just me pick my own four items. All really delicious, fancy deli sandwiches and pizza slices. But then they never ever did it again!

One of our local Indian restaurants does one for £5 and it's great - it's always a bit of curry, rice, naan and a side... enough for a meal for one person (or two if you really stretch it).

DeanStockwell · 01/01/2026 15:47

Like pp said it really can be hit and miss , a few weeks ago I got one from five guys 3 bugers and 1 fries but everything was Stone cold , I had to disassemble everything to heat the burgers up.

shellyleppard · 01/01/2026 15:48

I've had good ones and bad ones...as previous posters say it depends on what shop it's from.

Thingsthatgo · 01/01/2026 16:03

I find that the ones from fancy cafes don’t always offer good value for money. For example, a flapjack or a large cookie to eat in at the cafe might be £4 or so, three of them would be £12. The TGTG bag might be £4-6, and only contain three cookies.
I once spent £4 on two small millionaires shortbreads, that were made with horrible cheap chocolate and I had to get there at an annoyingly specific time.
I do like the bakery ones, and there’s a local
pie shop that is very generous with their portions.

littlezozo · 01/01/2026 19:00

I had a co op one once. Meant to have the original value of 15 quid. Rubbish and i checked the prices on line and 8 quid at the most. But I will try again. Maybe just not my local co op

Christmaseree · 01/01/2026 19:06

I did one at a local shop once, the staff didn’t know anything about it so they let me choose anything I wanted up to £12 in value so that was good.

RamALamADingDong2 · 01/01/2026 20:07

Mixed results. We have an organic fruit and veg shop around the corner - great value for a massive bag of random bits. Great for soups and smoothies. The posh cafe near us also does one - I once only got a small stale loaf from them. Not so great.

NarwhalBuddy · 01/01/2026 21:35

I found it more miss than hit but its ok.

notnorman · 01/01/2026 21:36

I read that as ‘any thoughts on a good go to bag’ and I was going to suggest a mulberry Alexa 🫣

ChristmasMantleStatue · 01/01/2026 21:39

I do it for our local bakery. It's marvellous. They sell sour dough bread for £8 a loaf, but if i time things right for a fiver I can get 2 of those, and some really lovely homemade sandwiches.

It's so good I usually sling them another £5 into their tip jar.

I don't do the Costa or supermarket ones right now.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 01/01/2026 21:53

I think it depends on your general outlook and your practical situation whether it is worth it.
For example, I work shifts, eat at odd times, when tired don’t like choosing food. I have a dd who like me eats most stuff. No allergies. So they really suit me plus it’s a bargain.
My best good to go bags are from Pret or M&S
Pret is especially good as their policy is to make and sell items on the same day. Obviously a chilled granola pot or fresh juice is fine for a day or two after.
I’ve had delicious Pret lunch or dinner bags - typically a hot soup, baguette and butter, toastie or similar AND usually a breakfast pot that I have the next day.Around a £5 and there are very few items I don’t like in Pret. M&S very varied - often a ready meal that is freezable and they are generous if they have lots of sandwiches.

I view it as ‘safe gambling’ it’s very rare the bag is a waste of money although as per pp, be careful with bakery or Costa type places.

Dartmoorcheffy · 01/01/2026 21:57

Ive had them loads of times from my morrisons local. Brilliant value for money

Especially if you go late at night

Last time I got all this for 3.50

Two ready meals (lasagne and a carbonara)
Pack of 4 chicken breast
Coleslaw
Potato salad
Bread x 2 leaves
Potatoes
Pack prawns
Mixed salad bowl

Iwiicit · 01/01/2026 22:01

I got one from Morrison's a few years ago. It contained about 5kg of parsnips. I took it as a challenge. We had turkey and parsnip curry ( which was excellent), roast parsnips, parsnip soup, pork casserole with cider and parsnips and even parsnip cake. It was about this time of year, so I was off work and had the time to cook everything!

Noseylittlemoo · 01/01/2026 22:04

I've had one from M and S and I got about £40 of food for £5 but it included 7 packs of sandwiches which I ended up wasting (it was before they told you what was likely to be inside). I had one from the bakery Paul recently it was very good value I got a variety of 8 items for £7. I put 2 of the pretzels in the freezer and ate all the other things over a few days . I ordered it on a rainy day when I thought less ppl would go out so they would potentially have more leftovers!

TheMateofOphelia · 01/01/2026 22:43

Tgtg sushi bag from yo sushi is a regular work lunch for me.

TwillTrousers · 01/01/2026 22:54

Very hit and miss and depends where you live. There’s a good Greggs one near me but it’s all like cakes and pasties (obviously). Morrisons have twice given me rotten food, I had one great bag. Morrisons cafe give loads of cake. Costa was just loads of vegan sandwiches.

Berlinlover · 03/01/2026 21:26

I got a good one at my local M&S tonight for €4.99 (I’m in Ireland)

Sweet and sour chicken ready meal
Macaroni and cheese ready meal
Medium wholemeal loaf
A BLT sandwich
A small box of red pepper and feta bites
Chunky chips
A box of six mince pies
A chocolate Santa

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/01/2026 23:04

I got one from Hummingbird Bakery this afternoon (cost £4.99) and got 2 HUGE slices of cake (usually £8 per slice), 1 cupcake (usually £5 each) and a big cookie (no idea how much they cost.

Sallakadoula · 04/01/2026 23:07

Ive had lots from different places. Always check the ratings for each individual place. They vary a lot in my town but I didn't the ratings from others are accurate.

Best place in my town is a bakery chain.

BrendaSmall · 04/01/2026 23:09

It’s stuff that they haven’t been able to sell so it’s been sitting around all day
