How do you react if you see a celebrity?

I walked past a very prominent and famous TV presenter in my local high street today. I smiled and said Happy New Year, he smiled and said it back, and carried on walking.

i kind of wish I had said something more but I wouldn’t have the nerve to ask for a selfie or anything like that.

have you ever encountered a famous person in the street and what did you do or say?

I probably wouldn’t even notice them tbh!

Arlanymor · 31/12/2025 18:51

Honestly I just smile and give a greeting like you did - I can't imagine how annoying it must be to be famous and have people asking you for selfies all the time or trying to strike up a conversation when you are in your leisure time. Different if it's a meet and greet (not that I have been to one, the idea doesn't appeal), but not when they are just being people in the world. I think it's much better to give them the courtesy of their own time and space.

ComewithmeIntotheseaofLove · 31/12/2025 18:51

I was on a tube carriage with Mackenzie crook - just us - he had a baseball cap on pulled low and was clearly trying to disguise himself so I said nothing - although I was tempted to say to him his eyes gave it away

when seen others treat same as anyone - I always assume they don’t want to be bothered

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 31/12/2025 18:56

It has only happened a few times but I ignore them. They aren’t at work.

tinyspiny · 31/12/2025 18:57

I would do as you did , just say hello and walk on .

Mumteedum · 31/12/2025 18:58

I said hello to someone once because I recognised him and only realised after I didn't know him and he was famous 😁

Can't even remember who it was. I think it was a comedian who was well known then but not now.

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 31/12/2025 18:59

I’ve had many encounters - stood shoulder to… well, rib, as he’s tall… with Stephen Fry; sat next to Dom Joly at the theatre (no idea, DH told me); sat 2 rows behind Alan Rickman; Paloma Faith etc. They’re just normal people living their lives tbh pretty awkward to start gushing!

TheatricalLife · 31/12/2025 19:01

I see them all the time as I live in an area very fashionable with celebrities currently (to buy houses and visit). I just say morning if passing on a walk like with anyone else in the village -most say hi back. I think lots like it here as they get basically ignored or treated like any other person.

Bohemond23 · 31/12/2025 19:02

In front of Celia Imrie at the NT. She was clearly there for the play and dressed as a little old lady. Ignored.

HeartyBlueRobin · 31/12/2025 19:02

I saw Michael Parkinson once and smiled at him as I thought I knew him from somewhere. He smiled and said hello. It was only a few minutes later I realised who he was.

Whilst in Portugal an actress from Brookside asked for directions. I thought I knew her from somewhere too and said "you look very familiar but I don't know why". She didn't say who she was and again it was only as she was walking away it twigged.

Clearly I'm useless at recognising famous people until they've passed!

GreenSmithing · 31/12/2025 19:03

I probably smile at them, thinking I know them but I'm not sure from where, perhaps someone I used to work with? And then about two weeks later I will realise who it was

27TimesAway · 31/12/2025 19:03

I wouldn't say anything. They are just people doing their jobs like all of us and going about their lives like all of us.

I was at a function once and without our knowledge until we arrived a celeb chef was filming there that day. One of the people I was with as soon a she saw him started shrieking 'There the great man is!!' and pointed at him while he was walking through the dining room.

It was really cringe.

CeeJay26 · 31/12/2025 19:04

I used to live in Notting Hill and we regularly bumped into celebs walking around, or in the local M&S. Never said anything, it’s not really done in London. We generally just let them get on with their lives. I can imagine it being more exciting outside of London though 😄

Is there a reason you can't identify the very prominent and famous TV presenter?

corlan · 31/12/2025 19:09

I always feel a bit fearful and look away so that they don't know I've clocked them. I've only realised lately that this is due to an incident when I was a teenager when my brother smacked me round the head for shouting hello at Dennis Waterman!

Fingalscave · 31/12/2025 19:09

I saw a Coronation St. actor when queuing in a cafe near work in Manchester. He was behind me and I was thinking I knew him from work and said Hello. He just smiled and said Hello love. It probably happened to him all the time! Wish I could remember his name.

I met the Duchess of Gloucester through work and she was so very nice, but I was tongue tied. I'm usually good at smalltalk but not that time!

Pieceofpurplesky · 31/12/2025 19:09

Like a PP I usually say hello as I think I know them.
I did once travel from London to Manchester on a train with a very famous soap star who was lovely and shared her wine! I was opposite her.

Pedallleur · 31/12/2025 19:12

I would get on with my life. I don't need to say anything and they aren't going to know me.

It was Epping so just inside London. It was the first time I’ve encountered a celebrity of their status, so I was a little giddy

I wouldn’t say anything. It’s a big deal for you, but imagine if every other person you walked past said hello to you (depending on level of fame!) I would soon lose my pleasant smile and start scowling at people.

scalt · 31/12/2025 19:15

On Oxford Street, I once heard someone cry out “oh look, Trinny and Susannah!” They were being filmed taking a woman into a clothes shop, one of them holding each of her arms, like a reluctant child.

No, I was hoping people might guess but I didn’t say it in the post.

PolyVagalNerve · 31/12/2025 19:16

I always do a double take as my initial reaction is that I know them ! Then I realise I don’t, I just recognise them, and I go about my business
I cringe at the people who ask them for selfies / autographs - I don’t get why people do that ?

paddleboardingmum · 31/12/2025 19:17

Graham Norton?

How on earth could we guess without any clues??
