How do you react if you see a celebrity?

I walked past a very prominent and famous TV presenter in my local high street today. I smiled and said Happy New Year, he smiled and said it back, and carried on walking.

i kind of wish I had said something more but I wouldn’t have the nerve to ask for a selfie or anything like that.

have you ever encountered a famous person in the street and what did you do or say?

We also saw Rory McGrath from the car in some tiny shorts and my DS said "Look at that man's big legs!" 😆

I said hello to Bob Hoskins when I lived in north London. He was washing his car outside his house he was very friendly.

Ah lovely man

can you imagine any modern day celebs cleaning their own cars..I can’t

Vodkamartini3olives · 31/12/2025 20:04

I saw Chris Pratt & Arnold Schwarzenegger at a coffee shop. I nodded and smiled said hey' how's it going '. I thought I recognized them from somewhere like one of the kids sports club or school. Only after Ieft I realised. They were both very friendly

I've just realised I am a slight hypocrite. 9/10 times I would just say hello and move on, but once I didn't. I took my ex-husband out for his 30th to a restaurant in Arundel and Simon Callow came in with his partner and sat at the next table. So I popped to the bar and asked if I could pay for their first round of drinks and just put a note with it to say "Cheers! You were brilliant as Count Fosco" but not to say that it was from me.

Well the drinks arrived he must have asked the waiter who it was from and he declined to say, so Mr Callow stood up and said in his big booming voice: "Darling whoever you are - I want to say thank you!" So I sheepishly put my hand up. God he was lovely and we had an initial little chat.

It was one of those three course special menus and our puddings arrived at the same time as his and his partners... so he insisted on pushing our tables together to have a chat over dessert and wine. This was at least 20 years ago now, I still think about it from time to time, it was one of the loveliest nights.

I LOVE him

My kid is friends with the daughter of someone famous. They met through work and he had no idea she had a famous mum for weeks. He’s not met the mum but is still mates with the daughter who is apparently very normal but thinks her mother is a nightmare.

For some reason I immediately thought of Billie Piper

Quite a lot older- kids are early 20s. It just amused me that they were friends for ages before the subject of parents came up.

I’ve seen some of the most famous people in the world (Paul McCartney, Euan McGregor, Madonna, Kate Winslet, Gallagher #2, Fizz from Corrie) walking through the streets of London.
Like most Londoners I generally fall to my knees or intentionally prostrate myself across their path while ululating and then thank the divine beings above for gracing us with their presence then I kiss all their feets.

Maybe Madonna and Paul McCartney prostrate themselves before Fizz from Corrie?

Ragand bone man has a lovely smile

Gliblet · 31/12/2025 20:32

I meet quite a lot of celebs through work which makes it much easier because they're 'on' if that makes sense, and they're expecting to be spoken to/schmoozed. Those I've bumped into 'in the wild' I've either just smiled and nodded at and left alone, or I've told them I love a particular film or show/character, but I've never asked for an autograph, selfie or anything like that in the street.

Mind you, that would probably be better than someone I used to work with - she once came back to the office bright red and laughing so hard she was completely out of breath. When she'd recovered a bit she explained that she'd been on her way back from doing some lunchtime shopping and saw Alan Rickman on his way in to a building just down the road. Something in her brain obviously decided 'I know him, better smile and wave' so she did - just as he started to wave back she realised who she was waving at, cringed massively, shoved her hands in her pockets and scuttled off down the nearest alleyway. The last thing she saw of poor Mr Rickman was him looking utterly bewildered by this apparent nutcase who was delighted to see him but horrified that he was being polite back 🤣

Crumpetdisappointment · 31/12/2025 20:32

Roger Daltrey also a really lovely man

Usually walk past if in the street/at an event, or ignore if on a train. Did not even greet Dafydd Iwan when seeing him at the Eisteddfod in the summer.

He signed a book for me in Waterstones for my Tad this year, loveliest man. Gave me a massive cwtsch too. Roll on May 2026!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 31/12/2025 20:39

As a new graduate I worked in local TV news and would often see famous people in the studio in for filming. I always would think they were someone I knew because they worked there if I passed them, say hello, then afterwards be like, oh, that was X. There was a big Friday night drink culture and it was always funny seeing people come up to our newsreaders and chat thinking they knew them from somewhere - then they’d realise they were beamed into their homes at 6.30 sharp each night.

user593 · 31/12/2025 20:39

I used to live in an area with a lot of celebrities. I would always notice them and acknowledge them in my mind but never more than that. I made some small talk with a famous lead singer once though when we were in the small smoking area of a pub (on NYE, funnily enough!).

I love how you’ve got Madonna and Kate Winslet in the same sentence as Fizz from Corrie 😂

Tbh I actually love Fizz from Corrie and I’d be more impressed seeing her than the majority of celebs mentioned on the thread.

Fiz is a legend, and so much prettier in real life than on screen

I only recognise people after I have walked right past them, sometimes not even then.

fouroclockrock · 31/12/2025 20:48

The same way I do when I see any other person really.

TroysMammy · 31/12/2025 20:51

I just smiled and said hello to Rhys Ifans. He did have a pleading look for me to rescue him from a fan he couldn't get rid of but I just walked on. Well I was on my lunch break.

Hammy19 · 31/12/2025 20:55

Just treat them as I would anyone else

MrsJamin · 31/12/2025 20:56

We were in the huge toy shop in New York at the end of November around 12 years ago and Peter Kay was there with his wife. We were there for ages and no one bothered him - he looked like he was having a lovely time buying his family Christmas presents. I was a big fan but thought the kindest way to show my admiration for him was to leave him alone too - as I thought it must have been so lovely for him to be free to walk around a busy store without being bothered. I once had a friend who had a brief spell with fame in the noughties and people are SO weird, you don't want to be anything like that!

Digglesthedog · 31/12/2025 20:56

Harry Redknapp was a row in front but diagonally on the same plane as me. I only knew him from I’m a celeb but I was minorly amused by all the middle aged women fawning over him.

was walking my old dog and walked past Chris packham (next to the set of winter watch), no idea who he was, and he tried to get my dogs attention so he could pet him but my dog totally blanked him.

my dad sat on a plane next to Michaela strachan as she was on her way to the above winter watch. He had no clue who she was. I would have loved that though, absolutely adored her shows as a kid.

i don’t think I’d recognise most celebrities tbh and I am really not one for approaching people.

PersephoneParlormaid · 31/12/2025 21:02

I ignore them, but would say hello if I would say it to anyone walking past. It must be annoying to be going about your business and be harassed for autographs and pictures.
