Hop to it - Easter eggs in the shops!

Called into our local Iceland this dark and frosty December morning only to be faced with Easter eggs and chocolate bunnies!

Don't know why I was so surprised really but flipping heck, we're still eating mince pies.

Hop to it - Easter eggs in the shops!

I'm not too bothered this year by the premature appearance because:

  1. Orero apparently have a creme egg edition coming out.
  2. I get married in April'and we are having Easter eggs for favours (easy)

Exactly, poor sod has barely been born and we’re already nailing him to the cross !! Don’t think the 3 Wise Men have even visited him yet !!

😂😂😂

And to add, have you seen the cost each year?
You have to start getting bit by bit like Xmas. I saw basic eggs what used to be £1 now for £2.50-£4.00, lindt alone is touching £15ish!

We have started putting them out because they go on the seasonal chocolate aisle and no one is buying selection boxes etc now, plus we are low on that stock. Either we start putting out Easter eggs or we have empty shelves.

Well I was disappointed not to be able to find mince pies in two different supermarkets today. If shops can't be arsed properly stocking Christmas items during the whole of Christmas then they can fill the space with staples for a bit rather than pretending it's already nearly Easter which is actually 3 months ago.

Again, when I am dictator then no Christmas items will be available at all until Advent and then required to be carried until the end of Christmas. Ditto for Lent and Easter.

As Bridget Jones puts it in one of books: Christmas is massively hyped before it happens, then snatched away just as you are starting to enjoy it.

Pretty sure the gift of gold wasn't in the shape of a Lindt bunny either!

We're such a sucker for it all, every single event is ruined by commercialism because as soon as the event arrives, it's snatched away and we're told to concentrate on the next one.

No wonder we're all stressed, over stimulated and depressed!!!

I think you're right. I was talking with a much younger colleague just before Christmas and we were saying how unbelievably quickly the year felt to have gone. I had thought 'time flying' was just something you felt getting older so it was interesting hearing his agreement. I appreciate we have to do a certain amount of advance planning in life, but do also think things like having Easter promoted in December is to blame for losing 'the moment' and time speeding up.

Please tell me you are joking. I have not been in a supermarket since Christmas eve. Please tell me my first venture out I am not going to be confronted with Easter Eggs.

miamo12 · 01/01/2026 16:59

in many shops they have a seasonal aisle so they need to replace the now empty Christmas section with something. Nothing was in Lidl yesterday but they were missing several of the “middle of” shelving racks on coasters so obviously stock hasn’t arrived. Christmas stock was sold out in mid December (manager was fuming with his area logistics because they simply weren’t sending stock, meaning it looks like they are down year on year!)

Lavenderandbrown · 01/01/2026 17:12

And to think it used to seem ridiculous to see valentines candy before the new year. Easter is a whole other level of marketing a holiday way too prematurely. Surely no one cares about Easter right now
always seems to be some news article about how holiday sales were “down” and I have been saying the same thing….yes because shoppers are literally bored of all the merchandise before they even think about buying it

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 01/01/2026 18:07

Sorry, it's true @purplecorkheart. Brace yourself!

Jesus christ

What's he got to do with it.😉

Alderraymyheartisindanger · 01/01/2026 18:20

It's just another product to push
All the Valentine guff will be out 1st week of Jan.

RessicaJabbit · 01/01/2026 18:22

We saw them before Christmas.

OccasionalHope · 01/01/2026 18:22

We still have at least three packs of mince pies to eat up and all the brandy cream and brandy butter is out of stock.

scalt · 31/12/2025 17:07

And some of those Easter bunnies are probably re-wrapped reindeer.

Since when has MN cared so much about religion? It’s usually dismissed as “fairy tales”, God is an “imaginary friend” etc.

@EtonMessy That made me laugh, Jesus has only just been born and now we’re nailing him up.

Re wrapped reindeer 🤣🤣🤣

Yes. Specifically, the Lindt ones. Have you not noticed how similar the bunnies and the deer are? Same shape, different paper.

Thisisnotmyid · 01/01/2026 19:08

It’s a bit mental isn’t it. I saw them in my Iceland on Xmas Eve 🙈 although in surprise they haven’t just started selling everything all year round to be honest at this rate

scalt · 01/01/2026 19:19

One thing that annoys me more than the stuff in the shops early is this peculiar use of the word "holiday", as in "marketing a holiday". To the Americans, it means a festive day such as Christmas, Easter or Thanksgiving. To us Brits, it means time off work or school, or going away, which the Americans call "vacation".

Each to their own and all that, our vocabularies are slightly different, nothing wrong with that. But this use of the word is creeping over to our side of the Atlantic more and more. I keep hearing in Britain "Have a happy holiday!", and the context makes it clear it's about one single day, and not, for example the summer holidays, or "hols" as Enid Blyton would put it. We'll be saying things like "Candlemas Holiday", "Valentine's Holiday", "Ash Wednesday Holiday", "Good Friday Holiday", "Harvest Festival Holiday", "Coronation Holiday" if we're not careful. (I also think we have too many bank holidays, and I always lose earnings on those days, but that's another rant.)

And breathe...
