Planning ahead for the coming summer, we'll have overseas visitors who would love to explore our green and pleasant land!
So please can you tell me what you consider to be your must visit sites?

Arundel Castle/village
Petworth House/Village
Winchester will keep you busy for a day
New Forest/Beaulieu/Lyndhurst/Lymington

Can add in:

Uppark
Weald and Downland Museum
Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth (the Mary Rose museum and the Gosport submarine museum are both excellent)
Old Portsmouth and Southsea (you could take the hovercraft over to IoW for a day trip)
Fort Nelson (Royal Armouries)
Fishbourne Roman Palace
Bignor Roman Villa
Cissbury Ring
Chichester cathedral
Pallant House gallery
Bosham
East Head at the Witterings
Cowdray Ruins
Parham House

You can do Avebury, Lacock , Silbury Hill and the West Kennet long barrow in one trip - that would be cool

outdooryone · 30/12/2025 17:10

Many of the Orkney, Shetland and Hebridean ancient sites. Just staggering to walk around and consider the timeline of human activity on these sites.

Hadrian's Wall. So many different sites. Utterly wild and beautiful.

UnderThePressure · 30/12/2025 17:22

York, Bath, Hampton Court Palace & The Tower of London are my favourites.

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/12/2025 17:28

North West - walk the walls in Chester and visit all the Roman sites. A day trip to Conwy and the castle. Finish off in Liverpool.

ThejoyofNC · 30/12/2025 17:36

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Stratford upon Avon. I've had many a lovely day out there in the summer.

TrickyD · 30/12/2025 17:36

I can’t believe no one has suggested Ludlow, unless I have missed it.
A ravishingly beautiful town crammed with picturesque old buildings and St Lawrence’ church with its famous ‘Ludlow Blue’ stained glass and its misericords.
A wonderful castle and stunning riverside walks.
Side trips to the Ironbridge Gorge, Stokesay Castle and Church Stretton for the Cardingmill Valley.

Avebury is lovely. The stones are huge and you can just walk around all of them. I'd try to get a visit to some of the amazing beaches around Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire.

mayflowers9 · 30/12/2025 17:39

Hampton Court Palace is amazing. I’ve been three times and find there is so much to see that you can’t fully appreciate it all in a day.

Ely Cathedral
Cambridge
Oxford (Magdalene College, Christ Church)
Audley End
Leeds Castle
Warwick Castle
Dennis Severs’s House
Tower of London
Hever Castle
Eltham Palace

Guided history tours are a great way to explore cities too.

SleafordSods · 30/12/2025 17:48

If you want to do a few nights away hiw about Chester, Conwy Castle, Jodrell Bank.

BeKhakiReader · 30/12/2025 17:49

Windsor Castle is an interesting day out.

Talkinpeace · 30/12/2025 17:51

Uppark is a strange one to me as its a new build, not actually historic

Westminster Abbey every time. I go regularly and still fascinating. Anyone I have brought is always impressed . Bonus of Big Ben nearby and that section of London has so much to offer .

Portsmouth historic dockyards

Asking for myself here but easiest and cheapest way to get the Shetland islands from London? And is accommodation wispy available and I’m thinking summer is best time to go the weather up there?

You can fly via Edinburgh or Aberdeen, or you could fly to Aberdeen and take an overnight ferry.

Usual types of accommodation - hotels, B&B, AirBnB.

Watch SteveMarsh on YouTube. He is always going there.

Timelineuk · 30/12/2025 18:05

West Wycombe Caves, the village for a nice old English feel, West wycombe park if it’s open , and some lovely cafes nearby, great views from the golden ball. Bonus if they like stranger things, all the London sights definitely, Cliveden in Taplow (spectacular) Avebury, Stonehenge, Oxford,Cotswold, and up north Lake District every time.

Roomforapony · 30/12/2025 18:06

I recommend Wells in Somerset, the Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace are beautiful, the medieval cathedral dates from the 13th century. There’s also the medieval Vicar’s Close which is the oldest inhabited street in Europe plus the swans who live in the Palace moat ring the bell daily to be fed🔔🦢
I also agree that Blenheim Palace is a wonderful place to visit.

dizzydizzydizzy · 30/12/2025 18:18

Hampton Court Palace - loved going there even as a child.

The Roman Baths in Bath. Absolutely fascinating- again I also loved going there as a child.

Northumbria, especially Bamburgh castle and Holy Island

And Warkworth Castle! That's great fun to get lost in. It's one of the most intact derelict castles we've visited.

Yes, Ludlow is beautiful. Agree with Ironbridge Gorge too, the museums are great.
