DD sharing lip gloss with friends

surreysarah · 30/12/2025 12:52

DD7 got some kids lip gloss for Christmas. She’s asking if her friends can try it on too. WWYD from a hygiene perspective - is it a no to share lip gloss or is it ok?

I’d just say best to squeeze a little on your finger and apply rather than use the applicator

PollyPlumPeach · 30/12/2025 12:54

It's fine

bigboykitty · 30/12/2025 12:55

I'd say no. Lipgloss is a personal item and not something to share.

not an issue. Yes they can squeeze on a finger but they’ll probably forget. They’re all dirty anyway. It’ll be covered in lint soon enough

NerrSnerr · 30/12/2025 12:57

It’s really not a massive deal is it? If one of the children has a cold or bug they’ll almost certainly spread it anyway- sharing or not.

BreakfastClubBlues · 30/12/2025 12:58

I would hate it, but would let her get on with it and not comment.

Nothing bad is going to happen.

DappledThings · 30/12/2025 12:58

I wouldn't think twice about this. Why would it matter?

bigboykitty · 30/12/2025 12:59

Erm cold sores, anyone?

If one of them has a coldsore they'll probably pass it on by sharing drinks or something else kids do. Plus I would expect the parents of that child to remind them not to share stuff when they have one anyway.

Putting in random rules about lip gloss seems like a pointless concern to me.

OneOfEachPlease · 30/12/2025 13:04

This would literally never cross my mind. I mean it’s a seven-year-old‘s lipgloss. It’s gonna get used about twice anyway.

GreywackeJ · 30/12/2025 13:07

I can’t imagine being bothered about this unless someone has a cold sore. My friends and I use each other’s lip gloss, lipstick, balm all the time.

liveforsummer · 30/12/2025 13:07

Wait til she’s a teen. They share all sorts in the school then later pub or night club toilets

Bonjamin · 30/12/2025 13:09

Meghan Markle says, sure, knock yourself out.
Kate Middleton says, not so much, thanks.

surreysarah · 30/12/2025 13:10

Thanks. Dabbing on the finger is a good idea!

If that story is actually true I always though Kate came out of it looking worse and weirdly prissy about it.

One of them may have herpes, you don’t have to have visible symptoms to be contagious.

35965a · 30/12/2025 13:15

Ew no, lip products aren’t to be shared. So many people have herpes and it’s contagious before a cold sore appears.

Why? I wouldn’t want to lend my lip gloss/lipstick to anyone else. Particularly a virtual stranger.

Basic hygiene is not a "random" rule.

I'm amazed that so many people would be so blasé about their child being given herpes for the rest of their life because of poor hygiene practices. It's completely avoidable.

What can I say? Seems prissy to me. I wouldn't be bothered. If you are you are but I still find it a bit eyerolly

No it made me love her more as that’s a normal human ‘ugh’ response and the ‘keep it’ was class. Meghan overstepped. Good for Kate to keep her dignity and standards.

Agreed.

Emmz1510 · 30/12/2025 21:01

I always tell my daughter not to share lip or eye products. Use finger if she must.
