Neighbours complaining about reindeer food

wasteful26 · 26/12/2025 23:45

Elder dc bought a bag of porridge on Xmas Eve to mix with glitter with their younger siblings and put out for the “reindeer”
As dc do on Xmas Eve they got carried away and as well as putting the food in our front garden they sprinkled it on the public road.
A neighbour who we do not know by name but to smile at had posted on the local FB page complaining about the mess which went over our heads but he then confronted dh in the street today when he was getting in his car.
Because of the old dry weather the porridge is still laying in the street.
Dh being his usual non diplomatic self wasn’t exactly friendly towards neighbour.
Ive no intentions of going out with a brush and shovel for what is a few handfuls of oats and it’s to rain in the next few days anyway but am wondering if this is something that others would be upset about in their street?

I really couldn’t get worked up about this, I would have no interest in anyone who could. Neighbour sounds like a miserable git. If he doesn’t want it there he can sweep it up.

OP will be headline news later after having the front door clattered in with the big red key, tasered and arrested by 10 coppers.

We can only hope 😉

notacooldad · 27/12/2025 09:53

Love the up in arms MN outrage 😂 it’s a bit of porridge that’s spilled out into a road
Its not though. The glitter is a problem.

AltitudeCheck · 27/12/2025 09:53

Teaching your kids it's ok to throw litter on the ground, not to clean up when they accidentally make a mess outside the garden, being rude when someone asks them to clean up??

Food mixed with glitter that passing wildlife/ dogs may eat?

Yes I would be pissed off and think my neighbours were bad mannered/ raising brats!

CatrionaBalfour · 27/12/2025 09:54

Sad Face Daily Mail Headlines Alert:
"It was for the kiddies, a bit of Christmas fun, we love glitter and who knew it would cause the 63 bus to skid and crash into that Nativity Scene?
Some people are just miserable Scrooges"

Tink3rbell30 · 27/12/2025 09:54

Get it swept up quickly, glitter can harm birds etc.

This really grates on me as I’m a teacher and a lot of the kids have this attitude. If I don’t want their gum stuck under the table, I can clear it up, because they’re not going to remove it once they’ve stuck it there. If they’ve cut paper into a million little pieces and dropped it on the floor, then I can go get a hoover as it’s easier than them having to pick it up, and besides it’s only me who is bothered by it being there, so it’s for me to sort. If they’ve smeared ketchup all over the lunch table on purpose, it doesn’t matter because they’re leaving now and someone else gets to sit there, plus there are lunchtime supervisors who are paid to run around after them. Since when did it become ok to cause a mess and expect other people to either like it or sort it?

cadburyegg · 26/12/2025 23:52

How much of it is there? It must be a lot if someone is complaining about it. I don’t understand why it has to go on a public road. “Reindeer food” should just be a small amount scattered in a back garden.

Not necessarily - I remember someone once posting about their neighbour going nuclear due to chalk on the public pavement. Some people do complain about fuck all.

Yeah, to be fair, chalk on a pavement is completely different!

Yes, it's a strong level of entitlement and a self centred approach.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 27/12/2025 10:02

I wouldn't bother complaining about this myself, but given that your family's actions have upset your neighbours, just go out and sweep it up. It'll take a couple of minutes, I don't get why you wouldn't?

I have come across a couple of people who think that once something is on the public road, it ceases to be their responsibility, even if it originated from them. Are you one of those?

Climbingrosexx · 27/12/2025 10:02

Clean up after your kids and stop being rude to the neighbours. This sounds like a right mess which could be trodden into houses and cause issues for wildlife, but as long as your kids are having fun hey? Also where does this stupid glitter idea come from?

justpassmethemouse · 27/12/2025 10:04

Haven’t read the whole thread but,

What’s wrong with a carrot?

Namechangedndnf · 27/12/2025 10:06

It should be cleared up asap. The glitter is harmful to wildlife.

Yeah, that was my suggestion! Fairly trouble free, I would think.

AllyinWoodland · 27/12/2025 10:06

Just clean it up and say sorry. I was annoyed when my kids brought reindeer food home from school, but we just put it in a bowl next to Santa’s biscuit. No need for it in the street.

thebabessavedme · 27/12/2025 10:07

What is this nonsense? what the fuck happened to leaving a bloody carrot and a mince pie out near the tree in the living room?

Stop doing idiotic things with Oats and Glitter just because you've seen some old shite on social media.

UncannyFanny · 27/12/2025 10:07

fashionqueen0123 · 26/12/2025 23:47

We do the same and I can imagine one particular neighbour being exactly like this. No one else would be though, our street has lots of young children. And a few grumpy older nosy people!
We just put it on our front lawn and I try to avoid the pavement only because I don’t want the kids asking why it’s not been eaten the next day!

But surely you still have to explain it anyway because it won’t be eaten the next day anyway?

Greenfinger1 · 27/12/2025 10:09

I don't get why you haven't cleaned it up?

  1. Nice idea for the kids.
  2. You've had your fun, now go and cleanup the mess. Better still, go and get the children to help and be a proper role-model!
wandawaves · 27/12/2025 10:09

HumbleStumble · 27/12/2025 09:11

Ignore the pearl-clutchers OP. The rain will take care of the 'offensive' oats. Hope the reindeer liked it!

But the reindeer didn't like it. They turned their noses up at the stuff, hence why it's still all over the place and the neighbour is complaining.

Ridiculous isn’t it? Let’s teach the kids to throw food all over the place. Won’t that be fun!

WhamBamThankU · 27/12/2025 10:12

Of course you clean it up. Doesn’t matter if it’s ‘overspill’

MyChristmasCheerHasBuggeredOff · 27/12/2025 10:13

There was no need for the glitter. I would be annoyed ! So bad for wildlife

Oats not so bad but depends how much of it there is
Why havent the birds eaten it?
I presume cause its covered in glitter?
It will attract rats. You keednto sweep it up if its still there

DancingNotDrowning · 27/12/2025 09:16

What is lazy is coming on MN in full attack mode over a handful of oats and a couple of pinches of glitter, treating OP like she is personally and single handedly responsible for the death and destruction of Earth.

This whole thread is a great example of frustrated people needing an opportunity to stick the boot in presumably because they were gifted a bottle of Baylis and Harding or had to wrap their own present from their “D”H 🙄

Most of the examples of use I gave (laundry pods, plastic bottles, synthetic clothing) are easy to swap out if you care about the environment and the impact would be far far more significant than avoiding the pinch of Christmas glitter, but I guess it’s much less fun than the sanctimonious boot up the arse posters love to dish out

😆 the irony of your post 🤣

nettie434 · 27/12/2025 10:15

I wouldn't be pleased because of the risk of rats.
