Want to go away next year for Christmas.

Guests not here yet and dinner semi under way but I’m exhausted. I would like to go away and be wined and dined.
Has anyone done exactly this and if yes was it as lovely as I imagine.
I would like a nice hotel, a fabulous Christmas dinner, come and go as I please, yes hubby will be with me but no children preferably.
All recommendations gratefully accepted. We live SE but happy to travel to the perfect place.

Please Santa grant me this one request next year. 🎄

I did it once with a friend, and hated it. Once with DH and DD, and they hated it. And we love travelling.

Paramaribo2025 · 25/12/2025 17:00

Maldives or Boracay next year.

I would love to go away for Christmas....no cooking sheer bliss

Bookmarking, as going away is one of our options for next year.

Same here. Don’t really do a big Christmas and just think it would be nice to have a change. I know a couple of people currently away and im slightly jealous.

Feelinguselesssigh · 25/12/2025 17:29

AI Caribbean here - Spanish speaking - feliz navidad.

it is beyond amazing and worth every penny. Sunset beaches with ice cold beers.

100/10 would recommend

After a completely shit Christmas last year thanks to elderly relatives we promised ourselves we would go away this year. We warned our adult DC and made sure BIL would have MIL and so here we are completely stuffed after a wonderful Christmas dinner in a Pig Hotel. We've retired to our room to loosen clothing and relax till this evening's buffet. For us its just a one off and we'll be at home as usual next year but its been a fabulous experience so far.

Is that a typo for big hotel, or actually a hotel that features pigs?

StillNiceCardigan · 25/12/2025 17:35

Its a chain of hotels www.thepighotel.com

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 25/12/2025 17:40

We did it last year in Sri Lanka. It was ok but we were grieving my Dad and the hotel was a bit shit.
However this year hasn’t been amazing so I want to go away again next year, better hotel, different destination.
I’d like to alternate home and away… I have felt much more up for Christmas this year after a 2 year gap!

NutButterOnToast · 25/12/2025 17:40

We're in Egypt. AI hotel, going on a trip to Luxor tomorrow

We go away every year for Xmas since 2017 and the covid years. Been to all sorts of places and all of them better weather than the UK.

Christmas is a great time to go on holiday. Lots of places are quieter than normal tourist wise which is a bonus if you're into sightseeing/ culture.

We're not bothered about recreating any sort of trad Xmas.

husbandcallsmepickle · 25/12/2025 17:42

I've just logged onto mumsnet to write this exact post. I just can't do this anymore. Next year I'm disappearing

bleakmidwintering · 25/12/2025 17:46

I once spent a Christmas Day scuba diving in Bali. That was nice but I hadn’t had kids at that stage.

IHadaMarvelousTimeRuiningEverything · 25/12/2025 17:58

We're going on a cruise to the Caribbean next Christmas for a fortnight. Can't wait. It feels so good knowing I don't have to cook xmas dinner for at least 2 years.

Hunsterbunster · 25/12/2025 18:35

We’ve been in an AI resort in Cancun for the past 5 days with another 5 to go. Blue skies, amazing pools, kids having a ball, zero stress. Totally recommend paying extra for somewhere high end. Best Christmas ever!

MagentaRocks · 25/12/2025 18:54

We are away at the moment. Rural Airbnb with walks for the dogs, hot tub and the most cooking we have done is putting party food in the over for 20 minutes.

It has been very relaxing

I’m here for Christmas https://www.thecapaldi.com
and it’s bliss. Just DH and I, no kids under 12 allowed and absolutely zero Christmas bollox. The joy of having Ibiza chill out vibe music, not Slade while eating excellent food can’t be beaten imho

Oh I love this hotel. We’ve been twice. Is it warm now?

WhereYouLeftIt · 25/12/2025 20:43

I can't afford it, but I would love to spend Christmas in Burgh Island! An art deco hotel, it's £3,000 for the three-day break. But on top of that you'd want a 1920's wardrobe to dress in, wouldn't you?

I can dream ...

Sadly today the weather was q bad, unusually as we’ve had 7 christmases in Morocco and this is the worst weather, but tomorrow is forecast sun 😊

piscofrisco · 26/12/2025 05:23

We were meant to be away this year (just dh and I) in a beautiful alpine resort. We had to cancel it as my dad died in the summer and we felt we couldn’t leave mum on her own. It’s been ok-bit boring but ok. But I really want to do our own thing one Christmas and not have to please everyone else. Next year we will have all the kids all being well but the one after that we’ve earmarked for ourselves!

Mikart · 26/12/2025 05:38

Dh and I are in a little cottage on the Welsh coast for a week. We always have quiet Xmasses but this has honestly been the best. Brought food from Cook for Xas Eve/Day, cheese/ charcuterie for tonight then eating out rest of the week.
Cottage has everything...fabulous kitchen, comfy sofas, its warm and has views of the sea.
And the weather is perfect! Big walks every day, drinks at the pubs and lots of reading.
We shall do this again next year...I wouldn't go to a hotel though as I dont like other people at Xmas

We're in Estepona area Spain now staying in a friends place. Buses running, cafes, shops and restaurants open today. Spanish celebrate on Xmas Eve and 6 Jan. so nice here. Weather not perfect but it is December! Been dojng this for a few years now and will not, barring illness/inability to travel spend Christmas at home again.

We're in Spain too, near(ish) to Cadiz and the weather is lovely, balmy and mild with quite a bit of sun. Balcony weather even if not quite t-shirt weather.
It's fairly quiet here, a few bars were open yesterday and today is a normal day so I'm expecting everything to be open.
Feeling very relaxed and can recommend it heartily!

I'm away in a hotel, and not enjoying it. Just feel awful for the poor people having to work so I can have a good time. Except I'm not having a good time as I feel rubbish about it all. I've booked a massage later- who on earth wants to spend their Christmas day giving me a massage when they could be doing something lovely of their own choosing?

I've done a cottage away and self catered. I'd do that again in a heartbeat, but I'd never do this again.

But they are getting paid to look after you and may even be happy not to spend time with their family. You must have realised this before you booked?

PantaloonMad · 26/12/2025 07:49

Yes I’m at an all inclusive in the Canaries right now. No cooking or washing up! I’m with kids but there is an adults only section of the resort. We spent Xmas morning on the local beach which had a great atmosphere, with people in Santa hats and the kids splashing around in the sea. My parents have taken themselves off to a posh hotel in the UK for a couple of nights, have forgotten what it’s called, something like Haymead. And we’ll all see each other for new years. Won’t do this every year but it’s a lovely change up to the routine and I thoroughly recommend!

LoudSnoringDog · 26/12/2025 08:00

Love this thread! We normally go away Boxing Day / 27th and spend Xmas day at home to facilitate the adult kids. Yesterday was lovely but they spent most of the day hungover in bed. Seriously contemplating telling them to sort themselves out next year and that we intend to go away.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 26/12/2025 08:01

We absolutely will when DC are a little older and spending Xmas with partners and their family. My GP used to go abroad just before Xmas every year and we wouldn’t see them again until Easter!

mumofthree22 · 26/12/2025 08:14

We are currently in an amazing ultra All Inclusive 5* hotel in Turkey- had a fab 5 course gala meal and entertainment on 24th and relaxed on the beach Xmas day - is bliss. 1st time away over Xmas (me and DH and teenage kids) and we are definitely going to do it again next year!
