I have been having issues with breathing and mucus a lot of it
Waking up coughing and gasping for air
Anyway completed a e consult forum
They’ve gave me a appointment with a medical student not a GP
I know everyone has to learn etc but would you be happy with this ?

Absolutely. In effect you will have two people investigating and the student will weigh all possible causes.

Bowies · 23/12/2025 11:04

Yes.

They will be directly or indirectly supervised by someone qualified and experienced.

HelpMeGetThrough · 23/12/2025 11:05

No and I do refuse when I’ve been asked. I understand they need to learn, but not with me.

Yes. They will be supervised and will probably be more thorough than a GP. Also, they might have more up-to-date knowledge.

Interesting attitude.

At our GP surgery we have doctors but you'll be seen faster by paramedics.
Absolutely love them, they know all the basics, and they're not arrogant, they'll do everything. They will listen, take bloods, and get things sorted for you.
Whereas the GP will send you for a blood test next week!
Like, if the paramedic can do it all, why can't the GP?
Saves time for everyone.
Anyway, unless its a very serious thing, anyone is better than doctors these days, dunno if they're just bored with life or something.
Locums are great too tbh
Just not regular doctors 😅

Edited

Paramedics are usually given longer appointment times so have more time.

K0OLA1D · 23/12/2025 13:52

From my experience they are way more thorough. I assume to not miss anything. Id prefer it tbh.

Christ 🙄

TeaRoseTallulah · 23/12/2025 13:54

I'd be fine with that ,it's the prescribing paramedics I don't want to see.

FrippEnos · 23/12/2025 13:59

I have been quite happy with the medical students, paramedics and nurses that I have seen.

I am of the opinion that the way to think about this is that it gets you in the system.

So do you refuse treatment avd care from Student Nurses too? How do you feel about Junior Doctors? Do you insist on on conversing with the Consultant?

TheLivelyCat · 23/12/2025 16:50

I've had appointments before with student GPs, they are qualified doctors, in my case they spoke to their supervisor GP to get a second opinion on something.

It will be a student/trainee GP. They will have been qualifies for at least 5-8 years. A qualified GP will be close by as well

A medical student is an unqualified undergraduate. A trainee GP is a qualified doctor.

I recently had a gp appointment with a paramedic! He was very thorough, very helpful and the appointment wasn’t rushed. Also was treated by the pharmacist for a uti, given antibiotics all within 5 minutes.

MayaPinion · 24/12/2025 08:19

Yes, completely normal. My DD had one with a 5th year med student last week. He took all her details and when it looked to be something a bit more complicated than the common ailments at this time of year he went to the doctor who returned with him to ask more questions. You can also ask a pharmacist for quick health related advice.

When you think about it, GPs spend a lot of time dealing with low level illnesses (colds, flu, sore armpits, gummy eye, bit of a limp, etc.) that could easily be dealt with by a nurse/pharmacist/physio/a student with over 4 years training in the classroom and on wards, etc.

It doesn’t say she will be supervised ,it says we have booked you an appointment with “Lisa medical student “

All their notes on the appointment will be scrutinised and if they have any doubts during the appointment they will call in a GP. We have the same situation when we see a Physician Associate.

ContentedAlpaca · 24/12/2025 10:19

My only experience of them was negative. A very jaundiced 3 week old and two trainees who didn't understand a thing about breastfeeding. I was a worried mother, but felt like I spent the time explaining/educating.
That experience would probably colour my decision.

Ladyymuck · 24/12/2025 10:33

Yes I’ve had this before and they are supervised. The student Doctor I had was very thorough and conscientious.

pigmygoatsinjumpers · 24/12/2025 12:00

My GP practice is part of a five practice group. It's a training/teaching practice.

This is their explanation of the different levels of qualification for those who have short-term placements within the practice who are not GP partners, salaried GPs or locums:

Yes I'd be fine with it, my DP is a medical student and recently did a GP placement. He would have a few appointments (just a few) which were then checked over by the GP, but it seems he did fine and the patients were very happy
