I have been having issues with breathing and mucus a lot of it
Waking up coughing and gasping for air
Anyway completed a e consult forum
They’ve gave me a appointment with a medical student not a GP
I know everyone has to learn etc but would you be happy with this ?

Absolutely, I am a nurse and I’ve had this/ they were really thorough, had more time and often really up to date with current thinking/evidence. Also they double check everything as others have said

LeroyJenkinssss · 22/12/2025 11:25

*undifferentiated rather than underestimated!

PauliesWalnuts · 22/12/2025 11:27

I wouldn’t hesitate. I went in with a gynae issue and had a GP registrar - she was amazing and basically gave me my life back.

I called up and she will be unsupervised in the room but at the end of the day a senior GP checks over notes etc

I saw one who was set up to record the appointment (I can’t remember is it was sound only, or sound and video). This was then used to review her work later.

Edited to add that my permission was sought at the start of the appointment for this, with no pressure either way.

TessSaysYes · 22/12/2025 11:27

Personally no.
But like a lot of people on here, I'm cool with other people seeing trainers.

pigmygoatsinjumpers · 22/12/2025 11:28

This is not my practice but sets out how medical students work within this practice:

(Note this guidance is for "medical students" - not GPs in training (who are already qualified to practice in hospitals but are doing the three year GP specialty training,)

EyeLevelStick · 22/12/2025 11:34

I’d be wary in the same way as I’d be wary about a Physician’s Associate.

A trainee GP I’d be very happy about.

comeundone · 22/12/2025 11:35

Have been seen by medical students multiple times in various settings, as local practices, outpatient services and hospital are training settings. The reception and GP staff will be considering the cases in preparing a list for the student and they can only prescribe with sign off from a qualified doctor. This practice under supervision is a vital part of their training and I!and my family) have had good experiences at the hands of students.

drivinmecrazy · 22/12/2025 11:52

Absolutely fine with me , from experience.
I think that they were more thorough and less fatigued than my usual GP.
She was a delight and hope she’s gone onto a wonderful career.

Greybeardy · 22/12/2025 11:55

Given the date it’s quite likely Lisa will actually be a resident doctor rather than a student - can’t remember exactly when we stopped for Christmas when I was young, but am pretty sure we’d have been off now even in 4th/5th yrs.

Rowgtfc72 · 22/12/2025 11:57

Our gps a training practice. Med students are F2s i think . Quicker to see the student and they have to have any treatment or prescription approved.
Seen some lovely med students in my time.

F2’s are not medical students they’re resident doctors.

Milkbloo · 22/12/2025 11:59

In theory, yes. In reality when I saw a very young gp, she was the worst doctor I’ve ever seen, I was shocked at how dense she was. So I’d be very wary, and hope to have my fears allayed.

Kagoule · 22/12/2025 12:00

Yes I have had trainees and always had excellent treatment

BearSoFair · 22/12/2025 12:00

Yes. I had an appointment with a trainee GP in October for a kidney infection, she wasn't supervised in a 'another person in the room' sense but was able to quickly call another GP in for a second opinion when she was unsure whether I needed to be sent to hospital.

TigerRag · 22/12/2025 12:00

The local university sometimes sends medical students on work experience to my GP surgery including the one where I had to sign something to ask about recording my appointment. I've seen that particular doctor a few times when he was a student and he was really good.

I've had minor surgery done by a student

As someone with an undiagnosed condition I've sometimes been seen by the students at the eye hospital

I've been seen by trainee opticians. I remember one thanking me. He'd never come across the diagnosed condition I have when he's seen others

(I have 2 eye conditions - one seems to be the underlying cause for the condition that was originally diagnosed but no one can give a name to the underlying cause)

Marmite1992 · 22/12/2025 12:00

I had a GP appt with a medical student and it was the most thorough appointment I've ever had. The supervising GP then came in at the end and discussed everything in further detail with myself and the student and I was really impressed!!

poppetandmog · 22/12/2025 10:57

Honestly I think you’re likely to get better service from a trainee. They will be more enthusiastic/eager to help and have up to date knowledge.

This. My husband has spent a great deal of time in hospital this year. His life was saved by a young, curious, recently qualified doctor in A&E after a very serious underlying condition was missed on two previous visits by older, more experienced doctors.

JamesClyman · 22/12/2025 12:04

Yes. I have been seen by students before now and had no issues with it.

ClaredeBear · 22/12/2025 12:11

Yes, I would. I trust they will seek advise from their supervisor if they’re unsure.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 22/12/2025 12:20

I have found trainee GPs, who are already doctors, to be much more friendly, empathetic, sympathetic and concientous than the established GPs at my surgery, on multiple occasions now, so yes. I think I prefer seeing doctors who aren't jaded and worn down tbh.

Readingislife · 22/12/2025 12:20

Yes absolutely.

Lifelover16 · 22/12/2025 12:27

In theory, yes. I have been seen by 2 enthusiastic and helpful GP registrars. And one who was abysmal, very poor consultation and exam technique and no infection control whasover. She did refer me to dermatologist for a skin lesion but the referral was incorrect and stated the wrong area of my body.
so I’d say yes with reservations

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 22/12/2025 12:32

I like it when I get a registrar. Means I get a 30 minute appt!

Ellie1015 · 22/12/2025 12:35

I had an appointment with trainee GP. Very thorough and already a qualified dr. At the end he let me know his thoughts and that he had to run everything by someone else so would be back in a few mins.

If anything more conscientious and up to date than previous appointments.
