I'm sitting here trying to make a list of things to get tomorrow. I have a sainsbury slot booked for Tuesday but no idea what to put in it!
We don't make a big deal about xmas it's usually just a roast and a few extra things.

Its been a difficult stressful year so we're all feeling a bit meh.
I don't really feel like doing much cooking so we've agreed just to do party/picky food.
I wandered round shops yesterday and looked but didn't really fancy any of it.

Give me ideas- I have sainsbury, also, lidl, iceland, m&s and waitrose near by!

Help!

I’ve not done any either. Way too early for that!

OneWorthyTiger · 21/12/2025 12:28

I've got everything in already but the shops are open so you'll likely get everything you want or need.

It's just a fancier roast. No need for anyone to get stressed about it.

MarxistMags · 21/12/2025 12:32

Not yet. It's been a difficult year with illness and different health problems within the family.
I can't be bothered.... Fortunately there is only DH and I. And I love trifle 😂

Im not cooking this year as we won’t be at home on Christmas Day but I always say “It’s just a roast”. I have stocked up on flour butter sugar eggs as we do lots of baking in the run up to Christmas. In your situation I would get
Whatever meat you are having
Potatoes, veg etc that you fancy. I like carrots, parsnips, a fancy cabbage maybe
Side bits like stuffing pigs in blankets etc
Whatever pudding you like. I made this chocolate and pear pudding last year which I made ahead of time and froze. A trifle is always popular.
Anything you like to drink
Some party food to bung in the oven
Some cheese

Squidgy chocolate pear pudding

Squidgy chocolate pear pudding

This hot, gooey chocolate pud, with dark chocolate and canned pears, can be made ahead and frozen – a perfect no-fuss dinner party dessert

Not yet but my Tesco shop arrives tomorrow so I’ll do it online today.

and I will brave m and s early tomorrow morning

Cigarette · 21/12/2025 12:34

Nope. There’s days yet. I’ve been prioritising trying to get a renovation finished to the point where we can host (three days ago we had no hob), and having fun.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 21/12/2025 12:35

I’ve got stuff like crisps, nuts, sweets and biscuits but real food yet. Will probably go Tuesday or Christmas Eve. We’re never to fussed about what we have so happy to take my chances with what’s available. Don’t seem to have enough head space to plan ahead so drifting around Tesco plonking stuff in my trolley is my usual strategy.

AmIHumanOrAmIAYeti · 21/12/2025 12:36

Have got the beans and the cheese and the butter. Will just need bread at some point between now and then.

TheChosenTwo · 21/12/2025 12:37

I have a slot booked coming tomorrow but I’ve not put much in there. Dh has reserved the meat from the butchers and will collect Tuesday.
still plenty of time and dh is off now; I’ll be off from tomorrow afternoon so no need to be worrying about any of it, we both have cars and dc who drive also with cars, 4 large supermarkets within 1.5 miles distance, someone can be dispatched to get anything crucial. Also about 6 walkable co-op/one stop/budgens type places too.

PrincessofWells · 21/12/2025 12:38

Nope, nothing 😎

Cactus12 · 21/12/2025 12:38

Sorry to hear you’ve had a rubbish year 💐

A few years ago I had just moved house, had 2 small children and family coming over and frankly I just couldn’t be arsed with cooking so I got EVERYTHING ready made from M&S - ready made gravy, roasties on a tray that you just bung in the oven, microwave cauliflower cheese, the lot! More expensive than normal but honestly for my sanity it was worth it! And everyone loved it 😁

LardoBurrows · 21/12/2025 12:55

I just came on to suggest the ready made option like a pp.
If are not feeling up to cooking from scratch, just buy some decent ready made meals that you just bung in the oven. M&S meals are lovely, and Charlie Bingham ready meals are decent quality. Also frozen veg and roast potatoes.

Some decent quality ice cream and puddings and you are good to go.

I would also buy some savoury nibbles, nuts, cheeses, fresh fruit and something very quaffable and that would be it.

Disturbia81 · 21/12/2025 12:57

No, there’s always everything available at last minute

Chewbecca · 21/12/2025 13:22

Tuesday is fine for me. Leaves plenty of time to remember what I forgot first trip too.

Thesofathatwas · 21/12/2025 13:29

Aldi is open at 7am and M&S open at 6am in the morning so to avoid the crowds I’m going to go then, be done and home by 8am!

Got my list BUT it’s a Sunday dinner with a nice sweet in this house and picky bits for Christmas Eve so nowt fancy at all, whatsoever..

I canny be fucked to get excited, stressed or fussed. I’m tired. I’m grumpy. I’m old.

Mydogisagentleman · 21/12/2025 13:41

Nope. Ordered the meat from the butcher for collection before I start work on 24th.
Going for the other stuff shortly.

Iamafaithfull · 21/12/2025 13:43

I am sorry to hear you have had a tough time . Do whatever will make life easier for you . Some years I would be tempted to go down the non traditional route and have a takeaway . If you aren’t too rural , I think some Chinese takeaways may be opened . I think I would still have a back up plan of something else in the freezer , in case they close due to staff sickness - so may defeat the purpose !

I am close to 4 supermarkets and due to the dreaded flu - only ventured out on Friday this week . I went to Sainsburys , but a lot of their fresh food - was going out of date on Christmas Eve …So will need to go out again as don’t have a large freezer .
Agree with what others have said - if you are going traditional get some ready made extras , red cabbage , cauliflower , Yorkshire puds , gravy etc .
I got a crown instead of the faff of a whole bird . I am also going to pick up a ( small ) beef joint as several of my kids aren’t poultry fans .

They also had some nice party food options , so I got some of those - spring rolls , posh sausage rolls etc .
I love parsnips , hate brussel sprouts , but the DC love them so have got some . I will pick up some ready prepared roasting potatoes , etc tomorrow .

I am going to get a ready made chocolate log and some nice ice cream- cream and custard - as not a fan of Christmas pudding etc .
Check when your supermarkets re- open and just plan until then if too much of a mental load otherwise . Ours is Boxing Day .

Get some nice snacks , chocolates . We always have to have quality street . Lidl if you have one near also does lovely chocolate & ginger biscuits .
I hate shopping when it is really busy , so also avoid really busy times . Gauge when you turn up at the supermarket , if the car park is full - if it isn’t a long trip I would go to another supermarket , come back later .
Hope you and your family have a lovely time .

ChopstickNovice · 21/12/2025 13:46

My parents are coming to me. DH is easygoing. My mum and I like to go to the shops Christmas Eve and see what big joints of meat are reduced! DS9 won't mind what we eat as long as it's not turkey. We all hate turkey though :)

AddictedToBooks · 21/12/2025 14:00

I've just received an Iceland shop this morning - lots of slots and lots of offers and cheap prices on Christmas food, so if you want something "special", you'll find something.

I'm sorry that you're feeling "meh" - to be honest I am too - I've had a weekend from utter hell and right now feel like giving up, so you have my empathy x

Taytocrisps · 21/12/2025 14:19

Sorry it's been a tough year for you. I've lots of booze and I was given a present of a tub of chocolates. I picked up some mince pies yesterday.

I'll do the big shop on Tuesday - lots of veg. to cook and bring with me (hosts are doing the meat), breakfast ingredients, trifle, Christmas pudding, cream to go with the pudding etc. And I might trek to the nearest Sheridans for some good cheese. You need to put some nice cheese on your list.

If you're just doing party/picky food, then maybe get some cocktail sausages, chicken goujons, potato wedges, ready to bung in the oven lasagne etc. They always go down well at any party I've ever been at. M&S do a nice Indian selection Indian Style Starter Selection | M&S. M&S are good for quiches also.

Don't forget to ask your family members if there's anything they really want in terms of food over the Christmas period.

I know you're going for a low effort Christmas but don't forget to check the basics also - tea, coffee, milk, bread, butter, fruit, breakfast cereal, dog/cat food, cat litter, loo rolls, etc. You don't need to stock up for a fortnight or anything. Just enough to see you through until the shops are open, or you're ready to hit the shops again.

Indian Style Starter Selection | M&S

Our Indian Starter Selection contains a tempting array of Indian-style vegetable samosas, onion bhajis and vegetable pakoras. A great side dish for your next curry night, or for adding a touch of spice to a party buffet.

vanillalattes · 21/12/2025 14:37

Our Morrisons’s shop is booked and due to arrive tomorrow morning. I don’t plan on going anywhere near a supermarket until at least December 29th!

madaboutpurple · 21/12/2025 15:34

As long as a tub of Roses is included I will be fine so it will be chocs for breakfast ,noon and night ,not quite as a roast dinner will be done Chocolates for the evening hopefully watching comedy.

maddiemookins16mum · 21/12/2025 15:52

I’m going tomorrow for the ‘big shop’ (it’s a 2 week shop!). Then on Christmas Eve I’m popping to our lovely small Coop for salad stuff. We have two chest freezers in our garage so am lucky to be able to freeze lots of food - bread and milk included.
