People who have been all around America

Where was your favourite place? I've only ever done the east coast. I liked Washington DC. NYC was too crowded. I went this summer but I probably won't go to the US again for a few years.

If you've been all around. Tell me about it however. If you lived and worked there what was it like?

I haven’t been, but I would love to visit Nantucket.

Fgowfms · 18/12/2025 18:29

DH has been for business a few years ago. He loved San Francisco.

Joshua Tree and Palm Springs were my favourite places.

Mcpdon · 18/12/2025 18:40

I like the national parks. Yellowstone and Yosemite.

mindutopia · 18/12/2025 18:42

Lived in the US for 30 years. There are some really interesting bits that are very unlike anything we have here. The Florida Keys, Nantucket/Cape Cod, the South West in general (Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado), Montana, the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Portland, Bend and rural areas around all of them) are all very interesting.

I used to live in San Francisco and didn’t love it, too touristy and a bit boring, and too many drug users for me.

But all the places above are very cool and where I’d like to take dc back one day (we all have dual citizenship, for now anyway unless we are forced to give it up).

The challenging things about America are just the lack of decent public transport and it’s just not safe. I can walk around just about anywhere in the UK and feel safe. I don’t lock my doors just when I’m roaming around at home. I definitely wouldn’t go wandering around at night a lot of places in the US. I definitely used to come home and immediately bolt my door behind me. It was a very different sense of being constantly hypervigilent of my surroundings that I’ve rarely experienced in the UK.

Hilton Head Island. A beautiful place.

Soonenough · 18/12/2025 18:45

Unfortunately because of Trump I wouldn't go back to the US at all . Hopefully things will change and I can return to NYC my favourite.

Purlant · 18/12/2025 18:46

Everywhere is just so different!! It’s like saying where should I go in Europe! What sort of things do you like?

Same, I lived in NY for 6 months in my early twenties. I had a good time!

I haven’t been all around but I loved a visit to California. San Francisco, Yosemite and Santa Barbara were real highlights. I’d love to go back.

Oh wow. You feel that safe in the UK? Where abouts in the UK did you stay?

When I went. I went to stay with DBro who migrated to the US in the late 90s. I was surprised that in his area they leave doors unlocked and all that because the area is so safe and everyone knows each other.

Central coast of California. Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur

SabrinaThwaite · 18/12/2025 18:53

Big Bend (Texas) and Lassen Volcanic (California) NPs.

Zion, Arches, Bridges, Bryce Canyon and Death Valley NPs (Nevada / Utah / New Mexico).

New England - Maine, the White Mountains, Rhode Island.

Be aware that the Trump admin is loading NP admission prices for non residents - some parks will attract an extra $100 per person fee, and the America the Beautiful pass goes up from $80 to $250.

Fgowfms · 18/12/2025 18:54

What did you all love about it?

MrsHamlet · 18/12/2025 18:55

North Dakota, Alaska and Molokai in Hawaii are my favourites. Not in the same trip though.

CosyMintFish · 18/12/2025 18:55

Texas. I found the people super friendly, and I love the scale of everything there.

gogomomo2 · 18/12/2025 18:55

West Coast but not major cities is amazing, landscapes, wildlife etc. I lived in the Pacific Northwest- wouldn’t visit now due to you know who but i highly recommend British Columbia Canada!

canklesmctacotits · 18/12/2025 18:58

All the national parks. The geography of the central and northern americas is exceptional, when it’s not concreted over. Same goes for Hawaii. Many are unique and there are many different types.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/12/2025 19:03

California was amazing, loved the whole of the west coast.

SabrinaThwaite · 18/12/2025 19:15

Texas. I found the people super friendly, and I love the scale of everything there.

Lived there for a year and really enjoyed it.

People are very polite (but then many people are likely to have a firearm) and they are friendly, but we found it hard to get to know people properly, but then we were the blow ins.

Scenery in the NPs is just spectacular.

I have done a lot of travelling in the USA. It’s an incredible country. New York is the only city in the world really that compares with London in lots of ways.

New Orleans is my favourite USA city. I adore it.

I probably won’t go back while the current shitshow is in govt.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 18/12/2025 19:20

SF was bloody awful. Saw several people shooting on the pavement. The homeless mess is out of control. Denver is cool and you have easy access to to the Rockies.

porridgeforbrekkie · 18/12/2025 19:29

I’ve visited 44 states and I think my favourite was Washington State. I found it fascinating how each state is like its own mini country, sometimes even with different laws and its own unique culture.

I lived for extended periods in Michigan (worst winters!) and also San Francisco. SF (at the time) was beautiful, foggy, sunny and balmy with glimpses of Alcatraz marooned out in the bay. I’ve not been back for several years but friends tell me it’s really gone downhill.

Strokethefurrywall · 18/12/2025 19:52

I’ve travelled US for business and pleasure for years and now live in Caribbean so closest city to us is Miami and hours flight.
Love NYC, Palm Springs, Nashville and Chicago. Austin was ok, Denver is cool, Breckenridge is lovely. Vegas is mad but great fun but I didn’t really enjoy LA, I’d like to go back to see if I feel differently. Florida is, well, Florida. We go there for weekend getaways. Tampa is a great city.

There are so many great cities in the US, from our POV we have to determine how much ESTA changes will impact our travel especially as we often transit through or need to go for work/kids sports tournaments.

Pedallleur · 18/12/2025 20:42

Vermont was beautiful. Very green. Small state. Colorado stunning with the mountains and some great towns like Boulder or Vail and Wyoming empty of people. Yellowstone and Grand Tetons are there so lots of scenery but Jackson Hole is expensive. SW around Phoenix/Tucson was hot and it is desert but the Grand Canyon is something you need to see. Words can't explain it. Stayed at Monument Valley, scene of various films. Amazing. Northern California was stunning. Drove up the coast, Hearst Mansion, Big Sur and Yosemite. San Francisco a big city with all the problems that come with that.
