Preschool books you love to read

Id like to get some new children’s books for Christmas- some really good ones. Not just peppa pig and bing as they bore me to tears!

I can almost always read any by Julia Donaldson, Judith Kerr and Jilly Murphy. Love the Allbergs. I know some of these are old schools.

Are there any more modern ones that are fun to read again and again?

You Choose was a favourite with me and my DC.

Mauvish1 · 16/12/2025 19:12

I like Jane Simmons books - we have a few.

Also, Owl babies.

And, We're going on a bear hunt.

Hairy Mcclary et al

Omg You Choose is endlessly popular. I think I've read it about 500,000 times.

I like the Little Red Train books. They stand up to a lot of re-reading.

The Hairy McClary and Slinky Malinky books are also very readable.

The Quentin Blake books are also fab. Mister Magnolia and Mrs Armitage in particular.

None of these are modern, but they are all timeless.

Mine liked Judith Kerr, all the Mog books!

My daughter loved the Blue Kangaroo books by Emma Chichester Clark.

Audhumla · 16/12/2025 19:20

Dogger! And others by Shirley Hughes. If you're not familiar it's a story about a boy who loses his toy dog and his kind big sister who helps him get it back, not that kind of dogger 😄

We love that one too but you did make me laugh!

Mine loved Dogger and the Alfie ones!

The book with no pictures

Oi frog and the others in the series

These are the main ones I'm still not allowed to get rid of and my youngest is 9 now...

It may depend on your taste a bit, but here are some of our favourites.

Hogbert I love the illustrations in this one.

A Practical Present for Phillipa Pheasant we love the illustrations in this too. And all pheasants we see are now called Philippa or Phillip 😂

The Snow Thief all of these are great, informative and funny

Not Now Bernard both my children are obsessed with this, I find it disturbing but they love it!

Coming Home Michael Morpurgo - might be for slightly older children but my ds (5 today!) likes it.

Oh Dear Look What I Got Michael Rosen - I bought this as at the time DD was obsessed with bear hunt and she got obsessed with this too, it’s great.

The Big Dreaming also by Michael Rosen, lovely calm book with gorgeous illustrations.

Sleep Tight Disgusting Blob has been a favourite for months now; if your dc likes funny books, it’s great. Ds has now been nicknamed disgusting blob.

There are more but they are some of my personal favourites!

everdine · 16/12/2025 19:24

Katie Morag was popular too with mine.

whatwasthatnoise · 16/12/2025 19:25

There's a Bear On My Chair by Ross Collins.
This Book Just Ate My Dog by Richard Byrne.
We read these books over and over when my kids were wee. Bear on my chair was my favourite to read to them.

10 little fingers and 10 little toes

TimSamandLulu · 16/12/2025 19:30

One snowy night by Nick Butterworth. I love this one so much.
Three little monkeys by Emma Chichester Clark (where my username comes from)

MoreThanRubies · 16/12/2025 19:35

Ten Little Dinosaurs - great pictures and fun to read. Lots of noises for toddlers to join in with.

I've read Dogger many, many times and never got through it without a tear in the eye. Love it.

Audhumla · 16/12/2025 20:25

Another one I never got bored of is called Through My Window by Tony Bradman. It's about a little girl who is ill at home and waiting for her mother to get home from work - she looks out the window and sees lots of friends and neighbours. It's a lovely little story.

Moosecat29 · 16/12/2025 20:25

Chris Haughton books are always popular with my nursery class. They also enjoy Oliver Jeffers, Martin Waddell and the usual Julia Donaldson, Allbergs and Michael Rosen
