Nervous to try dress on - how bad will it be?

Last Christmas I dragged out a 15yo party dress. I'm sure it's not in the least bit current, but I got loads of complements both in person and on the photos. It's a long column, one shoulder with a big split. A fabric that could be clingy but on me, last year, skimmed everywhere.

Last year I was 54 , 5'7 and 9st 10. It was very form fitting but not clingy.

This year, I'm 10st1, which I haven't noticed in most of my clothes, but I'm worried about this one.

How bad will it be? I was so happy with this dress I haven't planned anything else...

Yes, I know I just have to put it on and see, but humour me?

5lbs doesn't seem very much so if you're not feeling like other clothes are tight it will probably be ok! Bit pointless everyone humouring you though and just giving the same answer... try it on!

3luckystars · 10/12/2025 09:14

That’s only a few pounds, how would anyone notice that unless you are 3 foot tall.

Soduku1234 · 10/12/2025 09:16

You're clearly slim so stop being daft and just wear the lovely dress.

Wear a pair of Spanx and no one will tell the difference. You’re making out you’ve put on 2 stone.

Moveoverdarlin · 10/12/2025 09:19

Depending on when the party is, you could easily shift two pounds in a week.

PigeonsandSquirrels · 10/12/2025 09:19

It’s 5lbs completely depends whether you’ve gained it all over or in one spot. But tbh I gain and lose 5lbs over a couple of days every week.

Spanx don't work with his one because of the split. That's what I'm worried about though, being a but lumpier than last year.

I fluctuate by that on a daily basis! If it's a bit of extra belly fat just wear spanx.

Obviously if it doesn't look right don't force yourself to wear it. But try it with an open mind. It may look virtually identical.

You can get high leg shaping body suits from Marks

But then you get vpl

I've got a pair of unbranded spanx -like pants that are a thong so no VPL. Hideously unattractive when I take my dress off but fantastic underneath. I got them from m&s

ChloeMorningstar · 10/12/2025 10:10

So have you tried it on yet?

What is the point of wondering? No one here will be able to tell you!

venus7 · 10/12/2025 17:59

To be honest, 5lb can make quite a difference. Sorry, probably not reassuring, but true.
I wear some clothes at 8.10 that I wouldn't feel comfortable in at 9.1.

Gamjs · 10/12/2025 18:24

Crash diet? You should lose that in a couple of weeks, but try it on and see how it is.

Parsleyforme · 10/12/2025 18:41

You can get thong bodysuits to avoid VPL. If you love the dress you might be able to get it taken out a bit. Whenever I talk about having had some clothes for 10+ years my friends seem surprised that they still fit, so I think it’s normal for body weight, size and shape to change over time. If you don’t feel comfortable in it this year, you might like the fit again next year. But all you can do is put it on and see (better sooner than later to either put your mind at rest or give you time to get something else sorted)

My Spanx are high legged like normal knickers. They’re not actually Spanx but M&S shape wear. Every shop does them. They are high waisted so suck in and smooth your belly, waist and hips.

exaltedwombat · 10/12/2025 18:45

5 pounds? You. Fat. Pig!

No, hold on, that's rubbish, isn't it? Picture please, when you try it on and it looks even better than last year! :-)

Nothing a pair of Spanx wouldn’t fix. That’s the same weight and height as me and I get loads of compliments about how trim I am. I’m 67.

I recently bought Spanx thong and a £6 Tummy smoothing thong from Asda. The Spanx did nothing but the £6 one was amazing and no vpl

Redrosesposies · 10/12/2025 18:52

In the words of the great Steve Miller from Fat Families, you could just go for a big shit🤣🤣🤣

CatMummyOf3 · 10/12/2025 19:01

At your height and weight, 5lbs is nothing :)

I'm sure you'll look fab, but you're going to have to put it on to know for sure!

Ladygardenerinderby · 10/12/2025 19:17

5 pounds 😂 I wish 😂😂😂 it’s nothing , I go up n down by that weekly depending on what I eat . I think you need to just put the dress on , how can anyone advise without seeing it ????
id be more worried about wearing the same dress two years running to the same event tbh

SwirlyGates · 10/12/2025 19:27

I disagree that 5lb is nothing. I'm also 5'7", and about 5lb heavier than last year. The Christmas dress I wore then is rather tight now and makes me look like a pudding.
