Nervous to try dress on - how bad will it be?

Last Christmas I dragged out a 15yo party dress. I'm sure it's not in the least bit current, but I got loads of complements both in person and on the photos. It's a long column, one shoulder with a big split. A fabric that could be clingy but on me, last year, skimmed everywhere.

Last year I was 54 , 5'7 and 9st 10. It was very form fitting but not clingy.

This year, I'm 10st1, which I haven't noticed in most of my clothes, but I'm worried about this one.

How bad will it be? I was so happy with this dress I haven't planned anything else...

Yes, I know I just have to put it on and see, but humour me?

You sound very dramatic.Ask Ru Paul and the girls. I bet they know all the tricks of tight fitting clothes.

Sunshineo · 10/12/2025 19:30

Try it and see. Much easier than strangers arguing over how much difference 5lbs makes and suggesting things that won’t work with your dress.

NerdyBird · 10/12/2025 19:30

You can get thong shapewear, shouldn’t be difficult. Or sew up the split slightly so you’re covering up the shapewear if you can’t get thong stuff.

A Spanx thong sounds like cruel and unusual punishment. It’s making me wince just to think about!

Go get the dress on and post a stealth boast photo here WinkGrin (if you’re going to wear heels when you wear it, don’t forget to try it on wearing them iyswim as I always found that made a difference to posture etc)

Jetandianto · 10/12/2025 19:52

I would suggest in investing in some shapewear

I’m going to say it - Ru Paul and the girls, must be men surely? I imagine the logistics of thongs etc would be different, possibly even more painful!

Why are you asking us? Just put the dress on!

Hurtandupsetmummy · 10/12/2025 21:08

Put the dress on, blur your head and then you might get opinions!! But it's MN so they might not be nice!!

My advice is put the dress on, look at yourself and make your own decision!
Or do what i do...if if feels right and I feel okay, go with it!! Xxxx

Blueytwo · 10/12/2025 21:27

Easy. Try it on. If you feel instant good, wear it. If you have any doubt suck it up and buy something else

Perhaps you are justifying buying a new Christmas dress and I don't blame you. It is the sort of excuse I would make.

If you think it doesn't fit as well, then you will not enjoy your parties, the whole reason to party.

Treat yourself to a new one. Most of us do at Christmas.

I've got a pair of unbranded spanx -like pants that are a thong so no VPL. Hideously unattractive when I take my dress off but fantastic underneath. I got them from m&s

I just want to say that I love your username 😆 that’s all I’ve got.

I weigh 3 or 4lb more in the evening than the morning. If you weigh yourself every day or every other day at the same time in the morning your weight can fluctuate by a few pounds in a few days. Don't worry about 5lbs, but if it really makes a difference in the dress then just eat more lightly and drink plenty of water for a couple of days before you wear it.

Do you exercise? I was ten stone or less and 5'7" in my 20s and would never of dreamed of wearing shapewear. I never wear it now either at eleven stone aged 50 as I have good muscle tone and wear things that fit properly and are cut properly.

Lidre · 10/12/2025 09:32

But then you get vpl

Ive had them from all over, M&S, Spanx, Next etc. Can get seamless ones that are high lieg and dont show through

Yes, I'm very fit and strong. I won an category race last night. The issue is probably that the dress is made for someone 30 years younger and isn't particularly good quality or well cut, but it is a good dress for its purpose.

From Jane Norman, remember them? 🤣

Did you try it on? I bet it looks exactly the same! 5lbs won't show unless its all gone on one area. I'm 5'9 and seem to gain/lose over half a stone without it affecting the fit of clothes.
Hope you have a fab time!

Lidre · 11/12/2025 23:55

I did try it on. I think I look a bit curvier on the tummy, but it's Ok, as long as I stand up straight 🤣

Nobody else will notice that...I'm certain!

I came here to see a pic of you wearing it! Come on OP, indulge us!

I’ve put on about 2kg, but also much more muscle, I’m thinner by a notable amount. You don’t need to be bigger
