I would just clean it myself.

JeRevien · 07/12/2025 14:56

Thing is, everyone has different standards of cleaning, don’t they. So if you said that to me I’d probably give it a wipe around with a damp cloth, but I expect you’re probably meaning some kind of deep clean thing. In which case I would think you were being ridiculous.

Pancakeflipper · 07/12/2025 14:57

No sorry. Until the house is actually yours and you are in the house, don't think you can ask for the oven to be cleaned.

TBH I've never inspected inside an oven when I've been house looking.

AngelaTheBaker · 07/12/2025 14:57

Yes that would be ridiculous. Get an oven cleaning company in once you own the house if you don't want to do it yourself

HardworkSendHelp · 07/12/2025 14:57

i honestly don’t think it would be unreasonable to ask. Had friends buy a very very expensive house and they had to stall the moving people so that the place could be cleaned. Some people have no shame.

Helpfullright · 07/12/2025 14:58

Haha! I would be telling you where to go!

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 07/12/2025 14:58

Will they be definitely leaving the oven behind when they move?

I think you should just budget to get it professionally cleaned after you move in, in personally.

AwkwardPaws27 · 07/12/2025 14:58

Unfortunately there's no obligation for anything to be left clean. I'd budget for an ovwn clean and probably a deep clean of the rest of the house when you move in.
Our house was pretty filthy when when we moved in, and there was a wheelie bin full of dog shit in the garden (our council don't empty wheelie bins so that was fun to empty!).

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/12/2025 15:01

Our son has just moved into his first house. The sellers signed a legal document, undertaking to leave the house in clean and tidy condition.

It was filthy, burned on grease and solid fat in oven trays, dirty microwave, fridge, freezer with bits of food in it, two full bins in a cupboard under the sink. They hadn’t even cleaned the loo. Looked like nothing had been done since his offer was accepted.

Unfortunately, some people are just disgusting.

CosyFanTucci · 07/12/2025 15:03

If I was renting, yes. If I was buying, no.

fluffiphlox · 07/12/2025 15:05

Get a man in when the house is yours. Best £60 you’ll spend.

stichguru · 07/12/2025 15:09

Nope - the sellers have no obligation to leave the place clean. I think to try to get someone to do something they don't want to do and don't need to do, would be more hassle than doing it yourself. Plus even if they looked like they'd done it, they are hardly likely to do it that well if they don't want to and don't have to!

Twonow · 07/12/2025 15:11

Can you post a pic?

i would outsource

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 07/12/2025 15:11

Really.
So you're one of these people with no shame, who leave their houses filthy for the next unfortunate occupant.
Nice.

Twonow · 07/12/2025 15:11

CosyFanTucci · 07/12/2025 15:03

If I was renting, yes. If I was buying, no.

Well if I was renting I would reasonably ask LL for it to be cleaned

Quite a few of them about. Arseholes.

climbintheback · 07/12/2025 15:12

I would make sure my oven was clean when I sell

PlazaAthenee · 07/12/2025 15:13

Just get an oven clean booked in as soon as you get a completion date.
I wouldn't trust them to clean it properly anyway.

LividArse · 07/12/2025 15:14

The oven I moved in to was so dirty I didn't risk even turning the hob on.

I bought a new oven. Even cleaning in the gap while it was being replaced felt like it could be giving me hepatitis or rabies or similar.

That was the least of the things that went wrong in the move, but legally, no, it doesn't have to be cleaned. You might expect and you could even ask but you have no legal recourse to clean. (Ask me how I know...)

Pavementworrier · 07/12/2025 15:15

You can ask but they can lol and say do one

Elektra1 · 07/12/2025 15:38

I moved house recently, selling one and buying another. I cleaned the oven in my old house to as-new standard, and found the oven in my new house absolutely encrusted with grease and dirt. So I cleaned that too. I think asking for the oven to be cleaned in a house you’re buying risks offending the sellers in a way which may derail the transaction, so if you can’t face cleaning it yourself, just factor in £60 to the costs of purchase and get one of those companies round to do it for you.

Such a strange attitude. We’ve sold several houses, always left them spotless. Why would we want to spoil the new owners’ moving in day. That’s just a shitty thing to do.

KruelladeVille23 · 07/12/2025 16:05

England is the only country I have lived in where one set of owners move out and the new people move in on the same day. In most countries the new owners will rent for a couple of months (or more) while the new home is renovated: painted, new bathrooms, kitchens etc. Then professional cleaners come in before they move in.

Completely bonkers to expect those moving out to do any more than a quick whizz round with the vacuum cleaner!

Growlybear83 · 07/12/2025 16:07

I wouldn’t expect to have to ask - I’m in the process of moving and just assumed that a really thorough clean is part of the process. I’ve already had my oven cleaned and will be arranging for cleaners to come in the day we move.

Buscobel · 07/12/2025 16:09

We had to throw out one oven because it was impossible to resurrect. My daughter had to bin all the carpets and the dishwasher, which had been left full of scummy water.
