We scrubbed and hoovered our old house , got pro oven cleaners in , and left instructions for the boiler .

Walked into our new house, looked in dismay at 3 months worth of flies on every surface , opened the oven door , gagged at the food left in it, and went to the pub . Threw the oven out the next day and bought most of the cleaning aisle . Horrendous .

Unless it's a fancy range, ovens aren't that expensive.

I think it’s weird to have any expectations on a house you’re buying

Get a man in when the house is yours. Best £60 you’ll spend.

My last oven cleaning guy was a 6'6" biker with massive biceps - the oven was scrubbed to within an inch of its life! Brilliant 🙂

Larymarylary · 07/12/2025 20:55

I’d have a new oven.

ADHDdiagnosis · 07/12/2025 20:56

I can’t imagine buying a house and keeping someone else’s oven! Seems so strange to me. But sadly I’ve never bought a house. However now I’m thinking about it I’ll definitely be buying my own oven. Or bringing my current one with me.

TwotierChristmas · 07/12/2025 20:58

No there is no way I would clean an oven and I would not expect it done for me buying a new house.

On buying any new house I would expect to clean the entire thing with a deep clean x 3.

I would replace it. And the fridge / freezer. The cost of a new oven etc is hardly anything In the grand scheme of buying a house. And I’d pay for a full deep clean of the whole house. I’d suck up the cost and stop worrying about it.

Exactly this. I wouldn’t keep someone else’s kitchen appliances. Or washing machines etc unless brand new washing machine

Really. If a house has a beautiful kitchen: Miele or ILVE/LaCanche ovens/cookers, etc. You'd rip them put and replace?

SL2924 · 07/12/2025 21:36

If they didn’t clean it for themselves I doubt they’d clean it for you.

I once moved into a rented house with a very fancy oven that had a self cleaning function. I turned it on and went to let the dogs out in the garden for 10 minutes and when I came back the entire house was full of smoke.

I tried it again after cleaning it manually and it was only half as bad but I just ignored it after that. Was it just a crap self clean? Should I give them another shot?

I hate cleaning the oven, I don’t like wearing full hazmat gear to clean.

I would say it had a lot of food crap to be burnt off hence the smoke

DaisyChain505 · 09/12/2025 10:06

If you really want the house I wouldn’t be nut picking at something like this. Hire someone for £60 when you move in.

Stopbringingmicehome · 09/12/2025 10:08

Get Elton John in, he's posted videos of his oven cleaning skills

I agree and that’s why I tried it again after scrubbing but it was still really smoky! Maybe it was just too far gone.

Makingadecision · 09/12/2025 18:30

Just get it cleaned when you move in. You’re at the mercy of your sellers. They could leave a lot of grime.

Scrape what you can, then try again

maddiemookins16mum · 09/12/2025 18:54

When we moved in there was still a foil lined baking sheet in the oven, with an abandoned fish finger on it looking all forlorn and forgotten.

ThePoshUns · 09/12/2025 20:17

We moved into our house the oven was filthy and the grill pan had foil and about a centimetre thick fat in it. When I cleaned it the door fell off and smashed so we had to buy a new one. If I were to move again, I’d be thinking to buy a new one. Bonus if I don’t.
