I try to keep away from plug In due to the health risks but not sure how else to have a nice smelling home. Already open windows regularly etc. we have candles and diffusers but unless they are everywhere , the string isn’t very strong. any tips?

Wash soft furnishings regularly, especially if animals in the house.

Chazbots · 06/12/2025 11:16

My favourite ever tenant had the best smelling house. I was cleaning somewhere minging & actually msged her to get some tips.

So she was (properly dx) ocd so did a lot of cleaning but her top tip was Zoflora sprinkled on the radiators.

Candles are equally bad for indoor air quality. Just been cleaning a house where candles had been used heavily, to counteract dog smell & every surface had a layer of soot.

What health risks?

I do know that the British Lung Foundation advises against use of candles and open fires.

Whilst this will make your home smell lovely I think zoflora is flammable.

I assume it was a little dribble.

Her house always smelt amazing and she had dogs and other pets usually.

TheSandgroper · 06/12/2025 16:00

I would ditch the candles and diffusers. Too much of all that is worse than nothing.

A clean house - vac and mop weekly if you’re don’t have dogs (more often if you do). Wash throws etc regularly, open all your windows every day. Walk around the whole house from top to bottom and open every door and every window for a proper clear out. Then walk back to where you started and start closing up again. I put towels, pillows and blankets outside often if it’s a dry, breezy day. Even an hour out makes everything smell good. Putting coats out would be good, too. Turn them inside out.

If you get rid of all the smellies except for soap in the bathroom and just kept everything clean, you would be surprised how good your house actually smells.

TheSandgroper · 06/12/2025 16:03

I would also point out that you do become inured to your own smells. You might not smell your candles and diffusers but visitors probably smell them all quite strongly.

If your house is clean etc, it’s a matter of knowing that your house smells fine rather than actually smelling it yourself.

But do you think that Zoflora is better to breath in than candles or plug ins?
To me it’s all chemically based.

Sortalike · 06/12/2025 16:30

I flit between Method cleaners and Zoflora cleaners, they do smell lovely, I'm using frosted berries Zoflora at the minute and the house smells very festive.

Windows open in the bedrooms and bathrooms, kitchen and lounge for at least 30 mins a day,

MartinCrieffsHat · 06/12/2025 16:35

Make sure the house is clean and has been aired. I think it's dust that's smelly.
Clean corners and under things. Shake cushions and throws.
Things like diffusers and chemicals smell but do not smell good.

Everything is chemicals. I just open my windows and clean my bin regularly, makes a massive difference.

aniloD · 06/12/2025 16:53

I use pure essential oils, dribbled onto fabric flowers and on cloths (not clothes) in the shoe cupboard and coat racks. I have a few different ones so I can vary the scent and still notice it myself

MartinCrieffsHat · 06/12/2025 16:56

I don't understand why people let their bins get full and smelly. I don't like seeing half filled waste-paper baskets.
Waste is split into Bin, Recycling, & Compostable here, and the actual bin is emptied regularly. Only a small amount goes in it.

InLoveWithAI · 06/12/2025 16:59

Sand and fog candles. They are available in TKMAXX.

EVERYBODY who comes to my house says it smells amazing, and this is why.

I like teakwood and Tahitian vanilla.

Pistachiocake · 06/12/2025 17:02

Coffee filter
Certain diffusers/candlest (I know you want to stay away from some types)
Tallow and Ash fabric spray
Cooking things like oranges on a low heat-can use to decorate after
Studding oranges with cloves (you could get the kids to put words like Joy, Santa, whatever you want on them)
Those sticks to scent the tree-I like cinnamon
Making cinnamon biscuits

I agree with you , imo there is nothing worse than all the artificial smells so many people seem to love.
They all compete with each other even if they are not on at the same time, that Verry Berry candle you had burning last night is now competing with the vanilla reed defuser that's just been set up.

If you don't have any outside space hang throws / coats / pillows on the curtan rail with the window's open or use a clothes horse and put them by the front / back door .

If your window's have vents on them keep them open all of the time.

Most modern window's have a locking system that keeps the window very slightly open ( I don't mean the child lock type) .
Look in the window frame to see if yours does , you can keep them open but safe .
The locking mechanism looks like this , and this is the window locked 'open' ( photo will appear soon )

Empty your vac and wash its fillters regularly .add a teaspoon of bicarb to the new bag / tank .

Ask someone that you know will be brutally honest what your house smells like.

You think a sprinkle of zoflora over your radiators are going to blow your house up? How hot do your radiators get?

Middlemarch123 · 06/12/2025 18:17

Keep it clean, open windows and let fresh air in every room regardless of the weather. Don’t mask nasty smells with fake smells, it’s a hiding to nothing.

Puglife1234 · 06/12/2025 18:22

What’s the most powerful smelling thing essential oil. I want something that smells nice without the toxins.

VeggiJ · 06/12/2025 18:24

Great eco and natural way I use is making a simmer pot.
add things like used orange peels, old lemons, apples that are getting abit past their best, herbs, cinnamon sticks and other spices. Add your chosen bits to a pan of water and let it simmer away. Check that’s there’s still enough water and turn on when needed.
I usually keep mine a couple of days, I take out anything that’s starting to look mushy and change the water, then make a new one with what I have on hand.
:)

That sounds good try thanks.

Lemongrass essential oil is what they use in spas!

Whatwouldnanado · 06/12/2025 18:39

Neroli, eucalyptus, lemon essential oil on cotton wool tucked into the radiator plus the regular cleaning, airing described above.
