I try to keep away from plug In due to the health risks but not sure how else to have a nice smelling home. Already open windows regularly etc. we have candles and diffusers but unless they are everywhere , the string isn’t very strong. any tips?

My favourite ever tenant had the best smelling house. I was cleaning somewhere minging & actually msged her to get some tips.

So she was (properly dx) ocd so did a lot of cleaning but her top tip was Zoflora sprinkled on the radiators.

Candles are equally bad for indoor air quality. Just been cleaning a house where candles had been used heavily, to counteract dog smell & every surface had a layer of soot.

Zoflora is terrible for the environment and air quality too.

I make an Essential oil spray. In a bottle place a cap of vodka of other spirit (anti mould) fill with water, add 20 drops of any essential oils. I also add essential oils to my spray mop.

I bought a huge bunch of eucalyptus today to decorate the house - just in vases with a bit of bay from the garden and some trimmings from the Christmas tree. It smells lovely.

i love the method clove wood cleaner and also bees wax for furniture.

As well as cleaning soft furnishings regularly as others have said, I have been putting a drop of essential oil on a cotton wool pad or tissue and putting inside cushion covers and under sofa cushions.

Anyone that has a dog or cat, their house smells.

The White Company Winter candle is incredible.

Saw on TikTok someone putting those bathroom air fresheners all around the house hidden like behind the sofa, tv unit etc

It really doesn’t
my cat doesn’t go outside so he’s never wet or muddy, he smells vaguely of my perfume if I sniff him. Cats aren’t generally smelly

but you have to keep on top of cleaning and litter trays etc
I have had people walk in then be surprised when my cat appears

I love the smell of hairdressers, I want my house to smell like that ❤️

Staybymw · 06/12/2025 21:47

The other day I vacuumed over an old orange peel in my kids bedroom and it smelt amazing. The vacuum brushes must’ve crushed it up. It was like a natural Shake n Vac.

Reed diffusers from Rituals (Hammam is my favourite) and wax melts. I air my house daily, wash my throws often and everyone always comments how nice my house smells. I have a cockapoo and he doesn’t smell at all- in fact DDs friends say he smells like biscuits!! He’s on a raw fed diet and gets his teeth brushed daily

A pan of water with a drop or two of orange oil, a cinnamon stick, couple of cloves makes the house smell lovely and Christmassy

tryingtomakesenseof · 07/12/2025 09:34

Thanks all! I’ll just keep going with airing the house and keeping it clean and tidy!

Almost everyone that enters my home comments on how lovely it always smells. I get a little bit of concentrated fabric softener on a clean washing up pad, run it over the tops of all the radiators, leave the pad behind the big one in the lounge and then whack the heating up.

Great eco and natural way I use is making a simmer pot.
add things like used orange peels, old lemons, apples that are getting abit past their best, herbs, cinnamon sticks and other spices. Add your chosen bits to a pan of water and let it simmer away. Check that’s there’s still enough water and turn on when needed.
I usually keep mine a couple of days, I take out anything that’s starting to look mushy and change the water, then make a new one with what I have on hand.
:)

This works ok but creates steam which isn't great in a small house or else I forget it's on... burn it dry, stink the house out with burning and ruin my pans ....but perhaps you're better adults than me 🙈

Raw diet & daily tooth brushing for the dogs here too plus wash their beds.

You can put essential oil on a tissue and shred it. Then if you vacuum it up, it smells nice as you go.

@Vax - my house doesn’t smell of cat. We have only wood and tile flooring due to allergies, and clean daily. We open windows every day, have air purifiers and no litter tray. Our cat is indoors more in winter but outside a lot. He has a cat bed he actually uses and it’s washed often
