GCSE maths as an adult

Any ideas how I can do GCSE maths on line ..or the equivalent
But also sit the exam on line ..
Everything I've looked at I have to go to an exam centre to sit the exam
Is there anything where I can do the whole qualification at home

I wouldn't have thought so as otherwise you could cheat?

Not a gcse, but you should be able to do Functional Skills Numeracy level 2 equivalent. If you do not have a Maths Level 2 it is free via government funded providers. Your local FE college should be able to signpost you if they cannot offer it. The assessment may still be in person though.

I expect you will have to sit the exam at a centre. If you have a disability that makes it impossible to go to one, home invigilation might be possible. I know it is done for Open University exams, as one of my family was a home invigilator, but not sure about GCSEs.

I agree with the others. You won't be able to sit GCSE Maths at home.

However the Level 2 Functional Skills maths may well be possible from home (we had difficulty finding somewhere to sit it in person!)

Thankyou
Did you sit it at home in the end

You would have to sit the exam in an exam centre.

I'm an invigilator and have sat my Maths GCSE (passed with a B) when I was 41.

However if in the hall, you are put at the back and can enter earlier and leave later - the exam time remains the same.

You cannot do the exam from home online.

Luckily DD passed her maths GCSE resit so we avoided having to do FS in the end (which as I say was lucky as I couldn't find anywhere for her to do it in person).

Elisheva · 05/12/2025 12:56

You can do Functional skills at home, but you have to have remote invigilation so would need a webcam etc.

Is this standard practice or something people have to push for

You would need an actual paper to sign - it's a legal document - and there's three papers to sit regardless of Foundation or Higher if doing GCSE maths. 2 calculator and one non-calculator.

it seems to be pretty standard to do the FS at home from my previous research.
FS also had the advantage that you can sit it 'whenever' instead of having to do fixed dates in November or June.

FS Maths seems to be a bit more 'wordy' than GCSE Maths and doesn't have the more esoteric topics such as algebra. The FS I looked at had two sections sat consecutively of non calculator and calculator maths totalling iirc 2hrs, whereas the GCSE has 3 separate papers each of 1.5hrs (details vary according to board).

If you just need the Level 2 as opposed to specifically the GCSE, then the FS may well be easier to achieve (unless dyslexic or can't cope with working on computers).

Pinkchristmastree1 · 05/12/2025 13:05

I wonder if the open university have anything

Ok thanks ..I'd need to be 100% sure I could sit any exams on line before I pay .

If you don't have a level 2 in maths already you should be able to do it for free, so don't start paying without investigating this first.

How much does it cost, if you don't mind me asking?

Leftleg · 05/12/2025 13:12

Your local college should have GCSE courses and you can often study remotely. It's free if you didn't pass first time.
I recently retook my maths GCSE and learnt most of the content on mathswatch, although my course wasn't fully online and had to attend college one evening a week.
The exam would definitely have to be done in an exam centre, I'm not sure of any where the exam can be taken at home.

The exam can be taken at home if the person sitting asks for it - disabled for example and you would have to have proof. Always do it sooner rather than later.

Even at home if it's GCSE, an invigilator would have to be present - I've done many home exams.

I have caring responsibilities,I can't get out to attend college in the evening or day time

Could you arrange alternative care for a couple of hours to take the paper?

blackheartsgirl · 05/12/2025 13:24

I’m currently doing FS Level 2 one day a week at college but my local college has outreaches and ones in my village luckily. It’s free

I still have to take the exam in the main college but I can take it whenever I’m ready.

Im not sure about home study, might be worth contacting local college etc to find out

LIZS · 05/12/2025 13:19

Maybe ..yes .
But ..
I walked out of a lot of my exams as a teenager, because I couldn't cope .
I've since been diagnosed with autism, and dyslexia and waiting for ADHD asessment.
So if I'm totally honest..it's more me feeling I can't cope with the exam situation just as much as caring responsibilities

I thought there would be a way, as an adult ,I could get a qualification without the exam hall situation
