Has anyone/anyone’s DC got a Meta Quest?

What’s it really like beyond the advert? I don’t know anyone with one to try it out. Is it worth the £££?

We have one and it is AWESOME. I’m not a gamer but my teens are, and they fight for who goes on it. I however use it for what they rudely call “ladymum” stuff. I watch films - it’s like being at the cinema! I visit museums, I do visualisations, courses, that sort of thing. Do it. Get one.

WildUnknown · 04/12/2025 20:23

Yes I’m interested in the visiting places aspect. I’m strongly considering it for Christmas/New Year. What do you mean by visualisations and what sort of courses ?

There are some lovely sort of hypnotising calmness apps where you’re swishing through space or lovely colours and lights and calm voices telling you when to breathe. I have a painting app which I like too, plus you can use it for ordinary browsing except it’s on a massive scale. Films and telly are brilliant though. The quality of the apps and games is improving exponentially too.

Interpink · 04/12/2025 20:29

I love the historic apps too - one of the first ones we got was Anne Frank’s house which you can walk all around. As I say, I’m not a gamer but I love it! I wish there was more ladymum stuff.

WildUnknown · 04/12/2025 20:36

I’m finding it hard to understand painting and drawing on it

I had one. It's awesome. You've got to have top notch wifi though to cope with it. I used to play Resident Evil on it and scare the living bejesus out of myself!

Interpink · 04/12/2025 20:41

Haven’t you had a go of one yet? Omg it’ll blow your mind.

One of my sons has a sort of virtual 3D printer which he did all his DT homework on - he uses the hand gestures rather than the controllers to pull up the various elements and stick them together.

There are quite a lot of creative apps - imagine you’re holding a virtual brush on a huge canvas - away you go!

The education apps are interesting too - I tripped over one where it was teaching social skills in local government (quite niche) and was all about how to interject politely and manage team activities.

Interpink · 04/12/2025 20:42

V true about the internet speed thing. We have enough bandwidth to run NASA.

WildUnknown · 04/12/2025 20:43

Shoot.

I’m always swearing at the Wifi!

Nope. I’m really intrigued though.

Yes, 2 of my kids have them and use them regularly. If you get one Just be careful to tell them if you are walking within swinging distance when they're playing golf or boxing 🥊

WildUnknown · 04/12/2025 20:47

Like an advanced version of the old Wii?

I have the 3 and the 3s. The 3 is better lenses wise. Get the biggest memory you can because you can't add any later. Switch off automatic updates..some updates need tweaking so it's best to wait.

Get a comfort strap with extra battery(s). The strap it comes with is crap.

The lenses are coated with a special stuff that will scratch if you look at them wrong. Use a proper soft cloth to clean and buy inserts to put in when not in use. Keep out of direct sunlight at all costs.

Other than that the world's your oyster. There's a shit load of stuff that can be done on them. More if you have a PC.

It's the only machine that has games that scare me that much, I have to turn it off. Very impressed with it. But it's more than just games.

VR can have a detrimental affect on children younger than 10yrs of age.

Meta Quest is not recommended for young children due to potential negative impacts on physical and cognitive development, with concerns including eye strain from improper fit, musculoskeletal strain from a heavy headset, and potential difficulties distinguishing virtual from reality. While Meta has lowered the minimum age for parent-managed accounts to 10, it's recommended that parents carefully consider a child's readiness and supervise them closely if they allow them to use a headset.

I bought Metaquest 2 three years ago. Have hardly used it as it makes me extremely nauseous. Just thinking about it now makes me feel queasy. I suffer from travel sickness and its a similar concept. I need to sell it really. I could only manage 20 min sessions on it and had to have a fan on me and drink copious amounts of cold water to stop me chucking up 😁

WildUnknown · 04/12/2025 20:51

games that scare me

THAT realistic? I’ll avoid Resident Evil then, not my speed! I would like to participate in SOME of the Gaming but I don’t know what would be my speed.

Thanks @HangryBrickSharkbut not a worry here, thankfully!

Gosh about the motion sickness! Worth considering!

Stuff like resident evil, paradise hotel and metro are a bit nerve wracking. Ghost town is excellent, not scary, immersive and full of puzzles. It's quite short though.

The Arizona sunshines are excellent, jumpy but you get hooked quite quickly. Me and a friend do escape rooms. The seventh guest very well made. I was a bit sad when it finished.

But start with the rollercoaster. It's free and it helps you get your VR legs. It can make you feel a bit queasy at first.

WildUnknown · 04/12/2025 20:59

Omg @gamerchick! I had 7th guest on PC many moons ago! Do you know if its the same? Do they have any games where you build a theme park or similar, I like that sort of thing

OP posts:
gamerchick · 04/12/2025 21:01

I think it's a modern version of the original game. There is plenty of review videos if you want a look.

I don't know about building theme parks or anything. But it's something you can research if you're thinking about it.

WildUnknown · 04/12/2025 21:03

I’m definitely researching - thank you

OP posts:
WildUnknown · 04/12/2025 21:06

I suppose the thing is, you don’t really know if it will suit all needs/purposes until you actually try and bite the bullet as it’s not possible to trial

SwallowsandAmazonians · 04/12/2025 21:08

There's a thing called Wander which is Google earth in 3D, you can go anywhere.

I use the quest for boxing and combat workouts on FitVR. And some games but I'm not a big gamer. I played one called Moss which was great but would never put myself through anything scary in 3D!

Interpink · 04/12/2025 21:32

We have Moss! I can cope with that, it’s a very cute mouse!

OP it’s a million miles better than Wii. The PP who said about the battery pack is right.

we had the very early VR thing about 7 years ago, the meta is tons and tons better but also my kids are strapping teens too so I’m not worried developmentally too much. I have all the usual filters on the WIFI so there’s no sneaky watching nudey stuff.

Interpink · 04/12/2025 21:33

I sat in bed with a bottle of wine and watched Sex and the City and somehow I managed to hit record and the kids said that they saw I’d recorded myself having a swig of Prosecco and giggling! Aura loss!

WildUnknown · 04/12/2025 21:59

LOL!
