Is this acceptable to wear to an Indian wedding?

I’m going to an Indian wedding in Thailand next year for one of my friends. I’m also going to be a bridesmaid. I have a light pink dress (Indian style too) for that. But I also found this dress on Vinted and bought it for one of the ceremonies and evening events (it’s a 7 day event). Looking at it now, the dress is a lot more purple than I expected and much sparklier so I’m worried it’s too much. Any opinions? Thank you!

It looks lovely on you.

Sorry I have zero experience or knowledge about Indian weddings but I think the dress is beautiful OP!

Pollqueen · 04/12/2025 19:14

It's absolutely lovely and looks great on you. From experience, no bling is too much at an Indian wedding. Is it Sikh or Hindu?

There is no such thing as "too much" at an Indian wedding.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 04/12/2025 19:16

What a lovely figure you have! It looks great on you.

I have no knowledge of Indian weddings, though. Perhaps try the Style and Beauty page? Or the South Asian page? Or ask your friend!

Is it alright to show your tummy?

CalmShaker · 04/12/2025 19:21

Perfect choice, Very smart 👌 may I ask, is that a Morphy Richards kettle?

HorribleHisTories15 · 04/12/2025 19:22

It looks fab on you. Just check discreetly if you are allowed to show your tummy or shoulders, just out of respect.

Hindu/Sikh wedding definitely. Muslim, probably not

Looks good. Do try and gather girlfriends and go for a day trip to a town or city with sari shops in. Get some lovely jhumka jewellery - shein have some! Big bell style earrings.

You might want to ask for help from the family in tying your sari if you get a wrap one. I'd go all out! You can get lovely stuff off vinted or facebook, definitely worth it. A red or jewelled green would look nice with your skintone.

I went to an Indian wedding (in the UK) a few years ago. There's no such thing as too sparkly or too much bling there. All the women were blinged up to the nines. That sari looks gorgeous btw.

It's not a sari, is it?

Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits · 04/12/2025 19:50

What material is it?

Material matters more than it does in Western fashion.
Can't see the material clear enough on the photo but it does look a bit cheap.

Very few adult women would wear lengha (skirt+top+scarf) unless it was their bridal outfit (often reworn as a guest at future weddings). I think it will stand out as obviously touristy if the majority of guests are Indian. But if it's a pretty mixed crowd it'll be fine.

If you want to look "native", I'd go for an Anarkali (dress style salwar kamese) or Sari (maybe a sari dress which is pre-stitched).

I'm Indian - in terms of bling and sparkle etc it's not too much at all and you have a lovely figure BUT, and I mean this kindly, I'm sorry to say it's a very dated looking Indian outfit. The colour, the embellishments, the shape of the skirt. If I could give an British comparison, it's basically the vibe of a Lipsy/Quiz/Select bandage dress with sequins circa 2012. I'm guessing your friend is fairly well off for this wedding to be in Thailand and unfortunately this outfit looks very cheap.

Also you wouldn't wear the scarf on your head like that for any of the events, it would be draped around your shoulders in a certain way.

If you want a lengha then these days a typical silhouette is a fitted crop top blouse with a full skirt, not a fishtail style. And some nicer fabrics. Have a look at websites like Mongas, Lashkara but tbh it's hard to find good quality Indian outfits online unless you know exactly where to look. Where in the UK are you as I could suggest a few places to go in person.

Could you ask your friend for advice as well?

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 04/12/2025 20:12

You look fantastic.

Mydadsbirthday · 04/12/2025 20:27

It's fine but definitely don't wear the scarf on your head like that - it can be draped over one shoulder or worn like a shawl, or across your neck flowing behind you, depending on the material.

Thank you, I wasn’t sure how to wear it.

I couldn’t afford an expensive dress unfortunately. If it looks cheap that’s even better for me because I was worried it would be too blingy and don’t care to stand out. My friend is well off and knows I am definetly not so I don’t think she cares what I wear as long as I show up. Thank you!

And you will look great by the way - I think @Thesummer is being a little sneery. It's not the most on trend outfit but it really really does not matter. It looks nice on you and it's lovely that you're making this effort for your friends. frankly I love seeing non Indian people dressing up for Indian weddings - the effort is always appreciated and everyone always looks great and enjoys dressing up. Have a great time!

This.

Also it's perfect, looks fab on you and you'll fit in perfectly x

And I agree with @Mydadsbirthday

I'm Indian by background too and it will look lovely from the pure fact of how much effort you've put in x

Thesummer · 05/12/2025 10:02

I genuinely wasn't being sneery. Totally appreciate not being able to afford expensive outfits but I think you could get better things on Vinted x
