Have you ever done an extreme day trip?

Just that really.

I've seen a few things on insta recently and I'm considering making it a new year resolution - 6 extreme day trips next year.

I was particularly inspired by a couple who went on an extreme day trip skiing in Geneva - I love skiing but get put off by the cost for a family and I think a day trip for DH and I would work really well!

If you've done one, would you recommend?

Why is it worse for the environment to fly there and back in a day than to stay for a week? Is it the assumption they'll be doing many more day trips than longer trips?

I would assume that the flights are in addition to those they'd normally be taking for a holiday / business / to visit family, yes. 100% fair enough if people decide to just fly for one extreme day trip a year, for example if they have pets or care for relatives who can't be left, but I have never come across anyone who uses it in this way. They tend to look for cheap flights at either end of the day and do it because, well, why not? We should all be reducing how much we fly for any reason imo. One flight can easily outweigh a year's worth of other efforts such as going vegan.

For me the cost benefit analysis just doesn't stack up, but you (not you, but everyone) do you.

I've done Glasgow to London, and Leeds, and Liverpool, and Lytham.
I haven't done abroad yet.

I did know someone who did Vienna in a day........by Concorde, pretty hard to beat i think!

I went to Belgium for the day when I was 14...

Oh I'd forgotten that I went to the Belgian Grands Prix for the day in 2005.

Kind of. We arrived in Canada on Work Permits and needed to leave the country and return in order to activate our Permanent Residence, once it had been granted.

So we flew to San Francisco, spent a day there and flew back to Canada the next morning.

We had to do the same. Took the Coho to port Angeles. Round the flag and back on the boat.

I’ve done Belfast, Edinburgh and Glasgow for work in a day, many times. I have also done Rome as an overnight, does that count?

Saw one online who did a day trip to America, went around Central Park etc.

i saw that one. He took the first flight out of Heathrow to NYC which arrived at 11am (helped by the time difference, of course) and the last flight out which is an overnight flight leaving around 11pm.

He did Times Square, Rockefeller tree, Central Park, a rooftop bar and tried some viral NYC Christmas market food (which is overrated). He was also lucky and caught the snow we got here a couple of weeks ago so Central Park was extra picturesque.

That one was actually an impressive extreme day trip, and makes sense because hotel prices in NYC this time of year are eye-watering.

I did a couple in Egypt, one was a 21 hour epic by plane to Cairo the other a 3.5 hour coach trip to Luxor.
I went to Cape Town for three nights and Barbados for four.

As above but also if you stay for a week you put money into the local economy and actually get to see more than 2 things, maybe try new foods, get a feel for the actual culture rather than just a few insta snaps to make you look rich and cosmopolitan when your real friends know you don't speak another language, eat anything that isn't fish and chips and probably spent the day in an English pub. For example. These seem to be the only people I know who do this anyway...

Pedallleur · 01/01/2026 18:48

That NY posted above is crazy but these flights are going anyway empty or full. It's only after a few months will airlines cancel the flights if costs outweigh the return. I wouldn't fly to NY for the day (Concorde yes) but the flight still goes.

I’ve done quite a few day trips for sporting events when annual leave has been tight. All within Europe with the furthest being Moscow.

I’ve done even more 2/3 day trips for events. Literally 100+ over the years.

Just looked at MCR - Venice in Feb. Could do it on a day but a first flight out on Saturday and last flight on Sunday would be < 50 pounds

FairyBatman · 01/01/2026 19:23

Yes flew to Disneyland Paris for the day with DS. Flight out at 6:00 am with DS in his PJs half asleep. TGV to Disneyland. Day in the parks, TGV back to the airport and flight home at 9:30.

Got to the airport 1 hour before on the way out and 90 minutes on the way back but used that time to eat.

What a ridiculous post. I don’t do EDTs but I don’t pretend that the only people who do them just go somewhere for the day to sit in a pub and eat fish and chips. What a nonsense. No one who is getting up at 3am and flying to Venice or Vienna for the day is doing it to sit in an Irish pub watching a football game and eating English food. You can tell yourself that to make yourself feel superior all you want, but you’re completely wrong.

WhineAndWine1 · 01/01/2026 20:32

@Silverbirchleaf i have spent the day looking at how I can make this work from where I am. I’m looking at a two day trip sadly

My day trip wont be any different than me going for a week. Except I dont.

I believe the idea is to cram more travel in though (see poster aiming for 6 of these this year)
