Have you ever done an extreme day trip?

Just that really.

I've seen a few things on insta recently and I'm considering making it a new year resolution - 6 extreme day trips next year.

I was particularly inspired by a couple who went on an extreme day trip skiing in Geneva - I love skiing but get put off by the cost for a family and I think a day trip for DH and I would work really well!

If you've done one, would you recommend?

Sounds a nightmare!

NessShaness · 01/12/2025 19:14

I’ve seen them but honestly can’t think of anything worse than sitting at the airport for a minimum of two hours before the flight out and the same on return journey all in one day!

If that doesn’t bother you, go for it!

LibbyL92 · 01/12/2025 19:14

Yes! I’ve done a couple.

I did the Spa in Bucharest. Flew out at 6am UK time, arrived at the Spa before midday. Spent about 5 hours in the spa, got dressed and had a lovely meal in the old town. Flight home was 11pm

also went to Wroclaw for the whole day.

was so much fun!

If it's just a day trip I can't see why I'd need to be there more than an hour before - check in online and hand luggage only?

I did it while I was in turkey, we flew to Istanbul for the day (staying in Antalya)
we were tired at the end of it but definitely worth it

scaredfriend · 01/12/2025 19:23

Not quite but I did one where I arrived at 9pm and flew out again at 4pm the next day. It was amazing. I live a little too far from an airport (2 hrs) to make a proper day trip viable without being ridiculously knackered from getting up in the middle of the night.

Tiuriwiththewhiteshield · 01/12/2025 19:23

I really don’t understand why anyone would do this. We should take the worrying state of the planet much more seriously and at least try to do our bit to help…not fly somewhere for a day.

GreenWheat · 01/12/2025 19:27

They're fine if everything goes according to plan but unravel pretty quickly if there are delays, especially on the outbound journey.

Meerkatmanor4 · 01/12/2025 19:27

No.

I only ski when it is sunny with soft fluffy snow and for a maximum of 4 hours and then I am in the spa! Have to stay at least a week to justify the effort of getting my ski stuff out of the loft never mind the rigmarole of putting it on 😂

I will climb a mountain (weather permitting) but need at least 2 days to recuperate. Travelling home would be torture!

Fair point.

Yes I did this recently!

handbags only, got to the airports about 1.5hrs before flight. Had fast track security.

7am flight to Pisa. Got there about 10am their time. Walked straight through passport control. 5 min shuttle to main train station, grabbed a coffee and pastry, walked down to the tower for a picture. Walked back (20 mins each way) grabbed a couple of cocktails. Train to Florence was 1hr. Had a lovely mooch, long lunch, some drinks, train back and flight at 10:30pm.

i do live very close to the airport my side. It was fantastic and would do again

1AnotherOne · 01/12/2025 19:36

Also to add the total price was cheaper than going to London for the day and that’s close to me too. Train usually £42(!!) return. Flight was £35.

nabanna · 01/12/2025 19:39

We've done 4-5 with a couple booked for 2026.
For us it is using the time we have available to us to see somewhere new that we can go back to for longer in the future . Before my circumstances changed (I work full time and provide overnight and weekend 24 hour care for my elderly blind parent) I travelled to Europe most months with friends which I missed before the concept of doing an Extreme day trip started to be popularised.

I know that it is bad for the planet , but flights these days tend to be full anyway,so you could squint and say that I am not increasing the overall level of emmisions by these trips

That's part of what is spinning it for me to be honest, 1 night in London, including travel down, access to attractions and food was almost £1000 in the summer, a day trip to porto would be half that!

Would never fly anywhere for a day. I am trying to avoid flying at all and will go by train if possible.

Maybeishouldcrochet · 01/12/2025 19:43

Yes- but before they were popular. Back in the days of the £0.01 Ryanair flights plus taxes. We went to Paris, Berlin, Dublin and Glasgow. Great fun
But- we also did London to Glasgow day trips in the car, and went London to Calais or bologne by train/ferry ....

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 01/12/2025 19:44

Kind of. We arrived in Canada on Work Permits and needed to leave the country and return in order to activate our Permanent Residence, once it had been granted.

So we flew to San Francisco, spent a day there and flew back to Canada the next morning.

Caspianberg · 01/12/2025 19:45

No I wouldn’t . I just don’t see the point. Your up so early to go to airport, wait, fly, that your knackered by the time you arrive

We ski. I like to be on the slope when it opens at 8.30am, the pistes are the best early, not icy, freshly bashed. By lunchtime it’s a relaxing hut for lunch. By 3pm I’m packing up car to drive home ( we live nearby). By 4pm I’m home relaxing and we are all tired. In resort you would be relaxing in a hot tub or chilling before dinner. The thought of rushing back down mountain to airport, sitting in airport all sweaty and on flight and home at 2am next morning would be awful

The thing with skiing is they are very rarely right next to airport. So you always have a bit of commute either end

Lunde · 01/12/2025 19:47

I went to Vienna for the day in 1992 - the airline was selling off excess capacity

Jilly76 · 01/12/2025 19:49

We did a package trip to Lapland in a day. It was wonderful but far too cold for the youngest (-32) airplane froze up and was delayed coming home, we were exhausted so I wouldn’t do it again with kids. We went back at 1/2 term and did 3 nights which was so much better and for probably cheaper.

dependent where you fly from, getting through security and airside is not always quick that and the gate generally closes 30 mins before departure.

I think arriving just an hour before is cutting it quite fine?

Alltheusefulitems · 01/12/2025 19:51

I went to Edinburgh for the day from Kent by train. Got the first train out of my local station into London and then kings cross to Edinburgh. I I did some sight seeing, had a lovely lunch, did some shopping and got a train home in time to catch the last train back to my house. Great adventure!

canklesmctacotits · 01/12/2025 19:57

Loads of times - for work.

Oh we did this a couple of years ago and I absolutely loved it! (But yes, slightly too cold for our youngest). I actually really enjoyed it only being a day!
