Help! Abandoned vehicle on my property

Yamahahaha · 01/12/2025 10:18

Someone has left their motorbike on my drive and I am drawing a blank in my various attempts to get rid of it. The police aren't interested as it's not stolen, the local council aren't interested as it's private property, a scrap company can't take it without authorisation, a towing company can't take it without authorisation. Etc.

Has anyone experienced this and managed to resolve it effectively?

Just get a couple of strong friends to come and carry it out onto the road and leave it there!

That may end up being the only option!

It really is your best bet. Film it being done so you have proof no damage was caused.

How long has it been there? Do you have any idea who might have left it? Do you have a ring doorbell or do others nearby so you can see?

If there's no recording in the area, I'd agree with the above, get some people to help you move it and dump it elsewhere then deny.

It's been there since Friday. No idea whose it is, and no video footage. All I know is that it is quite new and hasn't been reported stolen.

When you reported it, did they check the VIN and registration? Sometimes they put a new plate on stolen vehicles that is a copy of another different unstolen vehicle so it doesn’t flag up on ANPR.

I would push it out in to the street and leave it there.

NoodleHorses · 01/12/2025 11:02

Can you put it in neutral and just push roll it out and park it on the road? Or is the steering lock on too? If that’s the case, a couple of strong mates to lift the front end and roll it to the kerb.
How big is it? If it’s a 125cc it would be much easier than a 750cc for instance.

Yes, they checked the registration. I don't think the plates are new as they match a company name on the vehicle itself.

Where i am, if there's no plates it's classed as abandoned and the local council have to take it. Over the years we've had a neighbour out with a screw driver taking them off a few times.

I won't be able to do that myself, but may be able to round up some neighbours.

I suspect if you just put it on the street you'll be responsible for dumping it on public property.

If it's got a company name on it, have you tried contacting the company?

Yes. They can't help.

Is it possible the rider became ill, and someone put the bike on your drive? Has anyone got a ring doorbell that might cover your drive?

GasPanic · 01/12/2025 11:24

Is it obviously a private driveway?

It may be that it broke down and someone decided to park it up not realising it was on private property.

Marylou2 · 01/12/2025 11:25

If you can move it I'd put it on a double yellow line. Perhaps then it'll get shifted and a nice fine for the owner.

Doone22 · 01/12/2025 12:36

One option is to ask DVLA for a log book for it in your name and tell them you were given it without one. Which is true as it's not reported stolen. Then with logbook you can legally sell it .

Or just push it into main road and tell council it's abandoned.

Doone22 · 01/12/2025 12:40

Yamahahaha · 01/12/2025 11:17

Yes. They can't help.

So it's not their property? With their name on?

Yamahahaha · 01/12/2025 12:58

Doone22 · 01/12/2025 12:40

So it's not their property? With their name on?

No, it's just the name of the company it was purchased from.

Have you posted on local social media asking if anyone knows who the owner is?

Sneakybat · 01/12/2025 13:06

Do you live alone ? Nobody in your household has bought it for themself?

It isn't unheard of for me to take up motorbikes without any prior discussion.

I live alone in a flat. Have checked with other residents of the building.
