Can we talk about ducks in a row?

It’s clear I’m being “quietly fired”.

Spanner in my works, there are No jobs, I’m looking like it’s a part time job, there is nothing.

As my job has always been unstable, people are let go a lot, I began to squirrel away money to cover bills should it happen to me.

Ive enough to cover a year if im very very frugal.

I have around 5 years of working left in me at my age. Pension is there but not great for when needed.

But I need to work. My confidence due to the whole shit show of quiet firing, is very very low, I’m suffering while trying to manage a situation out of my hands. Obviously need to think & plan with clarity.

What else do I need to do?

Are you a single person?
any dependents?

Talltreesbythelake · 29/11/2025 14:24

Can you sign up with an agency? There are short term jobs available and you would be able to pick and choose to some extent.

Pottersciderbar82 · 29/11/2025 14:27

I’m main wage earner, kids & dh

I have contacted an agency I have dealt with previously. They are keeping an eye out but admitted that there is nothing.

Dependent kids?

Are you being fired or made redundant

Pottersciderbar82 · 29/11/2025 14:41

Dependant kids yes.

Dont yet know if it will be redundant or if they are trying to make me quit.
Not sacking I don’t think.

“Trying to make you quit ” - well don’t cave in!

Redundancy you’ll get a payout? Have you been advised that you are at risk of redundancy?

sacking - there’ll be a process and have you been put on any performance review?

you are planning to retire in 5 years? I am trying to understand whether you need to work financially or whether this is because you mentally need to work - not clear from your op

smallglassbottle · 29/11/2025 14:57

Don't quit! Tell them you'll take redundancy. If they sack you it'd better be watertight legally otherwise you can go to tribunal. Don't give them reason to sack you. Keep a paper trail, record things covertly if necessary, cover your arse.

Pottersciderbar82 · 29/11/2025 15:00

Thanks for your answers.
I need to work financially.
Recent redundancies, changes going on.
Not on a performance plan, but they are minutely way they are treating me, there’s something coming…

What industry are you in op?
you really want to avoid the sacking scenario however unless you do something grossly negligent, they’ll be a process so you’ll be very aware if it’s likely on the cards.

smallglassbottle · 29/11/2025 15:14

They can 'have something coming' all they like, but it'll have to be within the law otherwise you'll be needing a payout.

Davros · 29/11/2025 15:38

You’re 5 years away from pension but you’ve got dependent kids? Quite unusual

Yes I am confused by that

Pottersciderbar82 · 29/11/2025 15:58

That’s what happens when you have an amazing surprise baby in your 40’s 😀

5 years from retirement so…. You are 62?

NoDramaRama · 29/11/2025 16:04

Document everything in a daily diary so you have a contemporaneous record. Print out emails because they can be ‘disappeared’. Are you in a union?

No, I can take my public sector pension at 60. I left that job so pension is frozen, won’t be a huge amount, won’t cover all bills but with a top up income I won’t need to stay in this shaky job.

So you must have been in the public sector for many many years.

What industry are you In OP? Any chance moving back to Public sector?

Pottersciderbar82 · 29/11/2025 17:08

Many many years yes and there is absolutely no chance of getting a job back in my specialty, there are no jobs at all and likely none for a very long time.

Apart from savings, job hunting, contacting agencies, protecting my head space, keeping on going until they decide I’m gone, is there anything I’m missing???

Can your partner get any work?
Evenings, weekends, odd shifts?
There’s the secret shopper, consumer surveys stuff that can bring in a little if you have time to do it.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 29/11/2025 17:22

Reducing expenses.

Climbinghigher · 29/11/2025 17:27

Partner picking up more work.
Check you have reduced expenses.
Some sort of sideline for you or partner or family sideline. Working 5-9 as l have seen it called. I had to work on sidelines for a number of years just to cover our costs. DH was main earner. Cat sitting was probably the easiest to fit around other things & low start up (you need insurance and not much else).

Possibility of self employed?

Pottersciderbar82 · 29/11/2025 17:45

Partner does 95% of the childcare & home stuff, ferrying to and from child’s clubs, hobbies etc while working full time from home.
Due to my hours and travel with my job & me being the higher earner it’s how we work.
