And would you recommend it? I’m at risk of osteoporosis so was thinking about it for bone density, but I’ve also had a retinal detachment…

Tried one in a holiday house and it was dreadful, kind of a nasty vibration and it was some expensive brand, it's hard to believe they were ever popular.

TBH you would probably be better having a brisk walk

Twilightstarbright · 27/11/2025 07:57

MIL has one which we borrowed when she went overseas for 3 months. It’s a gimmick! Save your money.

cramptramp · 27/11/2025 07:59

They are pointless. Don’t bother.

Hensintheskirting · 27/11/2025 08:16

I would have thought you’d be better off saving your money and buying a couple of 5kg dumbbells to use for squats and lunges and some other weight bearing exercise. That, regular walking and a healthy diet will help your bones more than a great deal of jiggling.

ItsABarbecueShowdown · 27/11/2025 08:37

I can’t see them doing anyone any good. You would be better of going swimming or using weights like @Hensintheskirtingsays.

Swimming is non weight bearing so not that good for building up bones.

I'm going to do some research on this OP. I know that when the big ones that were used in gyms had been tested and were found to improve bone density. They came highly recommended by bone specialists.

I'm interested too.

How do you come to that conclusion please?

And for ANYONE who knows about bone health...swimming DOES NOTHING.

They are deemed dangerous by many, I wouldn’t touch one if I was you. Everything vibrating at high speed, think of your brain wobbling about in your head etc. dangerous for causing prolapses as organs are dislodged and wobbling your brain. Avoid x

I’ve never read anything about any of these supposed risks ns they sound highly unlikely to me. Vibration plates just don’t move at sufficient speeds and forces to dislodge body parts!

This is quite a good medical article about the contraindications for use @SaltyLemons

https://melioguide.com/osteoporosis-treatment/whole-body-vibration-therapy-contraindications/

I have one but I have to confess that it was a bit of a seven day wonder and I haven’t used it for a long time. On that basis I don’t recommend them particularly

My gym told me they were a gimmick and did nothing of any real benefit.

Ok.

My mum was told to swim and use weights when she got osteoporosis. Maybe because she’s so old (81) and was the safest way of her doing exercise. She’s quite fragile as she’s tiny. It’s improved her strength and muscle tone. She uses the weights at the gym while she’s there.

Nevermine · 28/11/2025 07:55

You would be much better off health and finance-wise buying a skipping rope. Swimming is definitely beneficial as a resistance exercise but alongside something with impact - jumping, skipping etc. The NHS has an article on prevention here

Osteoporosis - Prevention

Your genes are responsible for determining your height and the strength of your skeleton, but lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise influence how healthy your bones are.

Pumpy001 · 28/11/2025 08:14

I have been using one since 2011. I used to attend classes in Liverpool Street and they were fabulous. I found I was stronger, firmer and also more capable of doing spin classes and yoga far more intensely. The classes have since disappeared but I invested in my own personal power plate at home in 2019 and use it. Perhaps once a week. I would say that on the superficial side of things you will not get cellulite, If you use a power plate you will have a bottom made of steel and fabulous legs!

CalmShaker · 28/11/2025 08:17

Eamon Holmes advertised his vibration plate on many TV adverts, seeing him being pushed around in a wheelchair made me think perhaps it wasn't the miracle cure he claimed

Clair balding is at it now

pinkdelight · 28/11/2025 08:19

They remind me of those 1970s machines with a band around the waist that made women jiggle and did nothing much health-wise. No doubt the science has moved on and it works okay for some but better to use one at the gym rather than get it to gather dust as tends to happen for all but the most dedicated.

WhiskyandWater · 28/11/2025 08:25

I’ve got one, Trinny was recommended to get one by her PT for bone density and it was about £100 off Amazon so I took a punt. I’d be cautious with a detached retina but agree with PP mine was a seven day wonder, I need to get back to it as I think it can’t hurt and for 10 mins a day it might do my bones good.

This sounds pretty unscientific to me!

however, I have used one at my gym and didn’t like it at all!

NormaNormalPants · 28/11/2025 18:15

I have one, haven’t used it in forever. Definitely didn’t work at a frequency to dislodge vital organs mind you!

ThatNoisyBrickGuide · 28/11/2025 19:02

I stand mine up in a pint beer glass in warm water.

Yep my brain falls out everytime I use mine and my organs fall out of my bum 🤣🤣🤣 how ridiculous 🙈🙈🙈🙈

henlake7 · 28/11/2025 19:43

I don't think it would be recommended with a detached retina TBH.
I have one and have used it with weights for a couple of years now. I weight train 3 times a week with it.
No idea if it's helping my bone density but it does make my workouts feel more successful.
