I have been arguing with Chat GPT, and wondering …

Whether I might at some point switch to chatting with ‘it’ rather than here.

In truth the argument (about changes in school application processes over the last 15 years) was a little one-sided as it’s so polite and immediately acknowledged my point and adapted its opinion. But still - I could potentially have a Style & Beauty chat with it without risking wild hostility over my wardrobe suggestions, or grumpy responses to inferred bad faith when none was intended.

I’m a bit surprised at myself for discovering this thought in my head. Although - I like the variety of voices and opinions in a forum; I wonder if Chat GPT could replicate that?

I find it really weird not to want to talk to other humans.

FastFood · 26/11/2025 12:16

It's a glorified google. It doesn't care about your previous argument.

Timeforabiscuit · 26/11/2025 12:19

I find it is too supportive and if you're not careful it's just an echo chamber of your own opinion.

Sometimes you just need a stranger to tell you that it's a fucking terrible idea and move on, what did you get out of the discourse of school places? Were you challenged on a different perspective? Or did it tell you what you inherently wanted to hear?

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 26/11/2025 12:20

Oh I know, @FastFood! That’s kind of the point, or attraction. It would never be as grumpy as people are here …

I’ve been on MN for nearly 20 years, @tripleginandtonic - which does suggest I like talking to humans? 😁

But I was nevertheless wondering if anyone here has experienced that moment of suddenly finding AI chat quite fun?

🙈😂

SlipOfFinger · 26/11/2025 12:23

I had a go at arguing with it from the aspect of finding out how the free version is currently functioning, rather than for the feedback.

This is what you are arguing with.

People are in danger of gazing too long in the mirror/river with it.

Well, I really wanted a factual history without having to google it, @Timeforabiscuit. It gave me that, but drew a conclusion that was subtly different to my experience, so I said so. And it immediately incorporated my interpretation of the facts into its historical breakdown.

I am curious to know how it might conduct a proper argument, or if that’s even possible …

Try the meta one for a bit of diversity. It's way more obnoxious that Chatgpt.

ManchesterGirl2 · 26/11/2025 12:27

I'm using it more and more too. It's (by design) very focused on answering your question sensitively and in depth. It gets stuff wrong for sure, but it's a very quick way to get a detailed external "viewpoint". And better than Google in some ways as websites often don't answer your exact problem.

SlipOfFinger · 26/11/2025 12:29

It will atrophy your brain if you don't limited it's use to a Google function.

Wickedlittledancer · 26/11/2025 12:29

It’s not a person op it’s a computer program. For me I find it very difficult to correlate that with having a chat or argument, you are doing neither. It’s a computer program.

Why?

I'm currently finding it's making me more effective, by helping me analyse and get past things I'm stuck on.

The printing press and the industrial revolution made people more productive too, this though is different.

It's another apple from the tree, short term gain will be a long term loss for you.

BedlingtonLint · 26/11/2025 12:41

I use it for help with dog training and modifying recipes and things like that, and it's really good for that kind of thing because it can put infor from lots of sources together quickly.

But, I'd find it quite joyless to discuss things with people in the way I do with people online or in real life. If there's no real intelligence behind it, what's the point?

You can tell it how to be using prompts and it won't be supportive eg be harsh, speak to me like you're a counsellor I've been visiting for 5 years and be supportive but blunt, talk to me like a sister, be rude, harsh and straight to the point etc.

That doesn't really answer the question. Could you explain why you believe that using it will atrophy my brain.

It's taking your ideas, keep them off AI is my advice.

Yes I can’t work out the point, and I’m always surprised when I read about people who use it like a friend.

London taxi drivers that had 'the knowledge' suffered dementia after using GPS, is one example.

LavenderBlue19 · 26/11/2025 12:51

What on earth would be the point of chatting with something that doesn't really exist? It's only telling you what the algorithm it's working to thinks you'll want to hear.

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 26/11/2025 12:51

Oooh, @Cliffsandhills - I’m going to ask it to speak to me like a mean and ungrateful S&B poster who doesn’t reveal some major budgetary or wardrobe restriction until after I’ve wasted 10 minutes searching out what ought to be perfect items for her …

It's encouraging narcissism and brain atrophy, it's taking ideas even when you Google be careful.

I suggest having an old laptop not hooked up to the Internet for certain tasks.

I'm not putting my ideas into it, though. I'm asking it for ideas to help me out. But, I probably will stop using it now that I've read about all the resources it takes up. Although, I'm not clear how much worse it is than using Google and the likes to get the same info.

SlipOfFinger · 26/11/2025 12:58

Google is AI too and it's taking your ideas with the information is delivers and learning from the links you made to create the questions you ask and it has all your history of work, you are teaching it to be smarter.

I started an IT degree post babies, in the early 00s and I wouldn't be part of what I could see long term happening. I kept my children off screen apart from TV as long as possible. One studied philosophy at university and I always told them they would have to find AI proof jobs in the future.

I guess so, but it beats having to traipse to the library (which is very rarely open) and having to go through numerous books to collate the information I need (if they even have the relevant books available), so I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to do. My job requires me to research all kinds of topics in great detail, and doing it the old-fashioned way would mean I hardly made any money at all.
