Would you eat chicken breast if it was 4 days past its use by date? Looks and smells fine.

Is it cooked chicken breast?

It was raw. Smelt and looked fine. Fried thoroughly.

Ew. Did it not smell off?

It smelled (and tasted) stronger than usual, and the plastic packaging had swelled so tight that it looked ready to burst, but I wouldn’t say it smelled (or tasted) “off”.

I shall finish it off tomorrow.

100% No

I've looked after patients who've had anywhere from mild to severe campylobacter food poisoning from accidental raw or off chicken consumption/contamination (confirmed from stool samples)....including a couple of people (not related) who were so very severely dehydrated from the resulting D&V that they nearly needed to go to Intensive Care because it affected their kidney function so badly.

Others had ongoing stomach issues for months after the initial infection that then impacted on their quality of life.

If in doubt, throw it out, is my motto. I just don't think it's worth the risk....

I think what would worry me would be the toxins that some bacteria produce that aren't actually destroyed by heat. I can see that you could get rid of a lot of the live bacteria by extra cooking, but I'd be worried about being ill from the extra toxins produced over those four extra days.

No way.

Which don't smell.
Bacterial spoilage causes the off smell, but toxins don't.

Definitely not.

Almost 48 hours later and no sign of a funny tum/bum.
