Not really sure what childcare you'd need to do given that your kids are 13 and 15. I'm sure they can put a pizza in the oven for their tea, stick a few school shirts in the washing machine etc if needed.

No - my DH would cancel. Two surgeries and ITU, with possible readmittance? No way.

Hope you feel better soon OP 💐

You know your kids best. Will they be able to manage if hubby gets all the shopping in?

FFS @ByQuaintAzureWasp RTFT!

Obviously your DH can't leave you and children uncared for. He is the fit and able adult.

13 and 15

I'd rely on 15 year old to help with 13 year old and you ,obviously if their is no underlying problems

Do you have money to throw at the situation? Taxis to ferry them about if needed, the odd takeaway? You'll be grand, loads of kids are sorting themselves out after school 5 days a week at this age.

13 and 15 year olds are perfectly capable of looking after themselves and also you!

They can make their own lunches for school, Chuck something in the oven or microwave for dinner and make sure you’ve got yourself a cup of tea and sandwich in bed.

This

Teens are capable of looking after their own mother for a few days.

My kids are right around that age and they are boys. They are generally pretty capable and they are good kids but they have busy lives themselves. Between school and sport and (for the older one) a part time job they often out of the house until 8 or 9 pm. If they miss things they fall behind and it makes it much harder. We also live in an area where public transport is minimal so we do a lot of driving them around.

It sounds like OP has been through a really rough time. It’s not like she got her tonsils out. I would not want to be left in the care of my kids in that situation! But I guess it does also depend on the nature and importance of her DH’s trip and how long he will be gone. If he’s going to lose his job for not going then obviously it’s not worth it but short of that he shouldn’t go. My DH travels a lot for work and he makes the trips as fast as he can, like to Australia and back inside of 5 days, but sometimes he has multiple days of meetings and it has to be longer.

Tbf only half of it..... He probably should be cancelling all of it 2 surgeries in a week is going to take a decent length of time healing

hgbvchj · 02/12/2025 12:23

dh cancelled the last part as well. My recovery has been slower than I anticipated.

It's good he's cancelled. Ignore all those people saying you should manage. If you've been poorly enough to be in ITU you need an adult at home with you, preferably a driver. I had a teen become suddenly very unwell after coming home from surgery and we were told an ambulance would be over 5 hours and they strongly advised me driving him myself before he deteriorated.

It's not just practical help you need, it's an adult who will recognise if you need medical help and get it for you.
