Strange things that give you a kind of "ick" in everyday life

CariahMary · 23/11/2025 16:39

I don't mean getting the "ick" about a sexual or romantic partner. And I don't mean being put-off by things that are actually pretty grim. I mean random things that you inexplicably find a bit off-putting in everyday life.

For me, I get a kind of "ick" when I read other people talking about food on forums MN I honestly had no idea why. It's so odd, I really like reading food descriptions in books but in forums I find it really off-putting.

In the real-world, I also really hate opening other people's fridges. They always smell weird (different from my own). I have to hold my breath.

This is literally a thread about individual people’s icks. But OMG mention you don’t like dogs and suddenly you’re the worst possible human. Chill, @Justchilling07

There’s icks and there’s just unnecessary judgement, you may not like, it’s not just about dogs, it’s about other people’s choices, which aren’t impacting on your life.Yes l will try and chill, as we’re giving out advice, maybe live and let and live @PrayForMyBum just make’s life so much more pleasant😉

OhDearMuriel · 23/11/2025 20:50

Spitting by anyone. Sport event or in the street.

Moaning5 · 23/11/2025 20:56

Any meal that has chicken AND egg in together- ICK

Respectfully, maybe this thread isn’t for you if you’re going to take genuine icks so personally.

Blowing out birthday candles …no no no I don’t want a piece of cake
milk as a drink , yuck
snotty eggs , any eggs actually
blowing on food
pj’s worn anywhere other than bedroom
flip flops anywhere other than garden or beach
men in jeans that are worn really low , ditto joggers
men out in joggers for any reason other than the gym / competing in sport event or building site
gold chain around neck

Pricelessadvice · 23/11/2025 21:09

God yes, watching kids blow out candles and seeing the drops of saliva spraying everywhere. Then being asked if I want a piece of cake. No thanks.

Dentures when they aren’t in a persons mouth. A family member used to leave them in a glass in the kitchen cupboard (I have no idea why). Opening that cupboard and being greeted by a set of gross old teeth… it makes me shiver just thinking about it.

I love this thread!
I can't stand seeing men out in public bare chested. It doesn't matter if they are really fit or not. I can't bear it.
And, a controversial one I know but nightwear being worn during the day unless the person is ill. I hated going to a spa because of all the people in bath robes! 🤣

Using a hand dryer. I hate lifting my wet hands, taking 6 steps and blasting cold wet drips down my wrists. I just find it a sensory unpleasant experience, that takes far too long.

I much prefer a hand towel/tissue public loo, though understand they are not environmentally the best.

I hate hand dryers. They are also absolutely FULL of germs, they're incredibly unsanitary. I'm not a clean-freak/germphobe, but I absolutely won't go near them.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/11/2025 21:11

Old men (and it seems to be exclusively old men) and really high-pitched whistling in shops...

DuchessofStaffordshire · 23/11/2025 21:11

People who use the term 'ick'.

I hate the bath robe thing too - I don't enjoy spa days because I don't like slopping around in slippers and a robe. At home, I always get showered and dressed before breakfast and never lounge around in nightwear unless I'm at death's door.

Omg- I have this one too. How can anyone drink a hot drink and in a glass or a cold one in a mug!! I also cannot stand mixing savoury and sweet food from a buffet on the same plate. I have to have at least two plates. I hate eating food with a spoon unless it is soup, ice cream or cereal. I cannot use throwaway wooden or plastic cutlery. Cutlery must be metal.

Omg! Are you, me? I can’t bare sweet and savoury stuff together. And I can’t eat sweet condiments on savoury food. Apple sauce on pork? Blugh! And worse than that is, cranberry sauce.

When someone brushes their teeth whilst walking through the house. Say from bathroom to put kettle on in kitchen. Gross.

Ugh yes, the smell, and anyone in TV trying to talk while brushing their teeth. I mean in real life I just immediately walk away from any one that does that in my vicinity. Foam coming out of someone’s mouth, ugh.

ChasbutnotDave · 23/11/2025 21:14

People who put bags on the floor/ground.

Louisetopaz21 · 23/11/2025 21:16

People nibbling on their finger nails.
Walking into a shop when I am the only customer.
People talking on their phone loudly.

You know what else gives me the ick? People who argue with other people’s icks and don’t understand that icks are literally things you can’t help feeling and which are usually irrational / unreasonable. Especially when they do it repeatedly. On a thread about icks.

People are allowed to find things gross. It affects you in no way whatsoever. I bloody LOVE dogs and am the sort of person who will happily let them lick my face, but @PrayForMyBumis perfectly entitled to find them repellent. Her aversion to dogs doesn’t have any negative impact on either dogs or dog-owners.

Constant sniffing, just clear the nose with a clean handkerchief please
Deliberate crushing of knuckles.

People eating breakfast on the morning train commute or in the office. Particularly crossaints (messy) or porridge. It’s completely unreasonable (me, not them), but I find it really gross. I do not have the same reaction with lunch. I think it’s something to do with seeing a grown up using a spoon. Like I saw, completely unreasonable Blush

The spoon comment made me laugh

Lifelover16 · 23/11/2025 21:50

Snogging and canoodling in public
Men in baggy/low cut trousers with bum crack showing
Trout pout lip fillers and massive fake lashes
Those scrunch up your bum leggings
Sticky tables in pubs/restaurants/coffee shops
Aeroplane toilets

Jesephone · 23/11/2025 21:51

Tuna mayonnaise if the mixture has too much mayonnaise. The phrase 'sweet treats'. Shudder.

dottydoglover · 23/11/2025 21:52

Sand in the bed
