Strange things that give you a kind of "ick" in everyday life

I don't mean getting the "ick" about a sexual or romantic partner. And I don't mean being put-off by things that are actually pretty grim. I mean random things that you inexplicably find a bit off-putting in everyday life.

For me, I get a kind of "ick" when I read other people talking about food on forums MN I honestly had no idea why. It's so odd, I really like reading food descriptions in books but in forums I find it really off-putting.

In the real-world, I also really hate opening other people's fridges. They always smell weird (different from my own). I have to hold my breath.

When everyone waves at the end of a Teams meeting. Why?

Oh my God... I love this. It really makes me laugh, especially when coupled with hoards of people who haven't said a word the rest of the meeting coming off mute to say "Bye everyone" and then disappearing off the face of the earth.

I always imagine them having been pushed off a cliff 😦

I find women sitting on their partner's shoulders at gigs annoying, because they block people's views and might spill their drinks on you. However I find men sitting on shoulders unmasculine and a bit pathetic.

sammylady37 · 25/11/2025 16:55

People who kiss their dogs and let their dogs lick their faces
People who let their dogs sleep in their room, or worse, their bed.

I'd forgotten how much I hate this because I haven't been to a gig in a while, but I hate it so much. I think if I saw a friend of mine going on someone's shoulders at a gig I would have to end the friendship.

Oh, yes to very long fake women’s nails, too. Horrible!

I have friend who is a professional musician. His speciality is guitar so he keeps his finger nails longer on his playing hand, quite usual I am told. He was seeing a woman and she really was smitten but broke up with him as she couldnt get past the fingernails!

Saw it once at Monster of Rock....big mistake because we were fairly sure that what hit the back of her head was a plastic bottle of piss. She got down pretty sharpish, metalheads dont tend to hold their feelings in!

I’d feel the same! What happened to the plectrum thing they used to use, though?

truthsayers · 25/11/2025 17:17

being called honey or hun or something infantilising such as “you’re such a superstar”
Nope. I’m 50, not 5.

The type of music he plays (a specific type of classical) doesnt lend itself to using a plectrum, as the fingers need to move too fast. He has used the, bugger cant remember what they are called, metal things that you put on the end of the fingers to emulate nails? Those, but doesnt really get on with them.

ETA Finger picks!! Thank you google!

Men who wear trousers that are too short and no socks (see them dressed like this going to the races).
An overly groomed beard (think Ryland)
Long fingernails (the ones that look like claws)
Matted hair (not dreads but like one big thick matted lump. I was working in a shop and had a customer with a mass of matted hair and I started heaving.

Hand driers are disgusting anyway, they pull air from the toilet and blow it all over your hands! No one would use one if they could see the filter on one of those things.

Eew - I’m never very happy with them as they are often placed next to the bin, or those that are tap/dryer combos that splash water droplets up out of the sink. Think il going to start taking a flannel or some paper towel out with me.

My ick is people in sweaty socks when they’ve taken their shoes off. Not wanting to set off that argument again, but I would never ask people who don’t live in my house to remove their shoes before coming in. Not unless they were covered in mud anyway.

It's not a good idea to stifle a sneeze like that. Better to sneeze into a tissue.

I was going to say the same, it's a really bad idea to try to stifle a sneeze. See https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-42687970

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 25/11/2025 17:41

That’s a very long list @BauhausOfEliott !

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 25/11/2025 17:43

Young men with bushy beards. So glad I’m not young and dating now - think I would be single for life!

browser2025 · 25/11/2025 17:48

Brits that return from travelling with an Australian accent

Ooh another one, people who make appreciative noises when eating food that resemble sex noises. My sister does this and also closes her eyes, murmuring “mmmmmmm” and it makes my toes curl in revulsion.

Agreed! It’s gross. They keep doing that on I’m a celebrity with unnecessary close ups

People blowing out candles of birthday cakes and then you're offered a piece. Since covid and all those winter flu videos that show how bacteria spread from your mouth when you exhale violently I just can't eat it. I have to make an excuse. Even worse when it's a child and they blow hugely then their younger siblings all get a go. Makes me heave internally now

A few posters have mentioned the birthday cake. It’s never occurred to me to- but you are all right. Thankfully I don’t get invited to many parties!

kimf1963 · 25/11/2025 18:05

People saying and shops advertising “Picky Bits”, makes me cringe, so chavvy.
Random influencers on instagram sitting in their front rooms talking into those tiny, ridiculous microphones, thinking it makes them look like a CEO of Microsoft.
I'm a miserable cow I know😀
