Strange things that give you a kind of "ick" in everyday life

CariahMary · 23/11/2025 16:39

I don't mean getting the "ick" about a sexual or romantic partner. And I don't mean being put-off by things that are actually pretty grim. I mean random things that you inexplicably find a bit off-putting in everyday life.

For me, I get a kind of "ick" when I read other people talking about food on forums MN I honestly had no idea why. It's so odd, I really like reading food descriptions in books but in forums I find it really off-putting.

In the real-world, I also really hate opening other people's fridges. They always smell weird (different from my own). I have to hold my breath.

Home made sandwiches at other people’s houses ugh
Being behind a Honda Jazz driver when late for work 😱
Dogs drinking the remains of tea out of mugs
People gaily swinging full poo bags
The ‘water’ smell of hotel bathrooms 😩

I really dont like it when people stick out their tongue. 😳 It’s especially bad in photos.

Yes! Grown adults doing the tongue stick out thing in photos. Yuk.
It’s bad enough when teenagers do it, but 35 year old Dave. Shudder.

Pricelessadvice · 24/11/2025 07:13

And old people eating ice cream in a cone. They end up with it dribbling down their chin and their old tongue licking at the ice cream makes me heave.
Anyone eating ice cream is bad enough, but old people seem to lack the ability to keep the ice cream under control, a bit like children do. There’s a definite art to successful ice cream eating.

GameOfJones · 24/11/2025 07:56

Adults using the word "yummy."

Seeing someone lick the lid of their yoghurt pot. My colleague at work does this and I internally heave every time.

White dogs that always have brown stains on the fur around their bums and mouths 🤢.

People that stick their tongue out when they're taking a bite of food. DH does this sometimes and I can't bear it! I'll need to tell him at some point even though it's me being unreasonable 🤣.

When people order something in a cafe, and ask "Can I get....?".

yes! I totally get enraged by this.

GinkoRebelFoxes · 24/11/2025 08:28

The sound of clipping or biting nails. Long nails. Nails generally.
Dyson hand driers. The ones with the well of redistributed germs.
Chewing with an open mouth.
Discussion about any bodily fluids.
Bits of discarded false eyelashes
Sweaty palms
Touching feet.
Slugs.
Seeing people clear up their dog’s poo. Also people who do not clear up their dog’s poo. (And yes, I know the former is unreasonable)
People who talk with food in their mouth.
Sniffing.
Whingy voices.

That is just my initial list, but writing it down made me feel irritated, so I’ll postpone the rest until later.

I once dated a man who was weirdly "pointy". Pointy shoes, pointy knees, pointy chin, pointy nose.

Nope ! Clearly he was a goblin 😀

Wearing a dead person’ clothes or jewellery .

Heh that's me. I inherited a shed load of coats from my daughter. Coats for life.

LupaMoonhowl · 24/11/2025 09:03

HCPs saying ‘baby’ instead of ‘the baby’ or ‘your baby’, as in ‘When baby needs to feed,’ or ‘We’ll just need to check baby’s heart’

oh yes! Ditto ‘mum’ (and ‘tummy’ and ‘warerworks’ and ‘passed’ (as in died)
HCPs generally patronizing and infantilizing language.

Lastfroginthebox · 24/11/2025 09:04

Years ago, I went out for a walk with a boyfriend and his dog. The dog did a poo and the boyfriend picked it up in the bag, then held my hand with the same hand. I know he never actually touched the poo but it still turns my stomach to think of it.

Turnitoffnonagain · 24/11/2025 09:13

People talking or laughing too loudly in public spaces. As if they think anyone is amused or interested in them. Nope!

chocolateychurros · 24/11/2025 09:14

When my fingers touch bits of wet food in the sink 🤮 I unfortunately can’t wear gloves while washing dishes either, I feel like I can’t clean the dishes properly that way.

Sunbeam18 · 24/11/2025 09:19

When you feel hair touching your fingers as you swim in a swimming pool

fatphalange · 24/11/2025 09:20

When lone men are stood waiting for their coffee order to sit in and drink (actually it’s more if they’ve ordered a hot chocolate)

Hurryupwearedreaming · 24/11/2025 09:31

@spicycatsThere is a book I have called The Meaning of Liff. It’s basically a list of place names and their ‘meanings’. The place in this book that describes that is Shoeburyness!

Was in a coffee shop at the weekend and there were several dad's in together with babies drinking coffees. Every time a woman entered the shop they'd all - on cue - start this really performative playing with their baby then looking over at the woman to see if she noticed. It made me wonder were they all separated because their partners got the ick at them doing this.

MagpiePi · 24/11/2025 09:35

People lying on beds with their shoes or outdoor clothes on.

People using ’s to make a word plural.

fatphalange · 24/11/2025 09:39

Seeing someone attempt to make a phone call but the other person not picking up. It’s the look on their face as they are ready to speak and they realise and look a bit crestfallen

I got this book for Christmas many years ago. It’s wonderful!

honeylulu · 24/11/2025 09:52

I agree with lots of these but my worst one is hiccups. I have no idea why but it makes me feel absolutely disgusted and full of rage. I can find repetitive coughing, sneezing, sniffing, mouth breathing a bit irritating but hiccups is just so much worse, I can't even explain. My kids used to get them a lot as they would bolt their food/drink and try and talk at the same time. I would sometimes have to leave the room for a short while as the urge to shout or worse was quite alarming.

The worst thing of all is getting hiccups myself because I can't get away from it. I want to slap myself!

Yes! I have a friend who used to pick up the dog pop and then after getting back to her house would never wash her hands before handing out glasses/mugs by the rims. (Another braver friend than me used to take her own wine glass and mug to her house. )
was staying with another friend recently who has a square of dark chocolate every morning - icky enougin itself - but broke off and handed me a square from her own fingers -ugh! Made an excuse spot not liking chocolare but she tried to insist /tin ear!
(Have no problem with DP sharing food with my from his fork (in private!!!) but anyone else touching my food gives me the ick)

EthicsOnThePrecipice · 24/11/2025 10:19

Crocs/sliders/suede clogs especially when worn outside, more so on in wintertime.
People talking on speakerphone, especially when holding the phone horizontally.
Not being able to form plural or genitive using s and/or apostrophe correctly
People talking in exaggerated accents thinking it’s cool.
People over the age of five that insinst on elaborate birthday celebrations.
People.

Musicians/ singers in tight long sleeved tops that are either sequinned or look polyester ish. I can't stop thinking about how sweaty / smelly they must be in them. I really have to concentrate on other things to get it out of my head.

Yes! This, and leather trousers. Makes me think how underneath the sexy exterior is a sweaty sausage like mass of flesh, even if the person is slim. Ick!
