Car frost covers- obvious question

hopspot · 22/11/2025 10:02

I’m sure I’m missing something obvious.

we've bought a frost cover for our car. We used it on Thursday night. On Friday morning it was completely frosted over. The car underneath was clear of frost. This was great.

However, I pulled off the cover and then what do I do with it? I’m rushing off to work so I’ve got a huge frosty/wet cover and nowhere to put it.

I wrapped it up with the frost inside and left it on the kitchen floor. When I got home from work the frost had defrosted and the cover was sodden. It repels water but the water is all beaded on the cover. I’ve stretched it across the kitchen floor and am wiping with kitchen roll but it’s still very wet and it seems to be a very long, tedious process that I don’t have time or space for.

What am I missing? Surely there’s an obvious way for drying/storing a frost cover?

I shake all the frost off, or as much as possible, then Chuck it in the boot or rear footwell. I don’t fold it and trap the moisture in, it’s pretty minimal after a good shake anyway, so doesn’t cause any damp/smell if the remainder gets absorbed by the boot/rear footwell carpet. It’s dry when I come to put it on the same night.

I used to use a windscreen cover and had the same problem. I tried to shake off the excess frost and then put it in the boot. But I don't like leaving damp stuff in the car because it can cause condensation on the inside of the windows. In the end I stopped using it, it just transferred the hassle from scraping to dealing with the cover. And you have to get it dry again to put on next evening or there's no point.

I shake it off and leave it hanging over gate in the garden.

for people who don’t have a garden - maybe leave it in the bath or hanging up in shower?

I put mine over the back seat of the car (dry side down) and with the car heater on etc it dries quite quick. Sometimes I will put in hall way on floor but it doesn't leak water

Mumteedum · 22/11/2025 18:55

I trap mine in the wheely bin hanging outside and then put it in the garage if it's still wet.

I got a spray that's good. You spray night before and it doesn't freeze as hard so ecan wipe off. Halfords!

snoopyfanaccountant · 22/11/2025 19:09

I take it off, open the garage door and throw it into the garage. By the time I get home it has dried and I put it back in the car.

Not good for now but next time, get a car with a heated front windscreen. I would seriously not get a car without it now. It is a game changer.

topcat2014 · 22/11/2025 19:24

I just use old blankets and leave them outside. Don't put them in the car as that brings moisture inside

Oh absolutely!!! My previous car had it but my new car doesn’t and I really miss it.

RedRiverShore5 · 22/11/2025 19:26

Next door leave theirs over the gate

PodMom · 22/11/2025 19:26

Shake it and put it in the footwell.

rightoguvnor · 22/11/2025 19:27

I have a lidded plastic box outside the front door with scrapers, an old milk carton to use for tepid water, there’s some de-icer spray but we decided a few years ago not to use chemicals as they go into the water table eventually so the de-icer is probably out of date. We bung our damp car covers into the box and then sort them out in the evening.

TheChosenTwo · 22/11/2025 19:27

I never bothered getting one as the time it would take to bang it off and artfully drape it in the boot so it wouldn’t go musty and manky seemed about the same as it takes me to use my excellent scraper! Plus I can get the car going and heating up in the one minute scraping time - it’s obviously not warm by the time I get in but I’m one minute closer 😂
They just seem like extra faff to me.

Willowback · 22/11/2025 21:07

I shove it in the utility room sink

Beat me to it!.
That is exactly what we do with ours.

I wasn’t keen on my last car at all. But the heated front screen was the best thing about it. And I miss it now

LezUlez · 22/11/2025 21:38

I had one of these years ago. There was no drive near the house, so putting it in the garden/house wasn't an option, I had to put it in the boot. And then one morning I came out and caught the neighbour's tom cat spraying it. I'll never forget the smug look on his face

HedgeWitchOfTheWest · 22/11/2025 21:41

outrageous alternatives you didn’t ask for:

  1. get a ford with a heated windscreen (honestly the best thing ever)
  2. or, get an EV that preconditions so that not only is the windscreen clear but the whole car is warm and ready to go. (And it’ll cost you so little to run)
ExquisiteDresses · 22/11/2025 21:46

Mine's the foil type, so most of the frost just shakes off. Then drape it over the rear seat (I virtually never have more than one early morning passenger). If I needed the rear seat I'd chuck it in the downstairs bath. It's brilliant.

ApparentlyIsMyCircusAndMyMonkeys · 22/11/2025 21:59

I give mine a shake and put it in the passenger footwell, then once I’ve parked somewhere I’m going to be for at least 30mins I get it out and put it back over the windscreen and it dries (unless it’s raining in which case it sits in the footwell until I’m parked up for the night again then back on it goes!)

ClassicalQueen · 22/11/2025 22:01

I used to put it in the boot, however decided it’s not worth the faff anymore and just use de-icer.

MouldyCandy · 22/11/2025 22:51

I drape mine over my wheelie bin.

ByRealLemonFox · 22/11/2025 22:55

We leave ours over the dustbin. Whoever is home that day then brings it inside after a while. If noone is home it stays outside.

It's the main reason I'm not changing my car 🤣
