Best acting performances ever...

I'll start. Hoping for inspiration as I'm running out of Saturday night choices!

Charlize Theron - Monster. Her acting and appearance were both absolutely mind blowing

Leonardo Di Caprio - What's Eating Gilbert Grape. How he didn't win every award under the sun makes me wonder who he fell out with in Hollywood!

Tom Hanks - Captain Phillips. Especially the end scene where he's gone into shock. But then he's my favourite actor in the solar system...

Elizabeth Debicky - The Crown. She was more like Diana... than Diana!

Who are your additions?

Edward Norton in Primal Fear.
Jessie Wallace as Kat Slater when she told Zoe she was her mother

Cheese55 · 21/11/2025 21:31

That young lad in Adolescence. Helped by amazing writing though.

Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane...when she serves up a dead rat to her sister

I thought it was sisters cat - my sister and I always joke about it!

TwistedWonder · 21/11/2025 21:33

Jamie Foxx in Ray. I almost forgot I was watching an actor and not a documentary he was so good.

shellyleppard · 21/11/2025 21:34

ladygindiva · 21/11/2025 21:35

Oh yes!

Truetoself · 21/11/2025 21:54

Damian Lewis - brilliant and versatile. I especially liked him in The Forsythe Saga

LaMarschallin · 21/11/2025 21:55

Derek Jacobi in "I, Claudius".
Beautiful piece of very technical acting - must have been so hard physically but he never let up on the emotional side either.

Nickyknackered · 21/11/2025 21:59

I dont thinkni watch very much good TV. Ive seen literally none of these apart from Love Actually!

LaMarschallin · 21/11/2025 21:59

Oh and Diana Dors in "Yield to the Night".
Her figure and becoming a platinum blonde made her a star but obscured the fact that she could really act.

giveyourselfapresent · 21/11/2025 22:49

Matthew McConaughey in True Detective. Astonishing.

Funnywonder · 21/11/2025 22:54

Dustin Hoffman and John Voight in Midnight Cowboy. Both brilliant. Can’t pick between them.

Waitingfordoggo · 21/11/2025 22:54

A small thing but Ricky Gervais as Andy in Extras where he’s in the Big Brother House and makes an impassioned speech about fame and what a nonsense it all is. He cries when he addresses his friend watching at home, who he has wronged. I know Gervais is a Marmite person in general and not everyone enjoys his comedy, but he really does have acting talent.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/11/2025 23:07

Al Pacino in The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2.

Richard E. Grant in Withnail and I.

Not a duff performance in any of them, actually.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/11/2025 23:09

Benedict Cumberbatch in The Hollow Crown.

A very old one but Hilda Ogden holding her husband's glasses and breaking her heart when he died has stayed with me for decades.

Was coming on to say exactly this. That's the best bit of acting I think I've ever seen.

TheBaneOfLife · 21/11/2025 23:13

James mcavoy In split

murasaki · 21/11/2025 23:14

I loved the Hollow Crown. Anthony Quale as Falstaff was my favourite.

PSH in Happiness was astonishing. I almost had sympathy for a sex pest. He was such a great actor.

A very underrated film. I recommended it to a colleague, and she said afterwards that her partner who I'd not met at that point, reminded her of one of his personae. I jokingly said, surely not Hedwig, which it wasn't, but she never said which. I met him and he was lovely, and I never figured it out...

Karmacamelia · 21/11/2025 23:30

Anthony Hopkins in The Father, heartbreaking film about dementia, I think anyone who wants to work with people with dementia should watch this.
Also - As pp said, Corrie's Hilda Ogden's tender moment with Stan's glasses, Jacob Elordi in Saltburn, John Malkovitch in Dangerous Liaisons, all main actors in Our Friends in the North
