Vomit Survey (Idle Curiosity)

When you're at home and need to vomit, and have enough time to get to a suitable place, what do you choose?

a) Lavatory
b) Bathroom sink
c) Kitchen sink
d) Laundry sink
e) Bucket
f) Garden
g) Neighbour's garden
h) Other

I use the big laundry sink. Its ample size and convenient height make it much more comfortable than crouching over a toilet bowl.

But I realise this may be Australia-centric as many British homes don't have laundry sinks.

The nearest toilet - the upstairs bathroom would probably be my preference but I wouldn’t be fussy about that.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/11/2025 09:13

whichever I’d get to quickest

Haveyou3 · 21/11/2025 09:14

In a bin bag where there is nobody near me. I have emetophobia and being sick in a toilet makes me panic more. No idea why🤷🏻‍♀️

Pedallleur · 21/11/2025 09:14

Happened in our house last night. Toilet. Anywhere else indoors may require major clean up. A large washing up bowl is good.as it can rinsed/bleached.

SmockAndBeret · 21/11/2025 09:22

I haven’t vomited for 33 years. Threw up shortly after having my first DC, but not since.
Think I probably don’t need a plan!

DappledThings · 21/11/2025 09:24

It's not anywhere near common enough that I need a plan for it or a family sick bowl. Can't remember the last time anyone in this house vomited. DD did about 3 and a half years ago on holiday

Justlostmybagel · 21/11/2025 09:25

The family popcorn bowl at home.

I carry a plastic carrier bag in my pocket for when I need to vomit out and about.

Octavia64 · 21/11/2025 09:25

Bucket.

can easily be rinsed/bleached.

i do have a laundry sink. The cat sleeps in it. He would not be amused.

RampantIvy · 21/11/2025 09:28

It isn't something I do regularly either, but I would use the toilet. Wouldn't it block a sink if you used that?

I think the last time I threw up was when I picked up norovirus from the hospital that DD had been in 21 years ago. She had it first then passed it on to me.

Elboob · 21/11/2025 09:30

Used to be toilet but now my bathroom sink doesn't have grill in it so everything washes down without getting stuck (tmi) so that is the preference.
Then a big pan for back in bed

Devilsmommy · 21/11/2025 09:30

Toilet. Anything else requires clean up and I'm too lazy😂

It does block the plughole temporarily but it's easily cleared.

I don't often actually vomit, but sometimes wake up with blocked sinuses due to allergies, which can lead to dry-retching (which I sometimes force to help clear the problem).

This usually just involves heavy breathing and expectorating the saliva the body produces when expecting vomit. However there's always a chance that real vomit will ensue so I like to get to the laundry sink in time.

Lavatory
Bucket

Bathroom washbasin at a push if no bucket to hand and can't vacate toilet for "other reasons".

Kitchen sink if absolutely can't make it upstairs in time.

I can't imagine vomiting anywhere else.

Neighbours garden? Surely some back story there?

Mikart · 21/11/2025 09:33

The toilet. Luckily I've been sick once in about 30 years

chattyness · 21/11/2025 09:35

The loo, so I can flush it away quickly & it's gone forever. I don't want to block the sink pipes as they are quite narrow & then I'd have the added joy of unbocking them and experiencing the vomit smell again, bleurgh!

FiveShelties · 21/11/2025 09:37

That's good going! You're not blood group B, by any chance? That's meant to be less susceptible to norovirus at least.

And re the original question: toilet. Something freeing about being able to just flush away, whatever abomination has just occurred, and also helpful to sit in front if you're feeling faint. If I have time I clean the toilet/around it first - fancy 😉

FlatErica · 21/11/2025 09:40

Toilet but then I live in a very small flat and it’s literally two seconds away

user90276865197 · 21/11/2025 09:41

Always the loo. I don’t think I’ve ever been sick without plenty of warning, a good half hour to ‘enjoy’ feeling queasy before any action…

TheeNotoriousPIG · 21/11/2025 09:52

My personal preference would be the loo, because then it can be flushed away, with minimal cleaning up to do afterwards, when I am feeling rotten! I have been forced to vomit in the bath once, during a D&V illness (fortunately, the loo is right next to the bath, so i just had to lean over!), which was a bit messy, and I didn't enjoy picking it out of the plughole. If I am feeling sick in bed, then I have a washing-up bowl for that purpose. I have vomited in the garden once, and would cheerfully vomit in a certain neighbour's garden, just to annoy him. (He likes to make our lives hell at times...).

What's a laundry sink for, OP? I haven't come across this concept before! I'm just wondering if I need one to add to my house's to-do list, despite being in the UK 😁

propercoppercoffeepot · 21/11/2025 09:55

Bucket or toilet - kids prefer bucket.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 21/11/2025 09:56

A toilet.

sinks/basins get blocked too easily

Tillow4ever · 21/11/2025 09:58

Nearest toilet. My middle son was sick a few weeks ago. He’s 17. I got up to find a sink full of vomit because it doesn’t clear away. My eldest son, only last year, managed to block his girlfriend’s sink at uni by being sick in it. Sadly my 17 year old was using the toilet for the other end, so the sink was his only option with no notice.

i would never recommend being sick in British sinks unless you want to deal with the clogging.
