Vomit Survey (Idle Curiosity)

When you're at home and need to vomit, and have enough time to get to a suitable place, what do you choose?

a) Lavatory
b) Bathroom sink
c) Kitchen sink
d) Laundry sink
e) Bucket
f) Garden
g) Neighbour's garden
h) Other

I use the big laundry sink. Its ample size and convenient height make it much more comfortable than crouching over a toilet bowl.

But I realise this may be Australia-centric as many British homes don't have laundry sinks.

Always go for the loo if at all possible.

I have been sick on a bus and I was trying so hard not to buy just couldn't help it. My only choice was to puke into my coat sleeve because I didn't want it to go on the floor 🤮 I had to carefully take the coat off and fold it up to try to seal it all in there. I had to carry it all the way home and then it went in the washing machine on its own about 5 times 😂

Helpmechooseausername · 22/11/2025 02:04

Also, I have terrible pelvic floor muscles so nowadays I have to sit on the loo and puke into a bowl or else I'll wet myself while puking. Not glamorous at all.

Maybe that's better. I remember being sick in the loo once and finding myself thinking way too much about what goes into the loo.

Trying to seal sick in a coat sleeve sounds a nightmarish challenge. Anyway a heroic effort, well done.

A large bowl or the toilet. Both pressed into service last weekend when I had biliary colic.

The laundry sink is right beside my back door so might not be too pleasant for anyone walking past it to get to one of the other flats!

My personal preference would be the loo, because then it can be flushed away, with minimal cleaning up to do afterwards, when I am feeling rotten! I have been forced to vomit in the bath once, during a D&V illness (fortunately, the loo is right next to the bath, so i just had to lean over!), which was a bit messy, and I didn't enjoy picking it out of the plughole. If I am feeling sick in bed, then I have a washing-up bowl for that purpose. I have vomited in the garden once, and would cheerfully vomit in a certain neighbour's garden, just to annoy him. (He likes to make our lives hell at times...).

What's a laundry sink for, OP? I haven't come across this concept before! I'm just wondering if I need one to add to my house's to-do list, despite being in the UK 😁

Don't you have laundry sinks in the UK? I use mine for all sorts of things, they are pretty standard in NZ.

SuperMix · 22/11/2025 06:00

Toilet with noise cancelling headphones on and music all the way up so I can’t hear it and never opening my eyes. Then a shower. I hate the whole aspect of vomiting I just can’t cope with it. I’m so much better than I used to be because I developed a fear of vomit after my dad spent his last day on earth vomiting and he was so sick and he was really loud being sick (not his fault but it became a massive phobia for me) then I met my husband and he kind of helped me because of how much he’s sick. He’s sick probably once a month and very loud! He’s sick so much because he’s got a physical condition it’s not alcohol related.

Curiousrobin · 22/11/2025 06:12

Toilet. But I only have one that is upstairs so if I was in a real rush I'd probably head for the kitchen bin.

jemim · 22/11/2025 06:35

Neighbours garden? 😂😂 honestly the image of thinking “oh god I’m going to puke” then hot footing it out through my kitchen, past my toilet, through my own garden and holding it in until I reach next door’s hydrangeas has set me off with the giggles.

In reality my neighbours are lovely so I’ll stick with the toilet.

Haveyou3 · 21/11/2025 09:14

In a bin bag where there is nobody near me. I have emetophobia and being sick in a toilet makes me panic more. No idea why🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m the same, the toilet adds to the panic. My saint of a DH who knows what I’m like provides a basin and does the emptying.

GameOfJones · 22/11/2025 07:38

My preference would be the toilet so it's flushed away and gone but I haven't vomited since I was pregnant with DD1 who is nearly 9 so it's not something I put a lot of consideration into.

DinoLil · 22/11/2025 08:04

Bucket or bin bag here. I'm a sicky kind of person and the toilet makes me feel even more sick (even though I had a brand new one put in yesterday!).

Giraffemug30 · 22/11/2025 08:33

Anyone not chosing a toilet is insane. Vomit is an infective bodily fluid and it goes in the toilet. Toilets flush and it goes away. Yeah you might want to chuck some bleach down but no additional cleaning or emptying involved

No one wants to pick chunks out a sink or pour a bucket down the loo. Sometimes needs must and a bucket/sink is the only receptacle that can be accessed in time but the toilet is preferable

Sometimes it's more convenient to piss in the sink but obviously one should piss in the toilet.

Insanity not required. The rare bit of sick is fine washed down my big laundry sink (which has a high pressure mixer tap), followed by a good squirt of toilet cleaner.

All ends up in the same sewer, and the laundry sink isn't used for anything to do with food.

You literally said above the chunks block the plughole, and you've still got hose rather than just press the flush. You've got to actively look at it. It's all sorts of wrong.

I also feel like the angle to get it into the sink would be wrong

Blindsided2025 · 22/11/2025 10:19

Toilet. Any toilet. Surely the sink would clog unless you fish bits out of the plug hole (which sounds like hell, especially if you’re already ill!) We have a huge ancient designated family sick bowl for if someone needs to stay in bed.

Not a regular occurrence though.

lljkk · 22/11/2025 10:31

I've had this decision a lot. I had bad morning sickness in 4 pgs, then plenty of noro in the house for years.
Would run for Toilet unless I might be woken with immediate need in middle of night, so might have a bucket in case then. And bucket would only be emptied into toilet.

Have never used a sink & can't imagine how people would prefer that given the chunks and small pipes and trap-capture problems.

rainbowunicorn22 · 22/11/2025 10:38

have not been sick in years but i would try to get to the loo. we always were given a bucket when i was a child and now its given me an almost phobia about being sick in buckets!

Bit of clogging, but it's easy enough to shift with the toilet brush, then thoroughly clean.

As I also mentioned, I rarely actually vomit anyway - it's mainly for comfortable dry-retching (the angle and extent of bending over is perfect for me) with a nice big sink in case it turns into actual vomit.

Many people here have reported how vomiting in the toilet is traumatic for them.

Fifthtimelucky · 22/11/2025 19:14

I can’t remember the last time I vomited. I think it must be at least 25 years ago.

If I needed to, I’d head for the nearest loo.

I'm afraid not! I've lived in four different counties of the UK so far, and I've never heard of one until this thread came up. Our utility rooms (if you're lucky enough to have one) just tend to be home to things like washing machines, dryers, and perhaps a storage cupboard. My fridge also lives in there, because the kitchen is tiny. Laundry sinks do sound like an excellent idea, though!

Just after I made my post I remembered that most of you seem to have washing machines in the kitchen so of course you wouldn't have laundry sinks. I use mine all the time and would hate not to have one.

SuperGinger · 24/11/2025 20:01

Bucket or loo. Although growing up my mum always used to tell us to vomit in a potty which she hid in the airing cupboard and whipped out whenever anyone got sick. In fact there were two - a yellow one with winnie the pooh on it and a baby pink one. Hadn't thought of those potties about 35 years.

SuperGinger · 24/11/2025 20:03

My grandparents who were old school, always left chamber pots underneath everyone's beds just in case if any upsets.

Jk987 · 24/11/2025 20:03

Toilet of course! Then it’s flushed away with minimal clean up. Why would you choose to do it in a sink or elsewhere? 🤢

Waitingfordoggo · 24/11/2025 20:16

The loo. But it’s so rare - I can’t remember the last time I threw up.
