How do you keep yourself from binge eating?

dogsandbudgey · 18/11/2025 17:32

This is something I struggle with. I can stick to a diet great for about 5/6 weeeks, but then I just seem to have an off day then before I know it I’m completely submerged in biscuits and crisps! I used to be able to stick long term to a weight loss plan but now it seems so hard.

have you any tricks up your sleeve?

If you’re really craving something you've got in the house, summon up your courage for just a few seconds and squirt washing-up liquid all over it! You won’t be able to do anything other than throw it away then.

Resisting the first biscuit is a lot easier than the subsequent ones.
Put the temptation out of sight.
The biscuit barrel on the counter will beckon at you.

Absolutely. I can easily ration biscuits to two but when it comes to chocolate I am lost if I have the tiniest bit. So I never eat chocolate.

Meadowfinch · 18/11/2025 18:47

I don't diet.
I cook from scratch every day including making all our bread
I avoid all upfs
I eat meat/fish/eggs/cheese and fruit & veg.
I don't limit my food - I eat until I'm full.

I have Ryvita and low fat cheese spread for when I’m peckish between meals, and Skinny Whips for after dinner to take the sweet edge off. Seems to help

I think there's a distinct set of two types of commenters in this thread. Those who probably have binge eating disorder and those who don't.

People who say they don't binge by just not buying biscuits/sweets clearly don't have any real issues with food. Mentally healthy people operate in a very straightforward way when it comes to food - out of sight, out of mind.

People with food issues like BED just cannot stop thinking of their binge foods constantly. Not buying the binge food will lead them to go to extreme lengths to get it, or find something similar. Rummaging through bins, eating sugar out of the packet, driving to the shop at 1am to buy it in secret.

I wish I had an easy fix for OP but I'm still working on it. I suggest lots of counselling and stress reduction in other areas of life, as well as mindful eating strategies.

Totally agree. Same as happily married ones who say LTB…

It’s not even about the food, it’s the trance-like soothing of it.

The Kardashians do this! Two bites, then perfume!

HouseAshamed · 18/11/2025 19:17

@Gowlett , I kind of get what you mean but the OP didn't say it was for BED sufferers only. I get into a strange state when bingeing and can only give suggestions that work for me.

Bu keeping extremely extremely busy

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 18/11/2025 19:28
  1. don't have the food in the house & walk to the shop if I really want something
  2. keep some healthier snacks (crackers or rice cakes or plain popcorn instead of crisps, fruit for chocolate)
  3. bake sweet treats instead so I know what's going into them
  4. have a hot chocolate instead
  5. ask myself why I want to eat rubbish - boredom? Sadness? Find another way to deal with the emotion
BrightLimePombear · 18/11/2025 19:29

I am nearly a week into the Glucose Goddess method. It was recommended by my doctor and so far so good.

MrsPrendergast · 18/11/2025 19:30

If you actually do binge, then you need help.

If you actually over eat, then don't buy the high calorie food

HouseAshamed · 18/11/2025 19:40

@ShamrockShenanigans You could buy ones you don't like.

Mother was a 'feeder'. I don't think there was much money. We didn't go without but ...

OnePearlHelper · 18/11/2025 19:46

Read Allen Carr emotional eating book, it’s worked wonders for me. I used to binge everyday and I haven’t for 4/5 weeks now

countdowntonap · 18/11/2025 17:47

150g protein every day.
Haven’t binged since. Almost two years now.

Exactly.
if your is deficient in Protein will cause your body to crave sugar/ cakes/ biscuits etc.
I started eating meat protein everyday.
Binges stopped over night , 30 years ago. Feel so much more healthy.

Appleberrybloom · 18/11/2025 19:54

I try not to eat foods straight from the packet. I negotiate a portion size with myself and then place say 1 biscuit, handful of crisps, few chocolate buttons into a bowl. If I sit down with a pack I know I'll eat it. .

Try fill up on the right things before you risk binge eating crap

If you do binge eat, try keep it as an isolated incident dont write of the entire day/week

Do occasionally allow yourself a treat, otherwise thr forbidden "fruit" becomes all the more desirable.

I'm on a weight loss journey and these things help me. I have good days and bad days 😂

FinallyHere · 18/11/2025 20:06

Making adjustments helped me continue without binging, Gillian Riley’s approach was the one that really resonated with me.

HouseAshamed · 18/11/2025 20:22

If you are craving something, eat that not something 'healthy', unless you can have a satisfying substitute.

For example, if I want a bar of chocolate but eat a (low calorie) sandwich instead, I'll still be craving the chocolate bar after eating it (and anything else I can ger my hands on).

A substitute might be some cheese or a hot chocolate drink. Instead of crisps or biscuits, oatcakes.

Works for me.

B0D · 18/11/2025 20:44

How to achieve 150 G protein?
today I’ve eaten a banana 50 g hummus with carrot. Lentil and spinach dhal with a Wholemeal pitta.
I do eat boiled eggs, fish, chicken etc just not huge quantities
I also regularly eat avocados and nuts

my body just doesn’t crave protein

Haribosweets · 18/11/2025 21:14

Not for everyone but mounjaro. Best thing ive done for binge eating / cravings

HouseAshamed · 18/11/2025 21:26

@B0D That's because you eat it. If I don't eat enough of it I crave it.
It's quite easy to not eat it if you eat rubbish.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 18/11/2025 21:28

Violetparis · 18/11/2025 17:35

Obvious one is don't have biscuits or crisps in the house.

I wish this worked for me but I'd immediately pop to the shop if there was no chocolate in the house.

MeridaBrave · 18/11/2025 21:36

Eat protein first, 150g and also 30g of fibre.
don’t have the biscuits or chocolate in the house.

otherwise try mounjaro.

mondaytosunday · 18/11/2025 21:36

If I get the munchies at night I eat pickles! I also stuff myself with vegetables. I like feeling full, so veggies is the only way I can without being the size of a bus (I’m overweight but have lost 12kg since September 1). And as people say don’t have the food in the house.
Keeping a food diary and planning up to a week ahead is also good - I know what I can eat and tend to stick to it if it’s written down (I use My Fitness Pal).

Turnitoffnonagain · 18/11/2025 21:37

The thought that it takes three or four times as long to lose the weight as it does to gain it. Also, the thought that all those empty calories in crisps cakes and chocolate do nothing positive for a body. Just damage and weight gain.

B0D · 18/11/2025 22:07
