Who would go in and would stay at home?

Sent a message to my manager today, I am off on leave this week but had offered to come in for overtime tomorrow which was accepted however my husband has got a rare day off and suggested we spent it together if possible.

Messaged manager around 3 hours ago to say similar to above DH has day off, it would be nice to spend it together however if I’m needed or it’s busy I can still come in and despite seeing that they have read it, I have had nothing back in return.

I don’t find situations like this easy, where there is no definite answer and leaning towards just going in despite a colleague saying it’s not been particularly busy and it was her she just wouldn’t turn up.

What would you do?

What?!

This is such a strange response, there are literally hundreds of reasons why someone in many sectors could find theirselves with an unexpected day off.

Regardless it’s the situation we find ourselves in today hence asking the question!

They will likely respond, considering it’s only been three hours since you’ve messaged. And you offered and changed plans in the same day? I’d assume I wasn’t going in unless they got back to me before tomorrow. Don’t sweat it! Have a nice day together

ginasevern · 18/11/2025 15:03

Agreed, awkward situation. I'd message again or can you phone your manager? If you're anything like me you won't be able to enjoy your day off without firm clarification.

Ohpleeeease · 18/11/2025 15:05

I would assume you aren’t needed and the manager is making other arrangements.

Thank you work day ends at 5 so you are maybe right however I offered the days OT last week before I left…not sure if that makes any difference.

Oh I see. You offered last week. That does change things a bit. Can you call your manager directly? Just to clarify so you’re definitely sure. If she doesn’t answer, then maybe call your work place and ask for her?

ohyesido · 18/11/2025 15:17

Are you going to attend after the working day ends?

it is shady practice to take a day’s leave but then attend anyway to claim double pay for “overtime “

Sorry I don’t understand what you mean, why would I return back to work at the end of the work day?

As said in my OP I am on holiday this week, I had offered to go in tomorrow as OT but I have asked my manager if needed as DH and I have the opportunity of a day off together.

Also for the record not all organisations offer double time for OT, mine certainly doesn’t.

So are you going to work a day and be paid overtime, whilst also getting holiday pay?

So what if she is? The company doesn't lose out... they'd be paying the a/l and someone to do the work regardless.

Hope it's sorted OP.

I’m fairly certain that this isn’t allowed. Maybe it only applies if there’s a premium for working overtime but I remember a colleague and their line manager being disciplined for working overtime while on leave.

I can't imagine why they'd book you in if they didn't really need you. Maybe they're trying to find someone else and if not will say pls can you still come. If you haven't heard soon just call manager directly to see what they say. It may well be that they do still need you and weren't mad on your reasoning for changing your mind.

JillMW · 18/11/2025 21:38

I think you are messing your manager around. You offered to go in, they accepted. Presumably they needed a member of staff and now need to find someone at short notice. Three hours is not sufficient notice unless a person is unwell/emergency.

Bowling4soup · 18/11/2025 21:47

I’d say the delay in replying is likelythem Trying to arrange alternative cover before giving you an answer. If you don’t hear anything I would attend for your shift as expected, because no one will have said to you that it’s fine to not show up. Therefore you need to go in

Fuzzymuddle33 · 18/11/2025 22:04

I’d send a follow up ‘just checking that you received the above as I don’t want to let you down if I’m needed?’

job done

That is allowed in some jobs. Holiday is yours to do as you wish - if you want to take on a days bank/overtime with it you can.

CocksBolingey · 19/11/2025 06:02

Just call your manager. Gets it cleared up in seconds without having to wait for a WhatsApp/text response.

Bjorkdidit · 19/11/2025 06:27

Agree that this is a time to call and have a conversation, not message where it can take hours to sort it out and there can be misunderstandings.

But if work is not busy, why not take the day off as planned?

Doone22 · 19/11/2025 07:12

I'd hate to be your manager, must be so frustrating.
Are you in, are you off? Who knows? You certainly don't.
Ignore the fact you are on hols you already offered and have an agreement to be working on a specific date so stick to it and stop mucking everyone around. It's just ridiculous to expect everyone else to keep up with your mindless changes of direction.
You're clearly just a people pleaser. In future you should decide what you want and then follow the plan.

This. Was coming on to say exactly the same. You say you find situations that are vague difficult but you have absolutely contributed to this by not asserting your preference about how you want to spend the time.

Your boss is in a no win. Call you in and feel guilty about ruining your day. Not calling you on and whilst trying to sort out cover is having to field calls/emails from you which are not clear.

if you had just said…..Ah, so sorry about this but I am going to have to withdraw my offer to do OT tomorrow due to XYZ. As you know I am always happy to cover when you are short but can’t do it tomorrow. Hope this gives you enough notice to fill. See you later

Andromed1 · 19/11/2025 08:39

Youve had some pointlessly bossy responses OP. Its a shame this happened but i think that unless you can get hold of your manager in time, you need to turn up for the shift.

MidnightEagle · 19/11/2025 10:00

Did you go in OP?

Theslummymummy · 19/11/2025 10:32

I dunno, surely tou should stick to the agreement if you haven't heard, and why can't you just ring them to find out?
