What do you think of Shabana Mahmood's latest plans based on the Danish model, to curb illegal immigration and to stauch the flow of boat arrivals?

OP posts:
Kreepture · 16/11/2025 14:53

why?

Kreepture · 16/11/2025 14:54

Are YOU a labour voter? What do you think about it?

IdaGlossop · 16/11/2025 15:03

I think the underpinning rationale - that the level of immigration is a threat to social cohesion - is sound. The 'asylum shopping' phrase is inflammatory and didn't need to be used. Tick for changing domestic law and not withdrawing from the ECHR - in turbulent times, cooperation with other is important. Questions - What about processing the 250k backlog? What about the plans for housing asylum seekers on Ministry of Defence land? Timescales for this new plan?

The wave of immigration since Brexit has been badly managed by both parties, especially the Conservatives. Immigration has brought and is bringing the UK many benefits. The small boat arrivals of mainly young men is something we haven't seen before. Putting new arrivals without papers and without work in communities is highly irresponsible but it's happening across Europe. Far better for Labour to get a grip on it than fail and let Reform in.

why?

because I am interested to know whether she has the support of the people who voted in this government.

No I'm not and I think it's all a positive step forward. The only issue is that without leaving the ECHR I don't see how any of it is going to be actioned without getting endlessly tangled in protracted and expensive legal challenges. But then if Denmark are managing it....

I think it's a case of I'll believe it when I see it. I'm tired of hearing plans for supposed solutions that don't actually work or never really get off the ground.

Shabana Mahmood's proposal for dealing with the ECHR is to bring in new legislation requiring the courts to prioritise the safety of British citizens first, not the human rights of asylum seekers as currently. If backbenchers oppose the legislation on ideological grounds, it will alienate voters, who will be able to say the person they elected to represent them isn't putting them first. It's a sharp move by Mahmood for this reason.

I have no doubt that Mahmood will do what she says she will do. What is not clear is whether it will work. For everybody's sake, I hope it does.

Well we have been on holiday for many years in Kent and I would say a lot of boats arrive at night and there are miles of coastline there. We got asked when we were round the shops in Folkestone if we would come down to the beach in the early hours to shout at the people who would be arriving. I said I would be asleep then and the group of men were annoyed because we didn't want to go along. Goodness only knows how many boats arrive at night. We once stayed at a flat next to the promenade and we heard a group of men shouting at 2am. The only night we did not see a lot of boats was a magnificent stormy night and there was lots of lightening strikes. We could see it from the bedroom window and the next day wherever we went to people were talking about it. No fishing boats at all and the men were not on the beach and it was quiet apart from thunder.

newusernamex1000 · 17/11/2025 07:21

I WAS a Labour vote, never again with this lot in.

IMO I believe the boats should be dragged back to France, but if some arrive at our shores they should be detained and processed straight away. Then removed.

My poor working class town has been ravaged by mass migration. We have now been placed in the top 20 deprived areas.

Something has to give.

13 people have challenged the UK and won in the ECHR court in Strasburg, since 1981.

Only 2.5% of all deportation orders were successfully challenged in UK courts in the 5 years up to 2021.....

So 97.5% of people given a deportation "could" have been deported, many simply disappear.

The ECHR isn't the problem, its people vanishing into the community and countries refusing or unable to accept deportees.

Which town is this? and when were you classed as a top 20 deprived town?

@Alexandra2001I’m in the northwest, close to liverpool

Swiftasthewind · 17/11/2025 09:01

It’s disgraceful, immigration should be increased exponentially, we need people to do the jobs lazy Brits won’t do. This is not the Labour I fell in love with, fought Nazis in the streets to protect, they are turning into the very thing we all feared.

I am so close to throwing my Labour mug and Jeremy Corbyn poster in the bin and joining the Greens.

Conservatives could never do anything. Imagine if it was Priti Patel the one proposing this.
I support the plan and hopefully will get done. Never a Labour voter but every one should get behind this.

But then the public is so against of ID cards? we're the only country, in Europe at list, which doesn't have it

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/11/2025 22:00

Dunno what to think. Voted Labour all my life. Always supported immigration, but it seems out of control now. Never seems to be women and girls, always men.

However l don’t think immigration is the cause of crap doctors or nhs or housing problems. Thats just crap infrastructure.

Contemplating Greens at next election. I’m 62, always voted Labour. Member of the Labour Party.

Politics in this country needs a shake up. Time for PR or similar.

Essential, realistic, necessary & long overdue.

If centre-left / liberal politicians cannot or will not secure borders, fascists will.

Not really.

We get a lot of Journo's that like to ask questions on thoughts/opinions without offering any of their own. It is better to check, than give a straight out answer.

The Greens would be a disaster in government, they would bankrupt us with their tax the rich policies and are open about the fact they want open borders.

You can’t just have a policy of taxing rich people to rely on an economy.

Paul2023 · 19/11/2025 22:42

I’d take my chances with them. They are as radical as Reform. But better.

Open borders are exactly what I want, and the rich should be paying much more. These are policies that should be a given for Labour so if the Green Party are where it’s at, so to speak, then I’ll just have to leave Labour behind after all these years.

Not to mention Zack Polanski seems like an honest and trustworthy politician, which is a rare thing indeed!
