What do you think of Shabana Mahmood's latest plans based on the Danish model, to curb illegal immigration and to stauch the flow of boat arrivals?

@Alexandra2001I’m in the northwest, close to liverpool

Did your constituency recently elect a Reform MP?

Open borders are exactly what I want, and the rich should be paying much more. These are policies that should be a given for Labour so if the Green Party are where it’s at, so to speak, then I’ll just have to leave Labour behind after all these years.

Not to mention Zack Polanski seems like an honest and trustworthy politician, which is a rare thing indeed!

You want open borders but how many people would you let into the country? I’m genuinely interested?

Honest? A man who charged women by hypnotising them to make their breast bigger?

And when the rich leave the UK who do you suppose will have to foot taxes ?

As many as want to come Paul. This is a free world and people should be able to come and go as they wish, we don’t own this land.

JasmineTea11 · 20/11/2025 14:55

I voted for them and support Mahmood's approach, but expect the whiney, lilly livered back benchers will chip away at it all. I'm incredibly disappointed in this government. Piss poor at politics and Starmer is a terrible leader.

I don't warm to Polanski at all.

He’s a great guy, cares about the environment and an avid feminist. He would make a great Prime Minister with Mothin Ali as Deputy.

because I am interested to know whether she has the support of the people who voted in this government.

I voted labour and agree with her proposals ( well most of them ).

Conservatives could never do anything. Imagine if it was Priti Patel the one proposing this.
I support the plan and hopefully will get done. Never a Labour voter but every one should get behind this.

I would never get behind something like that, thank you.

I think the underpinning rationale - that the level of immigration is a threat to social cohesion - is sound. The 'asylum shopping' phrase is inflammatory and didn't need to be used. Tick for changing domestic law and not withdrawing from the ECHR - in turbulent times, cooperation with other is important. Questions - What about processing the 250k backlog? What about the plans for housing asylum seekers on Ministry of Defence land? Timescales for this new plan?

The wave of immigration since Brexit has been badly managed by both parties, especially the Conservatives. Immigration has brought and is bringing the UK many benefits. The small boat arrivals of mainly young men is something we haven't seen before. Putting new arrivals without papers and without work in communities is highly irresponsible but it's happening across Europe. Far better for Labour to get a grip on it than fail and let Reform in.

I agree with all this and am a Labour voter

Parsley4321 · 20/11/2025 15:46

@Swiftasthewind really as many who want to come jeez I hope you’re joking how does that even work in practice

It's a troll. Or a moron.

Kreepture · 19/11/2025 22:11

Not really.

We get a lot of Journo's that like to ask questions on thoughts/opinions without offering any of their own. It is better to check, than give a straight out answer.

I also think it was a pointless reply.

See I think its brave of Starmer to take this issue on in this way and a sign he's strong not weak. Hampered by idealism in the back benches that we should be able to support everyone. They are seeing the strain on all public services from so much immigration and alot of asylum seekers granted asylum rely heavily on social support afterwards. The pressure on services now are immense from immigration adding to issues caused by cost of living. Deprived areas are seeing the worst of the impact.

mumsweekend · 20/11/2025 16:09

I’m a Labour voter and as such the very last thing I want to see is a Reform government. I think her plans sound sensible, well thought-through and pragmatic in the context of where we are at, and I hope everyone who is on the left, centrist or “sensible” Tories get behind this unless they want Farage as PM.

Paul2023 · 20/11/2025 16:22

I would like a sensible centre party, whether it’s Labour or not..

Local elections here tomorrow . Labour are scared Reform will win.

And did they?

I agree entirely AND I’m gasp an immigrant myself (now dual citizen)

Where was it? There were 7 local by-elections last Thursday, two of the seats were Labour held. The Greens gained one from Labour. Labour held the other. Reform gained two seats from the Tories.

I have resigned my labour party membership over this disgusting and disgraceful policy. They no longer represent my humanitarian values. I have voted Labour my whole life and am now politically homeless. 51 years old.

I know how you feel. I am in Wales and supporting Plaid Cymru now. Not sure what I will vote in Westminster elections, though. Whoever will keep Reform out, probably.
