How much is your weekly shop?

Hernamesnoelle · 13/11/2025 11:12

We are a family of 3, 2 adults 1 child (age 4).

In recent months we have had 1 'main' shopping delivery that's normally between £150-£175 and then easily spend another £20 topping up during the week.

It seems eye watering to me, as I'm sure it was about half this last year!

Interested to see if we are around average?

That’s at aldi

DeedlessIndeed · 13/11/2025 12:10

About £130, but we eat out, get a few takeaways and the odd £20 top up on top of that, so too much.

That covers 2 adults and a young child, 2 cats and cleaning bits.

missrachael · 13/11/2025 12:12

Family of 5. The food shopping is killing me. We put aside £600 a month for all food/toiletries/cleaning supplies/top ups and always run out of money before next pay day.

foreverbasil · 13/11/2025 12:13

Checked banking app average £65 a week in October. Two people, we eat well. Zero waste, no alcohol and both cook from scratch. That’s only groceries though.

missrachael · 13/11/2025 12:14

Interested in these replies as I want to show dh food prices have gone right up, he thinks i’m making it up when I say we’re running low

kellygoeswest · 13/11/2025 12:19

Single person, I do a monthly Tesco shop of around £120 and then spend maybe £10 additionally a week (usually at Tesco Express or sometimes Sains) picking up odd/fresh bits for dinners.

1 adult, 2 older teenagers (basically feeding 3 adults). £50 -60 a week. I'm always amazed at the amount people spend on these threads because if you had to (like i do) you could reduce it.
Meal plan, buy in bulk, buy extra when on offer, have a couple of cheap meals a week such as jacket potato and filling, omelette, homemade chips with salad, something on toast. Batch cook. For lunches I make a different vegetable soup each week depending on what vegetables are on offer.
I think it does help to have herbs and spices which I buy in bulk. I shop on line due to disability but this also means no impulse buying, I can check what I have in and work my menu around that and whats on offer.

If i had to then we could reduce our grocery bill but like many I don't want to make sacrifices. We eat mostly homemade and stick to seasonal veg and offers. I also meal plan. But I love cooking and baking. It isn't always poor planning and impulse buying that causes higher costs. But sometime its expensive and good quality ingredients.

£150- £175 per week on average 2 adults, 1 teen ( adult portions) and 2 primary school children.

Buy organic meat and dairy where possible.

Shop with Ocado and Sainsbury's online.Sometimes Waitrose.

It always amazes me how people with a family of four or five people claim they can shop for their family for £50-£60 per week.

I do not see how it is possible to shop for that little for a family of four of five people eating nutritious and healthy food. Are those who claim that shop for £50/£60 including breakfast items, lunches, dinners and cleaning products and pet food in their shop?

I’m not including any pet food as we don’t have pets, and I’m not including children’s lunches that they get at school/pre school. Also we don’t drink alcohol. But everything else is included.

But we do eat nutritious food. In the past week for dinners we’ve had home made fishcakes, a lasagne that did a couple of days, a curry, jacket potatoes, a slow cooker chicken thing, a chicken stir fry, all of which are served with veg. For lunch, DH and I (we wfh) will have omelettes, scrambled egg on toast, soup, sandwiches, leftovers, jacket potatoes etc.

£130 a week including cleaning stuff and toiletries, no pets and w don't drink alcohol. 2 adults and 2 children 9 and 11. The 2 adults have 5 packed lunches a week and kids usually have schools dinners. Shop at Aldi, Iceland and Home Bargains. On top of that we have 2 meals out or takeaways a week.

Inextremis · 13/11/2025 12:25

In Ireland. 2 adults. At the moment it's €120 a week from Tesco, but that is €20 more than usual to cover things I'm stocking up on for Christmas (wine, Danish Butter Cookies, tubs of chocolate etc.). The only things that get topped up during the week are milk and bread - neither of which I drink/eat, but DH does. We eat very well, I'm retired, so have time to cook everything from scratch, plus I enjoy doing it.

HayleyBean · 13/11/2025 12:25

Family of 2 adults, 1 toddler and a cat and we spend £700-800 a month. Fuck knows how

GrumpyNovember · 13/11/2025 12:26

2a 1 3yr old DD who eats mainly at wraparound care during the week I don't calculate this into the food budget as we would need to use this irrelevant 1 dog.

Difficult as we tend to buy meats in bulk from the butchers but I've calculated we need approximately £80 for all of our basic needs as we do not buy alcohol.

I would budget £100 per week and expect us to be pretty comfortable.

Truthfully we buy as we go so quite difficult!

Could possibly cut it down to £60 per week using frozen veggies of not much variety and no nice extras like broccoli cheese bakes etc but we're comfortable and happy.

Zanzara · 13/11/2025 12:27

I budget £500 a month for two adults. I'm a Coeliac, so some things are more expensive.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 13/11/2025 12:27

2 adults + 2 kids. Realistically £200 a week. With hardly any meat or wine.

Meadowfinch · 13/11/2025 12:33

One adult and one 6' teenage boy who eats an astounding amount of food, I spend about £60 a week, plus I make all our bread, ordering flour separately.

I cook from scratch, don't buy brands or alcohol and think carefully what I buy because I'm on a budget. No allergies or unusual dietary requirements which makes it easier.

chunkyBoo · 13/11/2025 12:39

2 adults and 2 teen children, plus 1 medium size dog and 3 cats. I’ll easily spend £200 in the weekly shop (excluding alcohol, any random bits of household items like socks/glasses, and cleaning products). I’ll likely spend another £40-50 for other items I’ve run out of -forgotten. … it’s scary!!

Changename12 · 13/11/2025 12:39

Pranaon · 13/11/2025 11:47

Australia- 2 adults, 1 teen, 2 dogs
$450 per week - about £200
i make my own bread, dog food, cake, biscuits to save costs. Buy in bulk, batch cook, it’s so time consuming but groceries are eye wateringly expensive.

Interesting to hear from non UK households.

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 13/11/2025 12:40

2 adults, no kids at home, 1 cat.

Our weekly shop is around £300. From Ocado, mostly organic, mostly stuff we cook from scratch. Includes about 4 bottles of wine.

I have people coming to stay later in November and that shop is booked and is currently £400. That's for dinner on a Friday, lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday lunch with lots of sides.

We also spend about £300 - £400 a month on dinner in restaurants or takeaways.

OutandAboutMum1821 · 13/11/2025 12:40

Usually around £80 (2 adults and 2 children), max £100 (if hosting dinner for others, etc).

Changename12 · 13/11/2025 12:43

UK, 2 adults and grandchildren who stay for a couple of dinners a week - well over £200. We also eat out about once a week. On the plus side we eat about 2 take always a year.

RoachFish · 13/11/2025 12:47

Sweden - £60/week - 2 adults. We don't eat meat but buy good quality food.

HarrietofFire · 13/11/2025 12:55

2 adults about £80 per week including alcohol. Neither of us eat fruit so that saves a lot.

largeredformeplease · 13/11/2025 13:03

I thought I was bad but seem to be on cheaper end here.

2 adults, 2 kids, 2 cats. Some weeks around £120, some weeks £90-100.

which seems much less than some.

that includes toiletries and cleaning stuff, but no alcohol. Usually shop at Lidl and go to Sainsbury’s on the weeks we need a bigger shop (better choice of hair products etc).

Dontknowwhattocall13893 · 13/11/2025 13:07

2 adults 1 two year old.
About 70 to 80 including top up shops
But my husband doesn't eat lunch and my toddler eats that at nursery so it's only dinners and my lunches which is either leftovers (if there are any) or a sandwich.
We don't really drink at home so don't spend on that.

ThatKhakiLeader · 13/11/2025 13:08

Family of 7 with one pet and ive just done my shop at aldi. Spent £158. I have 9 dinners planned out of that.
Il top up during the week with milk and fresh bread.
Id say the maximum we spend a week is £180.

Even when I do a big shop when im literally out of everything I never spend more than £200/£220.
