What cream will help me? Urgent

I’m in hospital after an operation that’s gone very wrong. I’m having daily dressing changes and I’m highly allergic to the adhesive of the dressings. I’ve asked for a barrier cream but it needs to be prescribed and it’s been 3 days and no one has done it so I’m going to send DH with a list of things to buy today. Please help me. The scratches are where the skin has actually come away when they changed the dressing.

My treatment has been really hit and miss. This feels like the last thing in a string of shit things. For example; I’m on antipsychotics and a really potent antidepressant (venlafaxine) that needs to be taken on time every day and if you miss it even by an hour you start withdrawal. The pharmacist came to see me and removed my own supply of medication as it’s high risk for od, fine whatever. Then that night the night nurse couldn’t find the medication and ‘didn’t have time’ to chase it up so just didn’t give it to me, meaning I started withdrawing from my medication. I had surgery the next day and when I came back I asked if the day nurse had managed to order the medication so I don’t have to continue withdrawing and she said ’oh this? Yeah it’s been in the drugs trolley since yesterday don’t know why you didn’t get it last night’ I just burst into tears.

anyway!! Rash !! Please help !

Metanium nappy rash/barrier cream (has a baby on the tube), zinc oxide barrier cream, sudocrem.

Sudocrem is great to slather on thickly, but is scented so if you're sensitive, avoid. Nappy rash creams are great if nothing else as they're very delicate on sore skin.

Keep the area really dry and with fresh air if possible.

I would consider getting him to buy some different tapes and dressings and asking to use them. They should be providing an alternative at the hospital but they sound a bit shit.

Sorry you've had such a shit time, is your DH able to come in and do some advocating/getting them to sort you out?

@FullOfMomsensethank you. Yes he is doing his best, he’s sending his parents today to come and see me and have a chat with the drs as they’re medics and understand the process. I know I need to be here it’s just so crap that surgeons are just focused on the surgery bit and not seeing the whole picture? Crap

Would standard petroleum jelly help?

Interested in this thread?

Try this, it's what my mum got from the hospital for her stoma bag, where it made her sore:

I hoping this attaches. I hadn’t thought about Vaseline thank you!

The only thing that worked for me for this was hydrocortisone. I was also changed to a different dressing type, but the hydrocortisone is what stopped the insane itching. I'd check it's OK to use first though.

RashyMcRash · 08/11/2025 12:11

The photos have been approved now. I’ve begged for some cream and the nurse today said the drs should prescribe it. DH has got e45, aveeno, diprobase & sudocrem. I really hope one of them works 😭 it’s so sore

Any further ideas ?

I am allergic to dressing adhesive. I am also sensitive to petroleum jelly.

my kids are too, nappy rash was horrific, and only worsened with Vaseline etc.

my top products:

burts bees- beeswax based. Their nappy cream is very thick and stays put.

neals yard- olive oil based. Again nappy/barrier creams are excellent.

lanolin (sheep’s wool) is also excellent.

basically try anything that isn’t petroleum based- which is most of your high street brands.

TomatoSandwiches · 08/11/2025 14:25

They used nappy cream mixed with vaseline for DSs reaction, they sometimes use medical honey which seems to work faster.

Munchyseeds2 · 08/11/2025 14:30

Derma s barrier cream?
It's shit that no one in the hospital is sorting it out for you and that you didn't get your medication.
If there's ever a next time keep a few pills tucked away in your bag!

Greenscheesecake · 08/11/2025 17:29

I would go for medihoney cream, available over the counter.

BarilynBordeaux · 08/11/2025 17:44

Oh bless you, diprobase sorted a similar rash of mine out, then Lush Ultrabalm for healing after it had calmed. The beeswax in it was a great barrier.

foodtoorder · 08/11/2025 17:49

Derma-s spray barrier film or lollies.
They should have that or very similar product on the ward like eg cavilon

sherbertcandy · 08/11/2025 17:53

Not sure if this might help but our colostomy users use calamine lotion and let it dry then apply dressings over. This is what we use for dressings etc. You can get barrier wipes though through amazon etc

Ooh that’s really handy to know ! Thank you! It hurts a lot and the dressings need changing every day as the drain is leaking

Thank you for the ideas! I feel less alone!

I use Derma S spray on my little boy's stoma site and on his pressure areas. Cavilon wands are good too.

Yabbadabbadooooooo · 08/11/2025 23:00

Antihistamine if it’s an allergy

Hollyhobbi · 10/11/2025 23:52

Have you had a thyroidectomy or a parathyroidectomy?

Hollyhobbi · 10/11/2025 23:52

Have you had a thyroidectomy or a parathyroidectomy?

Total thyroidectomy with a failed drain so emergency surgery 24 hours later to fit a second drain. Then it was removed and I was sent home for 5 days then I developed a seroma and a neck abscess so needed yet another operation to fit a 3rd drain, currently still in hospital having daily dressing changes because the drain will only work if in a specific position and it leaks a bit. Also on iv antibiotics to deal with the sepsis and abscess

I react like that OP so you have my sympathies, I also have psoriasis and sometimes eczema so I know various creams well.

The best thing I have found for a reaction like that is soap. Not any old soap, and I'm sure you have just gone, "Uhg, not soap that will hurt like hell" it is lard soap that my carer makes.

The lard isn't present in the finished soap but it is incredible moisturising.

He hasn't made any for a while so I can't offer to send you any but a quick google shows Etsy has some similar.
