If you've even been to a wreath making lesson:

  • Have you ever made a wreath since?
  • Would you recommend a lesson or just look on youtube?
  • Did you go with friends/family or on your own?

I've moved to a new area and saw a wreath making lesson advertised. I'd be going on my own, but wondering if it would be worth it? I've never bothered with a wreath previously, because I lived on a high street where it would have been stolen, but my new house would be fine. Any other thoughts appreciated.

Following as I'm doing the same thing myself this year. The local florist does it every year, first time I've had the courage to go!

ohtowinthelottery · 07/11/2025 20:10

I've been to 3 different ones over 3 years. I've never made a wreath at home by myself since.
The 1st one was at a posh hotel and included afternoon tea after the session. I went with 2 friends. The 2nd one was at a local garden centre. I went by myself but knew people when I got there. The 3rd one was in a neighbouring village hall with the session being run by a local florist. I booked with a friend and we didn't know anyone else there but everyone was very friendly.

I love that everything was provided on the ones I went to, so no need to go foraging for greenery and having to buy other bits. It's quite expensive though.

Billybagpuss · 07/11/2025 20:12

I went to one a few years ago when my friend was setting up a florist shop so being supportive. I dismantled it after Christmas and kept the bits and have made one every year since.

I did one previously, I did actually make my own wreath (and one for my mother in law) after that. It did work out fairly expensive to get the necessary bits myself - I imagine it would be cheaper if you're buying in bulk.

Don't underestimate the mess it makes either - I'd pay £50
not to have to clean my kitchen up afterwards.

Blarn · 07/11/2025 20:15

I went to one last year with my mum. We made our own willow wreaths and then decorated them. I stored the wreath the decorate this year.

Jellicoo · 07/11/2025 20:15

It's a nice activity, but I buy wreaths. I don't have a holly bush in my garden anymore and I have enough else to do in early Dec without adding scavenging for holly to the list.

You're mainly paying for the experience, the "niceness" that it's home made, and for them gathering all the materials for you, which takes time and energy. All perfectly good things for you to spend your money if you wish. I would say nearly everyone went with friends but that doesn't mean you have to.

Screamingabdabz · 07/11/2025 20:17

I’ve been a few times. Went to one hosted by a florist and went with a couple of workmates (we went for a meal afterwards as an alternative to a Christmas do). There were other women there who had come on their own.

We all had a glass of bubbly or cup of tea and everyone chatted around the table as we made them. I wasn’t very good at it so have never bothered to do my own but they still end up looking good and smell great even if you’re not very precise with it. I’d recommend it.

Madcats · 07/11/2025 20:23

I did a charity one a couple of years ago (knowing nobody, but very few others did either- cake and drinks helped our creativity) and am definitely going to book another one this year.

I don’t think you can underestimate the amount of “stuff” that goes into a proper wreath versus one made of Christmas tree branches.

I've been to the same one the past few years. It's more expensive but it's in a beautiful old mansion owned by the florist, she supplies a lot of stuff from her own garden and has a huge choice of things to put on the wreath. She provides fizz and loads of delicious home made canapes. She teaches well in a small group so it would be possible to do it again myself and I have plenty of stuff in my garden.
But I go with my DiL and it's become a bit of a Christmas thing for us. Most people go with someone but I can't see it being at all difficult to go on your own.

carbonelthecat · 07/11/2025 20:26

I did one a few years ago - it really didn’t cost any more than buying a premium fresh wreath so it was a nice to do. I’ve not made one since!

NoodleHorses · 07/11/2025 20:31

I have been to two now. Both times when I moved somewhere new and I met nice folks and drank tea. First one was about £15, the second one was around 3 years ago, it was £35 and included a nice lunch. Both times all equipment was provided.
I used my wreath base to make new wreaths in following years. I live in the countryside so loads of holly, ivy, fur trees, cones and whatnot.

EngineerIngHappiness · 07/11/2025 20:33

My friend did it and kept her wreath up for six months. Seems an enjoyable activity.

ResusciAnnie · 07/11/2025 20:35

I went to one, outdoors in December (forest school vibes, but adults), with 2 friends. Was freeeeezing and all the foliage was frozen. Nice though. No I haven’t made a wreath since. IMO you should just look on YouTube - it’s something you go to with friends generally, so everyone else will be there with someone they know, and for me that would make me feel really sad 😆

Freebus · 07/11/2025 20:45

I went to one with a friend, but have been to other craft things on my own.

Yes I do try to make a wreath every year now. Last year I got a £3 wreath base from Hobbycraft and that worked well. I get foliage from the garden and have got a few bits of decor.

Costs vary a lot with these workshops - some round my way are daylight Robbery!

Chewbecca · 07/11/2025 20:47

I have, more than once. Never done it at home.
It's more a nice crafty social occasion with an outcome.

Put down a tarp before you start. Makes cleanup much easier.

I'm shit at wreaths. Fabulous at Christmas pots with calendar candles. Don't know what they're called in English?

lurvy · 07/11/2025 20:53

I went to one with my daughter a couple of years ago. I haven't made one since and I don't think I will. It was fun to do together though.

Cat1504 · 07/11/2025 20:55

I do it every year ….my friend hosts and her DD ( who used to work at Lush and made loads of wreaths there over the christmas season) taught us all the top tips…..we are now just as good as her DD at making wreaths so don’t actually need any guidance now! …..it’s a lovely evening……we all take foliage and decoration eg ribbons and then pool it and share….when we finished we have food and drink and dance to Christmas songs…..then we have have a group photo with out finished wreaths …..it costs nothing for the wreaths as we reuse out wreaths bases …..get foliage from all our gardens and reuse our ribbons etc….the only thing we’ve ever had to buy was twine but now have a massive spool of this which will last a few more years

roshi42 · 07/11/2025 21:26

I’ve been a couple of times as an activity rather than a learning experience. You could make your own after, the theory isn’t hard, but the economies of scale in buying foliage & moss… I reckon you’d still need to do it in a group. And I just wouldn’t bother on my own. But a wreath making evening in a pub once a year is quite fun!

Appletree56 · 07/11/2025 21:34

I go to one every year, nice evening with friends, there are usually mince pies and mulled wine, which is a bonus.

Also rather than using it is a door ornament, I put it flat on a window sill with a candle in the middle, more like a table decoration I suppose.

Could be a opportunity for you to meet people in your new area.

CrushingOnRubies · 07/11/2025 21:43

i have been to wreath making workshops. I have also done my own from scratch at home. However what I have done in recent years I get quite a bare one from Lidl for £10 and then embellished that with extras. I find adding the base greenery a bit of a faff.

SparklyCardigan · 07/11/2025 21:48

I enjoyed the workshop but no, I've never made a wreath since! I would definitely recommend a workshop as it was fun and you get all the materials supplied and hopefully a bit of guidance on what looks good.
I went with friends but I would happily go to something like this again on my own (as I have done for other workshops).

IndiaAutumn · 07/11/2025 21:51

I make wreaths every year. Really like doing them
only from things I have foraged or have in the garden. Getting the base right is the most important bit and the biggest faff.

FinallyHere · 07/11/2025 21:51

I’m a big fan, love them. Have only really produced a freehand version on the coffee table as part of Christmas decorations because I tend to do one a year. Lovely start to Christmas for me, especially when all the lovely wreaths have sold old by the time I get round to it.

mazedasamarchhare · 07/11/2025 21:59

Yes did a national trust one years ago. Went on my own, made a lovely friend (a decade on still very good friends) now make my own Christmas and Easter wreaths every year.
