People who buy clothes, wear them, then return for a refund

What type of repulsive person does this?

I have just received a jacket I ordered online. The jacket itself is perfect but on trying it on I noticed that the pockets were unstitched and upon checking I could see they had been unpicked, there were creases in the lining where someone had been sitting down and a few marks on a shoulder. It has an attached label but it is hanging inside. It also faintly smells of perfume.

Clearly someone bought it, wore it and returned for a refund.

I think that's really disgusting and it rather turns my stomach. Of course the retailer should check before accepting returns but clearly they don't if it superficially looks fine. The retailer was of course very apologetic and is sending another by next day delivery, but said I should write on the returns label what has happened in case it just goes back into normal returns at the warehouse.

Has anyone on here ever worn and returned something and if so, why do you think that's acceptable?

I wouldn’t do this but I just think it’s pretty cheeky rather than disgusting. Unless it’s underwear

GehenSieweiter · 06/11/2025 13:11

Peak entitlement people do that.
I knew a smoker who used to do that, utterly vile.

scienceteachersarefun · 06/11/2025 13:12

I know someone who did that with a dress they got married in. I thought it was unbelievable.

I know people that do this. Wear something for an event and then take back.
Strange.

IamIfeel · 06/11/2025 13:23

Absolutely gross, tacky and embarrassing.

It's also the reason retailers are starting to have much stricter returns policies, meaning people get refused returns sometimes. I am praying Next don't start that as I'd be screwed with it being one of the few retailers it's convenient for me to use (live very rural).

Silverbirchleaf · 06/11/2025 13:36

I think that’s awful too. Mind you, the clothes retailers should be stricter also on checking returned clothes before issuing refunds.

ReturnsAdministrator · 06/11/2025 13:39

Yes, unfortunately it’s very common.
I have to refuse returns multiple times a week because of this.
People don’t seem to realise that returns are put back to stock.
I had one customer trying to tell me that it didn’t matter because returns went in the bin. She couldn’t grasp that if companies binned all the returns they would soon go out of business.

Me too, wonder if it's the same person 🤣

MineisanAperol · 06/11/2025 13:41

I’m amazed the first reply doesn’t think it disgusting!! It’s worn unwashed clothing!

SushiForMe · 06/11/2025 13:44

I once saw a woman arguing with the staff at M&S as she wanted to return a (clearly worn) item if clothing. It was just embarrassing, I always wonder who would be shameless enough to do that.

I saw similar a few weeks ago in M&S. The woman insisted on seeing a supervisor, who backed up the member of staff. They actually handled it very well, managing to be polite but not taking any shit😅

RaraRachael · 06/11/2025 13:49

XH's auntie was the OW to a married man. He would take her out, buy her an expensive dress, she'd wear it once to go to something with him then take it back and pocket the cash refund.

He was old and a bit forgetful so would never ask her why he hadn't seen her wearing a particular dress he'd bought for her.

FullOfMomsense · 06/11/2025 13:51

Repulsive? Bit much 😂😂 It's weird but not disgusting!

pottylolly · 06/11/2025 13:53

You have no idea why something was returned. For example I returned a Ted Baker coat I bought because lint kept falling out of the pockets the first time I wore it. Ted Baker said it was faulty as it wasn’t stiched properly. But I’m certain other retailers they probably would have tried selling it at the ‘unworn’ full price.

RollyPollyBatFace · 06/11/2025 13:54

I can still recall, back in the 90s, buying a little handbag from Chelsea Girl. I’d been using it for a good few weeks before I had need to unzip the inner pocket in it .

was somewhat taken aback to discover a used - yes USED - sanitary towel rolled up in there

2GreatFatSquirrels · 06/11/2025 13:57

I remember when I worked at Debenhams we had someone come in and return an item without a receipt, I refused it but my arse of a manager took their side and allowed the return because the tag was still on.

I later searched the code on the tag to discover it was purchased in 2003. The current year was 2013…

DarkNovemberBringsTheFog · 06/11/2025 14:01

This is why some evening dresses have the tag attached to the outside side seam partway down the hip. It would be obvious when it’s being worn.

Evening dresses are more likely only to be worn once, I understand.

Also how much of a waste would that be!

Northernladdette · 06/11/2025 14:06

Surely it’s down to the company for not checking the returns?

MoominMai · 06/11/2025 14:21

@Buxusmortus this has always been my fear with returning unsuitable clothing tbh that eg if something is too tight or baggy you just immediately take it off and pack it back up you don’t really fully inspect it. Then if a diligent inspector noticed it they’d blame me!

Achewyhamster · 06/11/2025 14:42

My mother does this

Shes minted but tight and has no issues with lying to get her own way

She'll order something, wear it to wherever and return it

Unfortunately for the next poor soul, shes very overweight and sweats a lot

She also refuses to use soap let alone deodorant so she stinks-a lot (she claims shes allergic to all soaps/deodorant/perfume-its not pleasant to stand next to her and also untrue, she just doesnt want to spend money on these items)

As she can't smell herself,she doesn't see a problem

Shes a narcissist and if she says shes not worn it,in her head shes telling the truth

She also tries to claim the item didnt arrive if she really likes something so she gets the refund

It's disgusting and I hope companies clamp down on this as its pushing prices up for genuine customers

pontipinemum · 06/11/2025 14:50

More and more things I am ordering online come with HUGE red tags saying 'returns not accepted without this label' fair enough.

@IamIfeel I live on a farm a decent spin from the shops. Next is good. So is M&S, in Ireland anyway returns are free and the postie collects them from me. I haven't bought anything for a while but Very can be good. Even amazon.

CaminoPlanner · 06/11/2025 14:54

OP, I thought retailers had to mark any returned items as seconds. They can't sell you an item as new if it has been sold to someone else.

I once dashed into M&S to buy a bra, in a real hurry and just grabbed one on a hanger with the right size and cup sticker. When I looked at it properly, I realised it was the wrong size and it was also covered in talcum powder under the arms. When I returned it they tried to refuse giving me money back as they said I had worn it. I had to explain for a very long time that I couldn't wear a bra three cup sizes too small, and even if I could, I wouldn't want one with someone else's sweaty talc all over it! Grim.

AlwaysADramaHadEnough · 06/11/2025 14:54

I got a 5 pack of pants in m&s years ago, and there was a dirty worn pair in them they were very visibly dirty.

No doesn't get marked as seconds it all just goes back on the shop floor. In 3 different high street shops I've worked in
