Are there any foods you like better when they’ve gone a bit stale or past their best?

I prefer stale crumpets toasted, they go hard and crunchy

Same with stale bread, makes nice crunchy toast

Haulage · 04/11/2025 20:56

I always really like takeaways such as pizza, Chinese or Indian food cold the next morning. Not chips though - cold fish and chips would be grim.

Bananas to make banana loaf

chippylips · 04/11/2025 21:01

Wotsits

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 04/11/2025 21:04

Not quite what you asked but I like left over buttered toast that's gone completely cold. Food of the Gods after school run.

Lurkingandlearning · 04/11/2025 21:08

I like over cooked jam doughnuts

cakewitch · 04/11/2025 21:10

Stale wine gums.

Instinct1 · 04/11/2025 21:14

Rivita Crackerbread when they go soggy and chewy.

imadeitnice · 04/11/2025 21:16

Crumpets cooked in the air fryer go nice & crunchy!
Stale sour dough bread make excellent toast.

On the rare occasions when we order pizza, we deliberately order too much, just so that we can enjoy day-old cold pizza the following day. So nice! (But it mustn’t be kept in the fridge overnight. Then it just goes rubbery and stodgy.)

Cheese is often better well after the the Best By date, eg Brie (runny and gorgeous) or sliced Continental cheese such as Emmental or Jarslberg (if you microwave a dried out slice, it swells up into a crunchy cheese puff).

I didn’t know that Jaffa Cakes were actually soft spongecakes until I went to university. For some reason, when we were children they were always crunchy. Stale, obviously, but I don’t know why. The first time I had a Jaffa Cake fresh from the packet, I thought there was something wrong with it! Lovely as they are, fresh, I still occasionally leave one out to enjoy stale, for the happy memories.

this is very important information and I can’t believe no one told me before

Sunshineismyfavourite · 04/11/2025 21:24

I love fruits that are really ripe - too ripe really! A peach that has a crunch when you eat it is grim - same as a nectarine or a pear. I will only eat them when they start to go a bit wrinkly and if the pear stalk is falling out then I know it's ready!

WishIcouldhelphim · 04/11/2025 21:26

Yes haribo sweets! Or the squashies sweets, always better if the pack has been left open a while and they go a bit stiff!

spookyscaryseagulls · 04/11/2025 21:28

Blackberries when the start going squishy.

Seaforme · 04/11/2025 21:29

Poppadoms the day after a take away curry. Love them, slightly bendy and delicious.

MsSmartShoes · 04/11/2025 21:29

Grim.
I might eat a stale baguette resurrected in the oven, but I’d prefer fresh every time.

It’s got to be properly dried out and looking unfit to eat. You know how it goes a darker yellow, curls slightly and looks sort of dry and greasy at the same time. About 15-20s on full power IIRC.

Nearly this but I like it so it goes cold and slightly chewy, and then I put very thick cold butter on it. Delish.

It's not what you asked though I know..

Top info above re cheese puff jarlsburg

I love cold fish and chips! Would not eat any other leftover takeaway the day after

flumpyschmumpy · 04/11/2025 21:35

FLUMPS!! We have had flumps at Christmas for as long as I remember, and we realised that if we left the lid off the texture would be so much more satisfying. Now my folks deliberately leave the lid off for a couple of weeks beforehand - we call this the maturing of the flump 😂😂

Thesummer · 04/11/2025 21:40

I used to love flat Coke, still occasionally do.

Ginger nut biscuits when they go a bit soft
