Are there any foods you like better when they’ve gone a bit stale or past their best?

I like Jaffa cakes better when they’ve gone a have been open a few days and gone a bit stale and the sponge is harder.

I can’t think of anything I particularly like that’s stale, but I am very partial to a slice of ever so slightly burnt toast with loads of salty butter, and if I’m feeling decadent a slither of Vegemite and grated cheese.

FLUMPS!! We have had flumps at Christmas for as long as I remember, and we realised that if we left the lid off the texture would be so much more satisfying. Now my folks deliberately leave the lid off for a couple of weeks beforehand - we call this the maturing of the flump 😂😂

😂

A very long time ago I saw Delia Smith on telly talking about the horrors of what she called ‘wangy toast’. I’m a wangy toast eater and I prefer to butter mine once it’s cold.

Wotsits

Just came on to say this!

Heretone · 04/11/2025 21:56

Another one here to say wotsits. I open pack 48 hours before eating them for maximum chew.

On the rare occasions when we order pizza, we deliberately order too much, just so that we can enjoy day-old cold pizza the following day. So nice! (But it mustn’t be kept in the fridge overnight. Then it just goes rubbery and stodgy.)

Cheese is often better well after the the Best By date, eg Brie (runny and gorgeous) or sliced Continental cheese such as Emmental or Jarslberg (if you microwave a dried out slice, it swells up into a crunchy cheese puff).

I didn’t know that Jaffa Cakes were actually soft spongecakes until I went to university. For some reason, when we were children they were always crunchy. Stale, obviously, but I don’t know why. The first time I had a Jaffa Cake fresh from the packet, I thought there was something wrong with it! Lovely as they are, fresh, I still occasionally leave one out to enjoy stale, for the happy memories.

I will have to try that with the cheese. My Dad loves blue Stilton especially when it’s going mouldy. He used to have some after Sunday dinner and chase us to make us smell it! Happy days.

Jaffa Cakes

Poppadoms the day after a take away curry. Love them, slightly bendy and delicious.

Oh yes! 😋

TheGrimSmile · 04/11/2025 22:16

Sorry, didn't read your full OP to see that you'd already said Jaffa Cakes.

FancyCatSlave · 04/11/2025 22:19

I like really overdone chicken so it goes hard and splintery, wings especially. But reheated chicken breast works too. I know it’s a bit weird.

halfandhalfchipsandrice · 04/11/2025 22:21

I like crisps that have hardened a bit so I put them in the freezer once opened (if there's room).

Onekidnoclue · 04/11/2025 22:21

Prawn crackers! Sadly I can’t leave them uneaten long enough for them to suitably mature 😭

Inwhitelights · 04/11/2025 22:23

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 04/11/2025 21:04

Not quite what you asked but I like left over buttered toast that's gone completely cold. Food of the Gods after school run.

That’s “tuggy toast’ that is! 😂

Crumpets cooked in the air fryer go nice & crunchy!
Stale sour dough bread make excellent toast.

I'm going to try my crumpets in the air fryer.

I agree about the sourdough toast..last time I scraped all the inside of my mouth though cos it was so hard and crunchy. Nice though

wendywoopywoo222 · 04/11/2025 22:27

I love old cheese when it’s gone hard on the sides and maybe a little bit of mould.

OvenChick · 04/11/2025 22:27

Another flat Coke lover, preferably room temperature.

I also agree with a lot of others on this thread - very ripe fruit, prawn crackers, popadoms, cold pizza the next day.

Purplefoo · 04/11/2025 22:27

Sponge cake - particularly Victoria sponge (as long as not fresh cream!)

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 04/11/2025 23:14

Cheese sandwich that has been cut into triangles and left out. I love when the pointy bit starts to curl, that’s when you know it’ll be good 😋

Sgtmajormummy · 04/11/2025 23:26

I go wild for those overcooked crisps you occasionally find in a packet, or ones made from potato peel. The DC used to fish them out for me.
Or the chip shop chip that’s gone through the deep fat fryer twice. A chrysalis of its former self.
The shattering blackened corners of lasagne sheets.
Or risotto stuck to the bottom of the pot.

softlyfallsthesnow · 04/11/2025 23:45

I leave the ginger biscuit packet open so that the top one goes a bit soft. Eat that one and the next one takes its place.

FazeleysRoyale · 05/11/2025 13:22

Flat coke - absolutely.

I like chocolate with that white bloom on it ( cocoa butter crystals ?) as the texture seems different and better. Someone I used to work with would store any chocolate she had been given on top of her microwave oven then bring it in for me once it had gone partly white ( she didn’t eat any chocolate herself so I was doing her a favour ).

I also like previously melted chocolate that has been re- hardened in the fridge.

I prefer roast meats cold over the next few days. Curries also improve after the event.

FazeleysRoyale · 05/11/2025 13:26

Cold pizza is also very good.

Not stale as such but I do like the little balls of the crisp flavouring that you occasionally find in a packet of crisps. Very salty tasting and intense. Like nibbling a stock cube ( I may have done this)

mustytrusty · 05/11/2025 13:51

Jaffa cakes. I like the base crunchy.

You’ve clearly got good taste!

I love cold meat the next day after a roast especially beef, with chips, the leftover gravy heated up and pickled onions. One of my very favourite meals.
