I don't want to pay more fucking tax!

1000 replies

marthainthemarket · 04/11/2025 14:17

I am the sole earner in a family of four, earning just under 40k a year and getting probably fuck all or below inflation pay increase next year, if I am lucky enough to keep my job ( public sector and employer needing to make massive budget savings). I barely cope now.

I am so fucking angry that Labour fucked up the disability benefit cuts. Other countries don't have run away disability benefits crises because they have a proper assessment process that means they keep a lid on people getting disability benefits who don't really need them. But instead of dealing with that, they came up with a crap proposed cut that wouldn't have dealt with the actual issues and they couldn't defend.

And having fucked that up they are now raising everyone's tax. I hate them!

How many times does it have to be spelled out! AT NO POINT HAVE I SAID THAT A DIAGNOSIS IS REQUIRED FOR BENEFITS OR IN FACT LEADS TO BENEFITS

You may not have said it, but that is exactly what you are implying. Evidenced by the replies you are getting which are correcting you.

Brmmmn · 04/11/2025 19:36

MarriedAtFirstFright · 04/11/2025 19:33

Again, you are confusing the issues of diagnosis and disability benefits. You have to have a stack of medical evidence for a successful PIP claim. Assessments from NHS consultants, GPs, hospitals etc. Without it, you have no chance of being awarded PIP. Surely you can’t believe that this evidence is given out easily either?

People claiming it’s so easy to get disability benefits have clearly never been through the system. It is humiliating and degrading and often takes appeals and years to get. People are delusional if they think it’s so easy.

I learnt a lot after coming on mn. I realised and accepted I was wrong

Meadowfinch · 04/11/2025 19:36

I'm a single mum, paying for DS, paying my bills and mortgage. Working full time. Things are very tight.

I am willing to pay a bit extra to the parish council to support the local youth club and offer them facilities that they currently lack. I also give them my spare time and make food for the dcs during the school holidays. We do litter picks and pot hole surveys and cut back vegetation from road signs because the borough council has no money for such things.

I absolutely resent paying another farthing to the useless wasters in Downing Street who are intent of throwing money at anyone except British citizens who need it. I will do anything to get rid of this govt. They are pathetic.

I dont think you do.

What pay 50%? Short of showing you my payslip you can think what you like.

HorsesDuvets · 04/11/2025 19:38

The welfare bill needs cutting dramatically before taxes on work rise yet again.

Absolutely scandalous to think that Labour used to be the party of working people.

Kirbert2 · 04/11/2025 19:38

mumsnit1 · 04/11/2025 19:27

You have made a huge rash of assumptions. Firstly at no point have I said you need a diagnosis to get PIP, I have merely observed the ease of getting a diagnosis from some private practitioners. My point was to illustrate that the 'medical evidence' that you are so keen to trumpet is not necessarily that hard to obtain. The idea that all 'medical evidence' is somehow infallible and based on robust assessments is inaccurate.

Not all medical evidence is viewed equally. For example, they will be more interested in evidence from a specialist than a GP.

If you only have a bit of evidence from a GP, it's very possible that you will be turned down.

The RMT union has accepted a three-year inflation-plus pay deal for London Underground workers, ending the dispute that led to travel chaos in London in September and increasing drivers’ pay to nearly £80,000 by 2027.

The deal, with an initial 3.4% increase backdated to this April, means LondonUnderground staff pay will rise in line with RPI inflation – higher than the CPI rate normally used for index-linked pay rises – with guaranteed minimum rates if inflation falls, making the total deal worth at least 9.2%.

The RMT said it would seek similar increases across the transport sector, ascribing its success to a week of strikes two months ago that caused widespread disruption in the capital.

The offer still needs to be formally accepted by the other unions: Aslef, Unite and TSSA, but none are expected to object.

Oh grow up. People want more and more services for less and less tax.

This.

I know that if Corbyn’s party, or The Greens were ever to be elected, taxes would rise… but services would improve massively. People don’t think that far forward though, they just see the tax rise.

I dread Reform being in power because services would be sold off/slashed/privatised, a little like the Thatcher government did, which we are still suffering because of.

Paying tax to keep your country running is something to be proud of, and if the richest in our society felt like that, then taxes could probably be lowered, as everyone would be paying their fair share.

My son and his family live in Stockholm. Pay higher tax but have better healthcare, maternity/paternity care/education, and pay/public transport, and subsidised housing. They just wouldn’t have the same quality of life here.

What annoys me more than anything is instead of pissing making their own minds up, they test the public with all these ideas, wind everyone up, cause uncertainty which means businesses like mine struggle all because they don’t have the bloody stones to just say ‘this is what we’re doing and here’s why’.

I blame the media too.

And of course when it does come out it’s not as bad as what was speculated meaning we’re all oh so fucking grateful. It’s so transparently bullshit.

Im just on one today.

There is no pay bracket that has 50% of your salary go out in income tax.

And the RMT campaigned for Brexit, which had decimated public - and personal -finances.

WhatAreYouOnAboutF · 04/11/2025 19:43

You could argue that more people here means more money earned and into the pot.

Don't be silly. It's not exponential in that way because when you are dealing with such vast numbers you will have loads that are non-contributing members of society but still placing a demand on the services. The unemployed use the NHS just as much as the employed. It's basic numbers. It's not just the NHS; it affects everything. You need more school places for more children; more GP slots for more children - and it is true that it is far more common in some foreign cultures to have 3+ children than it is typical for the statistical 2.2 of old for white British domestic population. So in that set up you may have a family of 6 with one or two income producers at most but an incremental drain on public services across the board.

Over population is a huge huge problem for public services and need for more tax and not one of the mainstream political parties is even touching this.

Happyjoe · 04/11/2025 19:33

Benefit cheats, though should be stopped, is such a small amount of the total benefit costs.
The NHS, schools etc are all suffering because of cuts under 'austerity'. Something that's been proven not to work.

I don’t think it’s a small cost at all.
when you work in the public sector you see them everywhere.

Eastie77Returns · 04/11/2025 19:44

I currently pay 45% additional rate income tax and I'm just resigned to paying more Obviously I'm fortunate and beyond grateful that I'm a higher earner and I'm not pleading poverty. However I do feel annoyed that I pay a lot of tax and do not really benefit from great public services. I can't get an appointment with my GP in a timely fashion so I use private medical care. Ditto for dental care. The nine dentists closest to me are not accepting new NHS patients or are only "taking new NHS patients for specialist dental care by referral". So I take DC to a private dentist. Our council has reduced bin collections to twice a month.

It's just all a load of shit really.

Hons123 · 04/11/2025 19:45

So it is the disability benefits? Nothing to do with anything else?

Yes, tax has been made a dirty word in the UK. And yes, remember Norway, high tax but man, everything worked and worked very well. Schools were good, free sports, even clearing the snow off the roads overnight, night after night so people could get to work.. amazing. Couldn't imagine that here!

Tax shouldn't be an issue, how it is spent (or stolen by the few rich ones) is the issue.

No you’re right. 45% my bad. But loss of the non taxable income means it’s about 50%

Million more people are now claiming universal credit compared to a year ago which increases the welfare bill further. Crazy times.

Because there is no point workingbat all or full time. There isn't much difference in your bank balance and you get many discounts on top of universal credit. Every year we are getting punished for working.
