How much would you be willing to pay towards your work Christmas party?

Assuming your company doesn’t pay for it. What would be the limit before you start thinking you won’t bother?

I was £60 for this years I don’t think I would do more than £80

MumChp · 03/11/2025 12:05

I don't join after the price went +£20.
No, thank you.

HollyhockDays · 03/11/2025 12:05

Nothing. I hate them. My sisters was on a Saturday last year. I would have refused to go!!

Chasingsquirrels · 03/11/2025 12:05

Ours is fully paid by my employer, including a +1, and I often don't bother.

If I wanted to go, basing on some sort of Christmas meal, I'd say £40-£50 ph plus drinks.

JustReacher · 03/11/2025 12:06

I wouldn't be willing to pay anything. It's either a paid for event or I'm not going.

Hellzbellz25 · 03/11/2025 12:06

I’d pay not to go!

FuzzyWolf · 03/11/2025 12:06

If you are including travel as well then probably no more than £150.

ResusciAnnie · 03/11/2025 12:06

I was gonna say £20 but I’ve always been self employed so clearly out of touch as no Xmas parties for me 😂 I guess if I got on with my colleagues well I’d see it more as going out for dinner with pals - for which I’d pay up to £80 without even thinking about it. IMO if it’s a work Xmas party then work should pay surely?

IsItWickedNotToCare · 03/11/2025 12:07

We don't get one, just a meal out where you pay for your own dinner.... I'm only going cos it's a cheap one this year and only £4 deposit.

Stormwhatnow · 03/11/2025 12:07

Absolutely nothing. I've never had to pay for a work Christmas do and if I did I just wouldn't attend, I'd rather spend the money on a night out with friends.

Outnumbered1983 · 03/11/2025 12:07

I work part time and don’t really know my colleagues that’s well (there was a restructure of office space and we were given 3 hot desks for a team of 15 people, so everyone home works and holds meeting via teams). I wouldn’t join in for more than £30 really, money is tight and I’d rather spend ot on my loved ones.

KeenDog · 03/11/2025 12:08

0 pounds

Blimey, I was going to say £20-25 if there was at least a disco and stuff.Grin

EleanorReally · 03/11/2025 12:12

i dont go - the price is more than £25 i think

MaplePumpkin · 03/11/2025 12:13

I work in a school so we have to pay for everything ourselves. I love my colleagues though and always have a fab time at our Christmas do. We usually go somewhere where you pay £40 for a table, meal and entertainment. Drinks and taxis on top of that I probably spend about £100. Last year as well as our main do, a few of us also did a festive murder mystery night that cost another £50.

Edinburghdaze · 03/11/2025 12:15

Working for the NHS nothing is paid for so it depends how much I like my colleagues. When they are pals I’d pay around £50 but if not pals I don’t go or just go if it’s a cheap meal around £20.

Okiedokie123 · 03/11/2025 12:16

Work paying for such things use depend on where you work. If my work paid that would mean the tax payer was paying…. So we pay ourselves or don’t go.
Ours is about £37

MiddleAgedDread · 03/11/2025 12:16

ours is paid for and I'm still not going!
I think at that time of year it's difficult to find anywhere for a group with a sit down meal for less than maybe £40pp, plus drinks, any travel etc. Nah, i don't like my colleagues that much, would rather spend the money on going out with friends & family to somewhere I've chosen.

senua · 03/11/2025 12:20

It also depends on the venue and type of party. I'm more likely to pay for something that I'd actually enjoy!

So how would that work with the nearly 20% of the workforce that are employed by the public sector? 6.12 million x £50 per head = £306 million pounds- do you think that's a good use of public taxes?

I'm wondering if some of the people here have left their houses in the last decade. You'd struggle to get change for a 3 course meal and drink for £20 in mcdonalds!

I'd say maybe £50.

Theonewhogotthecake · 03/11/2025 12:32

£60 paid by me. I’m NHS

Blanketfull · 03/11/2025 12:36

£60, if drinks are included.

I think the usual sit down meal followed by dancing needs a review. It's too expensive now.

passthebiscuittins · 03/11/2025 12:38

If it was an organised thing by the employer I wouldn’t be happy to pay anything at all tbh.

GameOfJones · 03/11/2025 12:42

Ours is £20 a ticket which includes a buffet and a disco, we pay for our own drinks. I don't think I'm going to go this year.....my work colleagues are fine but they're not my friends so I'd rather be at home to be honest or if out and spending money then to be with the people I'm choosing to hang out with.

mindutopia · 03/11/2025 12:42

The only time I ever paid, I think it was like £18 for a set menu (plus extra for drinks at the bar).

Honestly, I think if a company is having a Christmas party, it should be funded by the company, not by staff. Though I appreciate this doesn’t work for, say, the NHS, but I do think it’s appropriate for most organisations including third sector ones.

We have a party for our staff. We’re a small company. It’s a night away with an activity, dinner, drinks, taxis, hotel and breakfast the next morning fully paid for all employees. They also aren’t expected to work that day so get the day off work fully paid. Even if someone couldn’t come for whatever reason, they wouldn’t be expected to work that day.

If you want your people to feel appreciated, it’s not really an end of year treat if they have to pay for it themselves.

That said, if I really liked my co-workers, I’d probably pay for a meal and a drink, or I’d pay for a drink or two (I don’t drink alcohol anyway) and hang out. I probably wouldn’t pay more than that.
